My 1 year experience as a student at IIIT Pune

There are already 2 posts giving you enough clarity about this college one mentioned the dark side and the other mentioned its pros or whatever.

I am here to just share my opinion (if anyone gives a fuck) about this college , my experience and insights. To be very honest , the day that i got allotted this college I was totally excited as I was going out of state for the first time to study or stay away from home (it is for sure an experience, to all the upcoming college students , i totally recommend you to stay at a college that is far from home , you will learn lot of things). But this excitement vanished as soon as I got to the college 😭. After viewing it's location and amenities/facilities , Yes it is between mountains and the atmosphere is amazing most of the days , but also not forgetting that the nearest village(Talegaon) is 7km away from college itself , due to which if you want to go for purchasing stuff or anything you will have to travel and get out of your comfort zone. And Pune is like 30km away so for outing in Pune you have to travel for minimum 2 hours 🥀. And we have survived on mere tapri that is just outside the college premises. One good news is that 6-7 shops are going to be opened from August(when the new batch arrives) which are under college premises and includes shops like haircut saloon ,fast food , kirana shop , etc. so the new students are not going to struggle as much as we did 🥲.

Also about internet speed , yes the Ethernet port is absolutely phenomenal for most of the days currently. And wifi range is pretty shitty in the hostel but in the academic block it is good (not best). I have heard that they are working on it but not for sure.

There are washing machines which they installed recently and work decently, also the lifts are working .

Yes, there are just 3 hostels (1 girls hostel and 2 boys hostels) they are okay-ish. Like not something you would expect after paying 17Lakhs , tbh I was very disappointed but adjusted later on as my roomies are amazing, 4 bunk beds and common washroom , water comes 24/7 with some exceptions sometimes , same goes for electricity. (You guys are lucky that you won't have to play Russian roulette poop edition that we had to play/suffer 😭🙏🏻 , hoped that someone did not absolutely blast the toilet and left without flushing because there was water scarcity).

Faculties are Good (imo) , like it is not that the faculties are totally useless , irrelevant to their domains and fields and just teach shit. Rather unlike many colleges we have pretty strong faculties from diverse domains and have good experiences. If you go ask them a genuine doubt they will absolutely help. Yes they can be sometimes a pain in ass for attendance 😮‍💨 (75% mandatory).

As most of you have already heard there is a clear shortage of accommodation for students and they are making students of 3rd and 4th year students get an offcampus accommodation. This is because of the increased seats even though we clearly do not have any other place for students.

One of the SERIOUS problems here is they are not building new infra , like there is no sports infra , not building a new hostel or not even flattening the cricket ground. These lazy ass management have not built any physical infra in the past year except these 6 buildings. (except 6/7 🤷🏻‍♂️ shops that they built in past 6 months). We have 100acres of total land area and currently only 33% is in use.

Other than this , computer labs are my favourite, they have good capacity and environment.

For CSE students the placements are decent to good , but for ECE students there is little to no opportunity, they do not have equipment and facilities to facilitate the needs of core ece student research and development.

There is little to none in the case of ragging, seniors might ask you for intro😈 but nothing more serious or harmful or humiliating.

The Truth About IIIT Pune

The Truth about IIIT Pune (Nanoli Campus):
I’m a current student, and while some are review-bombing over temporary administrative shifts (hostel relocation), here is the actual on-ground reality for those who are serious about Engineering.

  1. The Infrastructure (Myth vs. Fact):
CSE Labs: The labs are top-tier. We have brand new machines and equipment that are high-spec and can handle pretty much any heavy workload.

WiFi: It was a struggle initially, but it’s solved. We currently have 1000 Mbps LAN and 100+ Mbps WiFi. For a coder, this is literal heaven.

Lifts: Previous issues have been fully resolved; the lifts are functional and smooth now, making campus life much easier.

The Vibe: Yes, we are in the mountains. Yes, it’s foggy and scenic. If you want city chaos, go elsewhere. If you want a high-tech retreat with a balcony view of the mountains while you grind DSA, this is it. (And yes, we share the ecosystem with leopards—it's basically a mountain campus).

Hostels: Rooms are 4-sharing but big enough for everyone to stay comfortably, with balconies. Hot water is consistent (2-3 hours morning and evening). Filters and washrooms are cleaned regularly.

  1. The Food (The Best Kept Secret):
Don’t listen to the haters. According to mess standards, we are eating incredibly well. Daily edible meals, and the breakfast/sweets are honestly top-tier. It's much better than what you'll find at most older legacy institutes. The only con is that Non-veg is not available.

Late Night/Variety: If you need a break from the mess, Swiggy and Zomato deliver until 10:00 PM, and Instamart comes right to the hostel until 2:00 AM. We also have 3-4 shops and a chai tapri serving everything from chicken rolls and burgers to pizzas.

City Access: The college provides a free daily bus service to the main Talegaon area, so you’re never truly cut off.

  1. Placements, Seniors & Tech Culture (The Real Flex):
This is why you actually come here. Even with the ongoing global tech slump, our placements aren't just surviving—they are significantly improving. Average packages steadily climbing and proving the sheer strength of the IIIT tag in Pune's IT hub.
Beyond the numbers, the community is amazing. The seniors are incredibly nice and always ready to guide you, whether it's for coding or club activities. The teachers are also very friendly, approachable, and actually understand the modern tech landscape.

  2. The Honest Cons:
Management is a work in progress. Communication can be slow, and construction for sports grounds/shops is still ongoing (though in-campus shops are opening next sem and PMPML buses have started). Third-year hostel relocation is a point of friction, but it's the growing pains of a rapidly expanding elite institute.

Verdict:
If you want a ready-made playground and a 150-year-old building, go to a legacy state college. If you want to be part of the few batches that build a institute, has great internet and enjoys a peaceful mountain balcony—Welcome to IIIT Pune.

Reality of IIIT Pune

I’m writing this as a current student to give a realistic picture of IIIT Pune for anyone considering joining. This is not a hate post—just a reality check so you know what you’re signing up for.

First, let’s clear a common misconception: IIIT Pune is not actually in Pune city. It’s located in Talegaon, which is quite far. It takes around an hour by local train to reach Pune, and there’s basically nothing within a 4–5 km radius of the campus.

The college was allotted 100 acres of land, but only about 33 acres (Phase 1) are developed so far. This includes:

2 boys’ hostels and 1 girls’ hostel

1 academic block

Director’s residence and some faculty housing

That’s it.

Construction has been stalled for almost a year, and Phase 2 hasn’t even started (even after new batches like 2029 have been admitted).

Now coming to the actual issues:

No proper sports infrastructure – There’s no proper ground to play on.

No canteen or shops – Apart from the mess, there’s nothing on campus.

Mess situation – It’s pure veg, and while the menu changes and food is okay-ish, hygiene is a serious concern. Finding insects or flies in food is unfortunately not rare.

No proper boundary wall – We had a temporary one, but parts of it were recently removed (reportedly due to payment issues with the contractor).

Wildlife issues – Leopards have entered the campus area 2–3 times. Yes, seriously.

The administration’s lack of involvement is another big problem. A good example is our annual fest “Iconclave”, which happened after 2 years. The college wasn’t willing to fund it properly but still expected it to happen. It was only because of insane student effort and management that the event was successful.

Recently, we also received a notice that hostels for 3rd and 4th year students will be allotted based on CGPA, which many of us find unfair since this policy was never mentioned during admissions.

On top of that, there is already a hostel shortage, but the college continues to increase student intake every year without expanding infrastructure.

This post is partly a rant, but mostly meant to inform future students. If you’re planning to join, just be aware of these realities and decide accordingly.

If you’re from IIIT Pune and think I’ve missed something, feel free to add in the comments.

URGENT! Must check this post regarding HOSTEL ALLOTMENT.

It has been over a year since the initiation of our permanent campus, yet the progress on promised infrastructure—remains stalled.

We are now facing a sudden mandate to relocate outside the campus. This decision, communicated during the high-pressure period of end-semester examinations, raises critical questions regarding the administration's long-term planning and the prioritization of student welfare.

Why This Matters

As students of an Institute of National Importance , we deserve transparency and accountability regarding our living conditions and academic environment.

  • Safety Concerns: Moving students to remote areas like Talegaon without adequate security infrastructure creates unnecessary risks.
  • Capacity Issues: The lack of planning for third and fourth-year students suggests a systemic failure in projecting growth and resource management.
  • Broken Commitments: We were admitted under specific promises regarding campus facilities that have yet to materialize.

Precedent for Collective Action

Other institutes, such as IIIT Sri City and IIIT Nagpur , have successfully demanded accountability by holding administrations to their promised timelines and protesting for essential facilities. We must follow this lead.

Call to Action

We are not asking for favors; we are exercising our right to know the status of the facilities we were promised. We urge all students and parents to:

  1. Demand Transparency: Ask the administration for a detailed, time-bound roadmap for hostel and facility construction.
  2. Unite: Silence only enables the current state of neglect. If we do not address this now, the incoming batches will face the same instability.
  3. Amplify: Share this message with fellow students, parent groups, and on social platforms such as whatsapp to ensure our voices are heard by the authorities.

The administration operates for the students, not the other way around. It is time for us to stand together and demand the quality of life and education we were promised.

According to previous year data. I am getting ece here or may get cse in csab. Pune is also near to my hometown and also many of my relatives live in pune so I am considering it. How is the workload in ece department like it is chill or so much academic heavy. I will be targetting IT Jobs.

Also there is no campus tour video on youtube (detailed). If anyone finds please paste the link!!
