Trying to help my BF who got scammed in Geneva - “IRISH TOURIST”
Edit: My boyfriend works in Geneva and got approached by a man claiming to be a distressed British tourist (introduced himself as British, said he was Northern Irish from Belfast) who said he'd been robbed and had nothing left. The guy gave my boyfriend his number and sent him a picture of his passport (likely fake) BUT my boyfriend says the picture of him in the passport is 100% him (attached the picture of him below) and convinced him to withdraw about 1,100 in cash, saying he was transferring the money back to him and that it would take time because it was an international transfer. He sent my boyfriend screenshots of the transfer which was definitely fabricated and my naive boyfriend believed it because he’s new to Geneva and all the “high-trust” comments have made him put his guard down as he said the scammer was crying and was well-dressed and well-spoken. (We are from London so I’m not sure how he wasn’t wary at all, but I want to mitigate the situation first then scold him).
My boyfriend thought he saw proof of the transfer, but no money has actually arrived.
The man gave him a phone number and has a WhatsApp profile. We've since found that the profile picture he's using appears to be taken from somewhere else online under a different name, which makes it even more suspicious. Has anyone seen or experienced something similar in Geneva or elsewhere? Any advice on whether there's any chance of recovering the money or finding this dude effectively?
Hopefully sharing his face prevents others from interacting with him. I was not with my boyfriend at this moment in time, I'm not as kind or forgiving as he is and yes he was naive.
[We have reported it to the police today already, wondering if there's anything else we could do considering I'm based in the UK as is this scammer (has a UK phone number) We are both young undergrads so the money means a lot it was saved up]
