Ask me anything

I used DAT Bootcamp! I was pleasantly surprised by my science scores, especially bio which I didn't feel super great on. If you have any questions or need some tips let me know!

Dat 4/16

This was my first time taking and I am so happy and surprised with the score! I have a lower GPA (3.61 core and 3.3 science) and was a student athlete at an SEC school. Will these stats help my chances and offset my lower GPA?

Bio Advice

For people who did well in Bio, what helped you the most with improving your score? Was it mostly reviewing mistakes from practice tests and repeatedly going over Bio Bits/flashcards, study notes, and cheat sheets? I recently started studying with booster and trying to figure out what actually helps the most with remembering everything long term.

Application Advice Please!

Can anybody with similar scores weigh in? How did you fare in past applications cycles?

3.3 sGPA, 3.7 cumulative, collegiate athlete (eleven-time All American), lots of campus involvement, 100+ pre-medical shadowing hours, 200+ pre-dental shadowing hours, 300+ volunteering hours, founder of a club and a registered dental assistant.

I know that I should probably retake the DAT, but I want to apply this cycle and I'm worried that if I rush into another one (shooting for July area so that I can receive my scores back in August) that I'll risk scoring lower. I know that with my stats I have a better chance applying earlier in the cycle. I'm just bummed and burnt out. I was scoring about those ranges on DAT Bootcamp in every subject but RC. I was scoring 470-490 on practice exams, but got a 400 on test day. Walking out, RC felt like the only subject I truly did well on and I completely tanked.

Am I the problem?

I just retook the DAT and I feel like I'm not doing something right. I had initially got a 20 on the DAT last year, but retook it again to try and get a higher score since I had a low OChem score. I was getting a consistent 24 on the full practice exams on DAT Booster, but I just took the test and I feel like I completely messed up. I felt as though there were many low-yield questions that I've never seen before and was much harder than the tests I had taken on Booster. From just the feel of it, I feel like I got a 19-21. Am I getting unlucky on the exam or is there something I need to change? I'm really lost for what to do and I feel like I couldn't have prepared more for the DAT than I could've before this.

29 days out...starting to feel hopeless. Any advice would be great!

I've gone through all of the bootcamp videos, and I go over my full lengths in depth the day after. I'm starting to feel stupid because my scores have remained consistently garbage. My DAT is in 29 days, so I wanted to ask if anyone who went through a similar struggle had any advice. Should I reschedule, or will this month be enough? I'm on summer break now, so I do have the time to grind 8 hours a day if that's what is necessary. Thank you for your help!

April DAT

So, I’m really bummed about my score. I was scoring 21+ on general chemistry on boot camp. But, when the real thing came I barely got a 17 . Gen chem was so different and im not sure what to use to prepare now.

I’m now planning for a retake, but not sure how to prepare myself.

Anyone else that took theirs in April in the same predicament? Maybe we can study together

ochem separatory funnel/extraction trouble

I am having trouble understanding when something resides in the aqueous vs organic layer based on what is being added, and whether that layer is on the top or bottom

does anyone have any tips on how they learned/understood this concept? thanks!

edit: also questions that are like "what do you add to separate X and Y?"

Reckless Operation Conviction- please help

To be clear, I recognize I made a mistake, and I need help urgently. Criticizing my mistake won't help right now. I am currently thinking of dropping pre-dent as a whole right before the application cycle because of advice I have received from others. Earlier this year, I was arrested for an OVI/DUI charge, and it was ultimately reduced to reckless operation of the 4th degree. Ever since then, I have been put in such a dark place mentally, as my loved ones don't look at me the same, and drinking was never really my thing, which is what caught them so off guard. Sorry for the run-on sentences, as I am just frantically typing and hoping I can get some feedback on what to do properly. I did all of the court requirements and paid for all of the attorney fees out of my pocket, and now I am sad to think that, even after all of this, my family does not let go of my mistake. All I want is for me to be happy with myself and restore confidence in myself that my career is not truly over. For reference, my stats are 3.93 GPA, 3.89 science GPA. I am taking the DAT the last week of May, and my practice test AA on Booster is 510. Obviously, the practice test AA does not mean anything, but it gives me some confidence that I have the ability to do well on this exam. I have around 750 hours of working at the Dental School as a sterilization tech (hopefully counting as dental experience), which is the same university as my undergrad. I have around 450 hours volunteering (not dental related), 130 hours of shadowing (a couple of general + perio). I am also a lead tutor at our undergrads' gen chem department, as this position is analogous to a TA, except I do both gen chem 1 and 2, and this has been going on for 4 semesters. I am on exec for 2 clubs -nothing big, and there are a couple of random things that I may be forgetting. With all of this info, I talked to an advisor, and they told me to either take a couple of gap years or completely pivot from dentistry. I was truly heartbroken when I heard that, and I feel like there is nothing more satisfying to me than dentistry. I love working with people and restoring their confidence in their smile, and the idea of patients trusting my work makes me know that this career is truly for me. With all of that in mind and knowing that the incident was this year, what do you guys truly think I should do? Please be as honest as you can and help a brother out. I truly need it at this time.

Biology section

I have started studying for the DAT about 10 days ago and plan on taking it in late august but Im starting to feel like the videos are wasting alot of time for biology because i keep pausing to take notes and instead of them taking 1 hour to 1.5 hours its taking me 4 to 5 hours to finish them after taking notes. Any tips I really feel like im benefitting more from the anki decks and bio bits. Do you guys think its worth taking notes or should i just watch the videos and then do anki and the bio bits. I would appreciate any tips even if its for anything other than bio.

Advice? I’m gonna retake but I really don’t want to…

2nd attempt, chem went up a lot and PAT did too but my orgo stayed the same and so did bio. My reading went from 24 to 18😔 my last attempt was 410/19 and it stayed the same very unfortunately. I have a 3.47 and my shadowing is 300 hrs my volunteer is 150. Any thoughts? Is there a few schools I can apply early to with these then apply to others in August afte retaking?
