Is it weird using "awak" as a 24M with another man in their 20s

Hari tu saya ada berinteraksi dengan lelaki (stranger) yang boleh kata umur lebih kurang. Kalau guna kau rasanya ok je tapi sebab saya ni macam reserved sikit, dengan stranger, memang saya tak guna kau. Selalunya awak, kak, mak cik, encik, etc.

I felt bored and tried translating Doki Doki Literature Club, the infamous visual novel, into Malay, though only the prologue for now. Feel free to share your thoughts and provide feedback in the comment section!

One important reminder: I don't plan to complete the full translation for the entire game anytime soon, because I merely view this as an alternative method to improve my Malay writing skills.

In order to determine the writing style in the translation, I took a look at several Malay young adult fiction novels, and decided that the narration should be mostly in the standard formal language with occassional colloquial elements where necessary, and the dialogues in informal Malay that strives to feel as natural as possible.

One major challenge while working on the translation was the pronouns used by each character. I wanted them to reflect their personalities and relationships with other characters, but it wasn't an easy task.

First of all, I let Sayori and Natsuki use "aku" and "kau" since they are more straightforward with their speech. As for Yuri, I made her use "saya" and "awak" to match her refined, timid demeanour.

But I had a hard time trying to decide on how Monika, the club president, speaks. At first, I thought she'd use "aku" and "kamu", since the latter feels more polite than "kau". And yet, after doing some online research it appeared to me that people these days rarely use "kamu" to refer to their peers, and that it's more often used by someone in a superior position to address those who are below them in social hierarchy, like a teacher calling their students or a manager calling their employees.

In the end, I went with a more flexible option: Monika would use "aku" and "kau" when conversing with the other girls, and "saya" and "awak" with the player. I'm currently considering letting her switch to "aku" and "kau" later in the game as she gets closer to the MC. Do you think this a reasonable choice? I'd appreciate your ideas on this.

Regarding the game's UI, I'm thinking of leaving most technical terms untranslated since their Malay equivalents are usually not well-established and would probably sound extremely awkward and confusing to players. This approach may upset certain linguistic purists in this sub, if there is any, but it is a choice I made after hard consideration to sacrifice purism for naturalness and accessibility. I remember watching a Malay gamer play the Upin & Ipin game and remark "Takkan benda ni pun nak translate, macam mana nak paham ni" when he adjusted the language settings to Malay and saw the UI filled with unfamiliar terminology. Nevertheless, there are some words whose Malay translations I feel are popular and widespread enough to be included naturally in the game, like "muat turun."

Introducing GigHala: A Sarawakian-Founded Freelance Platform Built for Malaysia

Hi Everyone!

We often talk about the talent coming out of Borneo, and today I want to highlight a local project that’s tackling the "Wild West" of the gig economy. One of our own, u/hamkas, has launched GigHala, a freelance marketplace specifically designed for the Malaysian landscape.

While global platforms like Upwork and Fiverr are great, they often leave Malaysian freelancers dealing with high forex fees, zero social protection, and payment disputes that are hard to resolve from 10,000 miles away.

Why GigHala is different:

  • SOCSO (PERKESO) Integration: Finally, a platform that actually addresses the social safety net. They’ve integrated SOCSO protection to ensure gig workers have some security.
  • Syariah-Principled & Ethical: It uses PayHalal for secure, transparent transactions and ensures that the work listed stays within ethical/halal boundaries.
  • Built for Local Wallets: No more waiting weeks for USD conversions. It supports direct payouts to Malaysian banks and Touch 'n Go eWallet.
  • Escrow Protection: Your payment is held securely and only released when the work is done, protecting both the freelancer and the client.

Why we should support it:

As members of r/BorneoTech, we know how hard it is to build tech in our region. GigHala isn't just "another website"; it’s an attempt to professionalize the local freelance economy and keep our digital talent within a protected ecosystem.

Whether you are a developer, designer, writer, or a business owner looking for local talent, let’s show some support for a Sarawakian led initiative.

Check it out and sign up here: gighala

Let’s help grow our own! Support local, hire local. 🛡️💻

Disclaimer: I’m sharing this because I believe in highlighting Sarawakian founders and local tech solutions. Let’s discuss in the comments what features would you like to see to make this even better for Borneo-based freelancers?

Non Malay speaker tried to write and sing a nasheed in Malay - how bad is my pronunciation? 😅

Assalamualaikum everyone ,

I am a nasheed artist and I wanted to create something special for my Muslim brothers and sisters in Malaysia, Indonesia and Brunei.

I wrote my lyrics in English first, then translated them to Malay using Google Translate. I searched for rhyming words at end of each verse and used Google to learn the pronunciation.

I know it is far from perfect, that is why I am here. I would truly appreciate any native Malay speakers to watch this short clip and help me correct my pronunciation and lyrics .

Your help means everything to me ❤️

Does anyone know this website exists? As far as my finding, it is miles ahead of prpm in terms of entries. Excluding all the tools that prpm provides this is objectively just a better dictionary. DBP on their socials don't seem to promote it though. I wonder why..?

Korang tahu tak akan kewujudan laman web ni? Dari hasil uji cuba aku ia berfungsi jauh lebih baik dari prpm, lebih2 lagi dari segi entri. Kalau kita abaikan semua alat yang disediakan oleh prpm kamus yang satu ni jauh lebih berguna sebagai kamus digital. Cuma tulah tak nampak pula admin sosial media mereka promosikan benda ni. Rasa2nya kenapa eh?

Hi semua!

I have two half-Malaysian kids, I read a lot to them in English and my native language, however, I would like for them to also read books in their dad's native language. :) besides, I hope it'll help me to improve my own bahasa melayu as well!

Can anyone recommend me children books in bahasa Melayu? Can be both islamic based or non-islamic based, as long as the moral of story is positive. Terima kasih!

Edit: they're 3.5 and 1.5 yo
