SÉ AMABLE de Charles Bukowski
Siempre nos piden
que entendamos el punto de vista
de los otros
sin importar si es
anticuado
necio
asqueroso.
A uno le piden
que entienda
amablemente
todos los errores de los otros
sus vidas desperdiciadas
sobre todo si son
de edad avanzada.
Pero su edad es lo único
en lo que nos fijamos.
Han envejecido
mal
porque han
vivido
sin enfoque,
se han negado
a ver.
¿Que no es culpa suya?
¿culpa de quién?
¿mía?
se me pide que oculte
mi opinión
ante ellos
por miedo a su
miedo.
La edad no es un crimen
pero la vergüenza
de una vida
deliberadamente
desperdiciada
entre tantas
vidas
deliberadamente
desperdiciadas
sí lo es.
I want to write a term paper about the philosophy of Charles Bukowski, compared to Daoism. Feel free to drop some recommendations!
Basically what the title says. I still have to write one term paper required for my masters degree in philosophy. Yesterday I ordered two other books from Charles Bukowski (On Drinking and On Cats), and suddenly the idea to write about him just catched me one hour ago. The idea is to point out similarities (and of course differences) between daoistic philosophy and Bukowskis philosophy of life.
Daoism is a lot about the use of the useless (if someone here read Zhuangzi), the natural flow of life, not forcing stuff to happen - be oneself, listening to the inner voice. Also, not thinking too much about what other people might think, not trying to impress them. Even success is irrelevant, all you need is balance. I think there is a lot of potential in pointing out what Daoism and Bukowski have in common, or rather, how Bukowskis view can be seen as an interpretation of daoistic principles.
If you know any books of him which would fit well into this idea, I'd be thankful if you can recommend them! So far I've read Ham On Rye, Post Office, Women and some short stories and poems.
Have a great day, y'all!
“The People Look Like Flowers at Last” by Charles Bukowski
The Last Days of the Suicide Kid
I found this poem mixes perfectly with Sylvain Chauveau: Nuage III so decided to make a tribute video out of it.
Ham on Rye by Charles Bukowski
Charles Bukowski wrote about his childhood being poor, abused by his father, badly bullied for his acne, and completely isolated growing up.
A matter of magic ✨
From a 1960s letter by Charles Bukowski, later published in Living on Luck: Selected Letters. The quote is the opening line of the letter.
Bukowski Carving
A carving of Bukowski I did a while back. Thought this group might appreciate it. :)
Best and worst Bukowski in your opinion?
Best - Factotum or On Writing (his letters are gold)
Worst - Women, by far. I actually wish I never read it because I found it insufferable and I otherwise love Bukowski.
