2021 X7 xDrive40i Air Strut Replacement

Hi all! I was quoted $3600 for rear left air strut replacement. The part itself is $2400 from the dealer. Unfortunately, my warranty explicitly says that it will not cover the strut. I bought it used and paid for an extended warranty. After shopping around, this is the best quote I got (from Eurotech). I had foolishly thought that once I got this “top tear” warranty, I was not going to have a lot that it wont cover. Unfortunately for me, the first issue I have is not covered. Now is this something I can do on my own? Can I replace the air strut by myself? What are my options? Is there a good service reference book or video I can use?

Edit: if the air strut is leaking, is it true that I will soon have a burnt out air compressor if I don’t immediately fix it?

Window tint

Need advice on window tint for my new (to me) X7! The back is tinted very well, but front has nothing. I am getting quotes for ceramic tint. With the sky lounge feature, are you still able to tint it normally? Is there anything else I should be asking or should I be having it done at a dealer or does it matter?

ETA One other thing to add - I am EXTREMELY light sensitive. So I’m wanting to get it as dark as I can without risking not being able to see super well. I can get a physician letter even. But I have zero concept of what these percentages are and what they would look like. I’m assuming the lower the less light coming through? What is the normal allowed amounts legally? Can you get a slight tint on the whole windshield or just the top part? What percentage is the stock one from BMW?

Weird sound

Twice today, shortly after putting my 2023 in park, I hear a fairly loud release of pressure coming from the front end. I called the service center and the guy said maybe it has to do with the air suspension, but you shouldn’t ever hear a loud, noticeable sound like I did. He said I should bring it in to have it looked at, because he’s never come across something like that.

I’m going to bring it in tomorrow but, in the meantime, anyone had that issue? Know what I’m looking at? It’s just BARELY out of warranty 🫣

2021 X7 M50i rides noticeably harsher than my 2025 X7 40i on the same 22” run-flats — normal or something worn?

I own two X7s:

- 2021 X7 M50i

- 2025 X7 xDrive40i

They are on the same 22” wheels and run-flat tire setup.

The 2025 rides super smooth, but the 2021 feels noticeably sharper over potholes and speed bumps. Not crazy bad, but definitely harsher and less compliant.

Important details:

- no suspension warning

- no sagging

- no obvious ride height issue

- transfer case is already being handled separately by dealer

- same wheels/tires, so this is not just a wheel size difference

My question is: has anyone experienced this on a 2021–2022 X7 M50i?

Did it turn out to be:

- normal M50i tuning

- worn struts/dampers

- air suspension aging

- control arm / thrust arm bushings

- mounts / bump stops

- something else

If you had this exact “sharp over impacts” feeling, what was the actual fix?

I have warranty and good dealership relationship, so I want to point them in the right direction before they just tell me “that’s normal.”

2026 X7 M60i oil change question: if I do early 5k oil changes, does resetting CBS push my covered service farther out?

Looking for some guidance on how this works on a 2026 BMW X7 M60i.

My car is about 6 months old and currently has 9,015 miles.
I have BMW Ultimate Care+ Full (3 years / 36,000 miles).

Right now, CBS says engine oil due in 2,032 miles or by 9/29/2026, so the next official oil service looks to be around 11,047 miles.

What I’m trying to understand is how this works if I want to be more conservative and do 5k-ish oil changes.

My concern:

If I do a customer-pay oil change early now, will the dealer or indie shop reset the CBS oil service counter?

Because if they reset it, then the car pushes the next official oil service farther out.
Then when I hit my next personal 5k interval, that oil change would again be out of pocket, which basically means I’d keep “chasing” the BMW-covered oil service farther away.

So my questions are:

  1. If I do an early customer-pay oil change, does CBS always get reset?
  2. Can a BMW dealer or indie do an oil + filter change without resetting the CBS oil item?
  3. If I want extra 5k oil changes but also want to preserve the included BMW-covered oil service, what’s the best way to handle it?

Also curious about the driveline side:

  1. On the X7 M60i, does BMW treat the transfer case and front diff fluid as lifetime / sealed-for-life, or are people changing those preventively anyway?
  2. If you’re maintaining one of these more conservatively than BMW’s schedule, what mileage are you doing for:
    • engine oil
    • transfer case
    • diff(s)

Would appreciate insight from anyone who’s dealt with this at a dealer or indy, especially on whether early paid oil changes mess with the CBS schedule.

Anybody in San Antonio want some BMW all weather mats? I've got 2 sets of carpet and all weather never used that I will never need.
