Loving the Mustang

Bought the car over the weekend. Bought in Phoenix and live in Vegas… so it got a true 280 mile test right off the rip. Side note, ineedappi.com was a great resource to get a car inspection before I drove 5 hrs to buy the car.

Lots to love with the car. And, already a list of things I need to change, update, and address. I’ve had mixed reviews from friends and family on the yellow. Some hate it, some love it.

Still trying to figure out what I do with my hands when I get the thumbs up. Do I nod? Thumbs up back?

This is a 1969 Mustang with the 302… but Stoker 347. Someone put a sunroof on it, which was an interesting choice but I’m not mad about it since it’s hot AF with no AC. Custom wood cover in the trunk is pretty sweet.

I’m still getting used to driving it. Happy with the purchase.

Finally joined the club

After years of saving and searching, I finally found my 1966 289 coupe. She's not perfect but looks good, runs great, and I love it.

Mechanic took out thermostat to stop over heating?

My 66 289 has been chronically overheating for 10 years. I’m talking like, steam, boiling over, about to explode type of overheating. Between new radiators, lines, etc. it always flared up. After not driving it for 3 years I took it in for various work and they realized the radiator had a leak. They replaced it and in the process took out the thermostat. He said I don’t need one in socal… everyone online says I need one. Ever since the car has not overheated once or gotten close to. I check under the hood after driving it and it all looks, sounds, and smells fine. Is this a mistake? What is the downside of removing it?

‘68 Costco Coupe

Saw this cool mustang coupe at Costco this afternoon. Is this a C/S with the sequential turn signals? The owner appeared a few minutes later & confirmed it was a 68. Her husband “restored it” for her. Is that a bench seat? I’ve never seen a bench seat on a mustang.

New shoes

Took the Mustang to Cars and Coffee this morning and snapped a few pics. It’s the first time I’ve driven it since redoing the front suspension and installing new wheels and tires (a process which spanned a few months with life and kids delaying things).

Suspension: Open Tracker stage 2 (with Shelby/arning drop)

Wheels: AR Torq Thrust II, 17x8, 8mm offset

Tires: 245/45R17 Firestone Firehawk Indy 500v2

Overall, I’m super happy how it turned out. The old suspension was in rough shape and the car sat high in the front. The new springs and Shelby drop dropped it about an inch, and it‘s sitting just about perfect. The thing now though is that I feel like I need to upgrade/refresh my steering. It’s a power steering car, and everything is just kind of vague.

As for the wheels and tires, I had 15“ Torq Thrusts on it, but the tires were ancient (20+ years old). The 15” options (with a tall enough sidewall) are severely lacking. Also I work for a tire company. We don’t carry anything in an appropriate size, and I wasn't too keen on paying full price for a competitor’s tire. So, I got larger wheels to open up my options. I did paint the spokes myself and am pretty happy how they turned out. I was a little worried about upsizing so much, both due to potential rubbing and just the look. But no problems yet with the former, and turns out I love the look.

Next immediate step is to get a proper alignment.

Other nearish-term projects:

- Replace the rear leafs and shocks

- Figure out what I want to do about steering

- New steering wheel

Next big project (of undetermined timeline) will be to swap the C4 out for some variety of Tremec 5-speed.

As a side note, I’ve had this car for like 16 years and most of that time it’s sat parked. I had convinced myself last year that I should sell it and buy something I’d drive more. In the process of fixing a few nagging issues to get it ready to sell, I kind of fell in love with it again though. I’ve gotten more in the habit of tinkering here and there when I have time and have actually been enjoying it. Still not sure I’ll keep it forever, but it’s become a fun hobby rather than just a dust-collecting garage ornament.

First time moving under its own power in a year!

I know not everyone will love the engine but after blowing up my 408w I already had this sitting in the garage. Of course the swap was a lot more work than I ever expected. Said every car guy ever. 😂

Seat cover help!

We’re fixing up our 1965 mustang and are looking for seat covers. Most likely it’ll need to be custom. We’d like these black/white seats with the mustang emblem and maybe blue stitching (we’re redoing the paint after the interior) but we don’t know we’re to look, any recommendations?

Deep blue, clean lines, and that J-code presence

Clean classic lines, sharp wheels, chrome touches, and that old-school attitude that never really gets old.
