Hi,
we’re four guys, and we’ve put together Westminster’s restaurant scene in an app called Vota. The concept is simple: you see two places side by side (for example Famille vs. Kachina Southwestern Grill), you choose the place you’d rather go to, and the ranking updates instantly. The more people vote, the more accurate the list gets over time. There are still a few duplicates here and there, but I’m continuously cleaning up the data.

Here’s the iPhone version, with categories that actually fit Westminster’s food scene:
https://apps.apple.com/app/vota-restaurant-ratings/id6744969212

And here’s the Android version (finally live):
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.vota.app

P.S. I’m not from Westminster (I live in Gothenburg). I’m not collecting data, not selling anything, and the app does not use AI-generated content. I’m posting in a few different subreddits because we now support more regions, and I genuinely want honest feedback from people who actually know the area.

Hi! I’m moving to the area as soon as I can find a place. I read some posts about what areas to avoid and kept seeing West Side. Is this pin too much “in” the west side? I drove by the outside and it felt fine in that particular little area. And I like being close to the river and park area. Looking for any thoughts on if I’ll be ok with a 1 year lease in this area with just myself (female) and dog. Or if I should keep looking. Thanks!

You guys are the biggest pansies ive ever seen in my life. Its obvious you've never lived anywhere outside of your home state..

You say the west side is "dangerous" have you all ever been to a larger city like Baltimore, NY, Chicago, Philly, Oakland, Compton..

Those are REAL ghettos. Cities that have actual bullet proof glass on the doors of every gas station. Places where police are allowed to carry riot shields and tear gas. The west side is the softest place I've ever stepped foot in. I'd argue that even places like Greenville South Carolina are worse.

If you think that the west side of Charleston west Virginia is dangerous then you need to leave your home state and get out more.

The West Side Is a literal kiddy pool compared to the ocean.

When you step foot into the actual ocean then you'd laugh.

Places to go

Hi! I’m bringing my BFF to Charleston for a night of fun next weekend (5/16) for her birthday. I used to live in Charleston and there was a bar called Griff’s where you could sit out on the deck and enjoy drinks and food. I see that this place has closed now, but I was wondering if there were any similar places or where the locals would recommend for dinner/drinks and a relaxed atmosphere?

We were also hoping to possibly go to a drag show or find some other fun, so any suggestions welcome! thanks!

2026 West Virginia elections — US Senate + 2 House races

A few years ago I tried to research my own congressional candidates and the info was a mess -- scattered across a dozen sites, half of them outdated. So I built what I wished existed, and the 2026 West Virginia pages are now live: WV's US Senate race and 2 US House elections:

WV US Senate: https://www.localcandidates.org/elections/2026-us-senate-wv
WV US House (D1): https://www.localcandidates.org/elections/2026-us-house-of-representatives-wv-1
WV US House (D2): https://www.localcandidates.org/elections/2026-us-house-of-representatives-wv-2

You can compare candidates, their positions, fundraising, and backgrounds without bouncing between a dozen tabs. Free, non-partisan, no ads, no signup.

Built and maintained solo. Would genuinely love feedback -- what's missing, what's confusing, what would make it more useful. Happy to take questions or hear about bugs in the comments.

Eagle view

Everyone was super helpful on a post of mine the other day with places to live. I toured a few and out of what’s available (so many of the good ones you all recommended don’t have any available units currently) I think I’m going to move forward with Eagle View.

But quick question. Because this is at the top of what I was hoping to spend.. no utilities are included.. can someone give me a rough estimate of what you spend on utilities a month there? For just 1 person.

Just want to make sure I’m not biting off more than I can chew. Thank you!

Amtrak parking

I'm taking the Cardinal to Chicago and points west in July. I'll be gone for a week. Since I live in Parkersburg, I am planning to drive down. Is there long term parking at the Amtrak station? If there is, does anyone know the cost? I'll be departing after dark, and my return train gets me back to Charleston at 8:30 am. If there is no long term parking at the station, what are my best (affordable and safest) options?

Summer camp

Hi everyone,
My toddler goes to mountaineer Montessori toddler program. They are having campessori. This is my first kid so I don’t have any prior experience with summer camps. Is Campessori worth it? Has any one sent there kids before?
Thanks

Hello all, driving to Virginia tomorrow but am spending the night in Charleston. I’m looking for a killer Diner to get breakfast in or on the way out of Charleston. Would love somewhere with an outstanding omelette, or even just a local staple!

Thanks!

My garden isn't too happy, but boy do I love it. Really hoping this is telling of the type of summer we will have. I am sick of having two months of 90Fs weather.

I am considering getting serious about therapy again. I am going through some very positive life events as of recent, and I can tell my unresolved mental health issues are holding me back from progressing further. I have also begun experiencing new symptoms that are becoming a problem.

I have had therapy in the past as a child and teenager. I'm now an adult, living in a new city, and I am ready to establish a relationship with a therapist and psychiatrist. However, many are horrible at their jobs; could anyone recommend a renowned, good one in this area?

Big White House everyone knows

Can someone please tell me the name or address of that big White House that everyone knows what I’m talking about the one up on a hill? Is it occupied by a family, is it a historical site, is there history behind it? I’m so intrigued and want to know more
