We need to talk calmly about the Gold rank in this game.

I don't know if Gold players can chime in, but I'd like to talk about the experience of being in this percentile.

It's, quite honestly, a huge gap.

You can have a game where someone forgets to build villagers and reaches Age II at 7 minutes completely naked.

And the next game, you have someone who knows all the counter units, micro-speaks perfectly, and has 160+ APM.

The skill gap is absolutely insane at this rank, and I'm sure that in higher ranks, the skill gap narrows.

So yes, of course, there's smurfing, but that can't explain everything.

What do you think?

AI vs. AI tournament - Swiss Hybrid-Elimination Tournament

Okay, let's do this tournament - each game I will pick Mongols, and pack up into the corner to not interfere.

I will report a Hardest vs. Hardest AI battle, and update the tournament brackets with the outcome.

At the end of the tournament, I will use the win-loss matrix to calculate the Maximum Likelihood statistical estimator of relative ELO scores, using the parametric statistical model given by the Logistic ELO model.

Tournament Rules - Swiss Hybrid Elimination Tournament (SHET)
- There are n=3 tables, labelled from "top" to "bottom".  Each contestant starts on the top table, and each loss moves you down one table.
- Each round you pair up and play.  Continue until one winner remains!

The Buchholz pairing algorithm is as follows:

  1. Assign the "dominance order" lexographically - that is, primarily by the number of direct wins minus losses, then secondarily by first-order dominance wins minus first-order dominance losses, then by second-order wins minus second-order losses etc.  On round r, go no further than the r-th dominance, after that, revert to some pre-determined seed/preference rank.
  2. If an odd number of contestants remain, then you award a bye to one of the players who has the fewest byes in this tournament already.  Choose the "top" player by the definition in Clause 1.
  3. To pair the remaining contestants, you take the "top" player, and pair him/her:
    a) Primarily with an opponent they have played the fewest times already in this tournament.
    b) Among those options, choose the LOWEST ranked player with the same number of accumulated losses.
    c) If no suitable players are on the same table, search in the lower tables in descending order of preference.
  4. Delete the paired contestants, and repeat this process until pairing is complete

Longest game of my life

Let me start by saying I am a relatively new player, in Gold. Never did I imagine I would play a 2 and a half hour game in 2v2 ranked.

Our team consisted of French +Delhi and the enemy had English+Rus

The enemy went with an abominable tactic where they were spamming Rus walls non stop. It was wall upon wall upon wall with ranged units falling to the previous set of walls once we broke the front. It didn't help that they got a bigger chunk of the upper map, and with Rus you basically have unlimited passive Gold after a while, so they could spam units as much as they liked. We could literally win 5 fights in a row only to get pushed back after breaking 4-5 sets of walls.

In the end we got tired and we left the game, after a while it was no fun. The map almost ran out of wood and Hedgemaze has LOTS of wood. Has anyone ever had a similar experience in this map? Is it a strategy used often?

Toxicity is a serious problem in Age, report if needed! (my opinion)

The player in question (Gold, brand‑new account) started flaming the team from the very first minute, played the worst score in the match, and quit after 10 minutes with only 2 units lost. Looking at their match history, it’s the same pattern every game: he watches his teammates’ town centers more than their own, then quit around the 10‑minute mark.

He also claims to have “infinite accounts”. You know what that means? Is that even possible? At least if we report them and he get banned, there’s a chance he’ll have to buy the game again. It’s a small consolation, but honestly, I’d rather see a toxic player like that pay for N copies - at least the franchise grows a bit. :)

Imagine wishing death on someone over a game you’re not even good at. I don’t know if we’re dealing with a 12‑year‑old who needs guidance or a desperate adult, but aside from reporting them (already done on the official Age website, with screenshots), what tools do we actually have to protect ourselves? Do you think the Age team is doing enough?

For toxic player: you could be very good at the game, but you suck so bad in life bro.

Actions off screen

For one of my recent games I watched the replay from my opponents perspective. I thought it wouls be interesting to learn the build order etc.

I used screenlock so I should be seeing what my opponent was looking at. But after sending the start villagers their way he just focused on the scout without looking back at his camp for several minutes until he drops off his sheeps and starts the next age.

His villagers in the mean time each go to a different place from the TC an even build shit without, based on the replay, a look from my opponent.

Is this just a bug in the replay function. He smt even looks at black screens where his scout is going to.

Any tips for a noob?

Picked up the game this week on sale, absolutely love it and have completed probably 15-20 games already. So far I’ve mostly played ai and outside of the hardest difficulty there really hasn’t been much struggle, so I decided to challenge myself playing quick matches against actual players to learn the strategies and meta.

Now I wasn’t expecting to just win against a bunch of veterans that have been playing years, but my issue is so far I haven’t even made it out of dark age.

Do I need to just practice on the hardest difficulty a bunch before playing others? I don’t want to lock in bad habits only playing ai but the distance between the two right now is insane for me.

There is a capybara in AoE 3. AoE 4 also needs capybaras.

I can already imagine them in the game (definitely not as a food resource): they would be neutral at the start, but then, when you collect them with a villager, they would give “happiness” to your villagers in the form of a 5% resource gathering rate buff, acting kinda like an HRE prelate, but with a smaller buff radius and no population cap.

Also, neither military nor economic units would be able to attack them, since capybaras are too cute.

What do you think about that?

Best way to use landsknechte?

So I know the whole idea is to have a big blob of these so that you can AOE everything in front of them. Do you need to build a front line as well? Because if you mix in MAA, you’ll be obstructing other landsknechte meaning you don’t get that big aoe damage.

Desync hacking still in the game?

Is desync hacking still in this game? I was playing a 4v4 which we were about to win—both red and purple had surrendered—when, suddenly all of us get a lost connection error and a desynchronization error. Now it’s as if the game never existed. I figured these kinds of hacks were long patched, but I guess not? Luckily I took a photo of the score screen with the other team.

Please report “YisusTheBoss” for hacking. It may be that his teammates were in on it too, but couldn’t tell as they did resign and he did not. Stuff like this just ruins the game, and I really hope the devs take action on it…

How is this even possible?

I’ve been trying to beat the record for Steppe absurd conquerer on crucible and this mofo has more than 4 hours which I find hard to believe. I don’t understand because most people play byzantines and KT and this guy chose JD which from what I understand is not a great civ for this particular challenge.

Then there’s the fact that most players only get to the 2 hr mark and 4 hours just seems a little sus. Thoughts anyone?

FFA Cheater - Drop Hack?

I was in an FFA lobby with someone who chat was accusing as a known cheater called Mcpickle but I don't see any threads about him. Oddly his AOE4 world history has his last three FFAs from the previous hour all ending with no winner/losers. I figured some kind of hack where the game drops, but the weird thing is after we teamed up on him he quit and the game losing connection wasn't for another few minutes. Is this some kind of timed release to avoid getting caught or just some really weird coincidence?

Ayyubids vs macedonian Dynasty

Hello everyone,

I need help in the title's matchup.

I play mainly Ayyubids (sometimes Malians) and whenever I end matched up against macedonian I don't know what to do.

Their troops seem immune to counters (riddari melting desert raider and their spearmen are nearly immune to arrows).

On top of that a civ without eco bonuses go consistently into castle faster than me and with more army.

Last but not least their army comp varies with incredible ease due to varangian stronghold.

Is there an age choice that can even the field on ayyubid's side?

Any suggestion is welcome!

AOE4 Should Have Stolen These Ideas from Stronghold

As a big fan of the Stronghold Series when I first saw the trailer for Age of Empires 4 I was super excited, I thought Age of Empires was going to get proper siege mechanic, larger scale battles and more. But what we got, for me felt lackluster or was just absent altogether. These are the features I wish Age of Empires 4 had stolen from Age of Empires ☝️

Let me know what you guys think in the comments and don't forget to like and subscribe if you enjoy the video it really helps the channel out! Thanks for watching 🙂
