Strands

I posted a bit ago about the real rough edges on my new strands and these are the replacements, is it normal to have a dyed color leather sole ? I have read the pinned should you return thread but didn’t see an answer there. The replacement is on the left and the ones being returned are on the right with the normal light color leather sole. Thanks again for any insight

Alden vs AE Penny Loafers, side by side

Snagged some Alden’s on FB Marketplace and wanted to take some side by side pictures to compare them to the Shell Cordovan Randolph. These Alden’s are on the Aberdeen last and half a size smaller.

The biggest thing that stands out to me is the quality of the clicking is marginally better and the stitching as well. Would it justify spending another $300-400 retail? I’m not sure. The Randolphs are certainly competitive.

Thoughts?

Need help restoring New AE Penny Loafers from Nov’25 that’s discolored and cracking

Just a few months in and these loafers have shown significant cracking and drying. Used mainly car to carpet, and it’s gotten slightly wet once in a drizzle. Cedar trees have been in from Day 1.

Not sure if this is normal or a bad pair, but these are super comfortable and I want to bring them back.

What’s the best way to restore these?

Bought used on eBay how do I repair these marks?

So I’ve already used saphir renovateurx saphir burgundy crème, and saphir burgundy wax polish.

How do I repair these marks? Is this a hit with acetone and re-dye, sand paper and re-dye?

I’m not positive on next choices.

Strands

One of my favorite pairs of shoes. These are several years old and still going strong.

Um… Should I Have Conditioned Them?

My father’s vintage Edmonds have sat in a closet for 20 years and came out looking like the shoe on the right. He claims this is the original color, and the other Voyagers for sale also look more like this one. I personally thought the leather looked dry and dead, so I took some time conditioning the one on the left. Did I make a huge mistake?

Stitching and loose grain lo

Recently bought the Randolph 1.0 and really like the pair… However, there seems to be some stitching and loose grain that makes me worry about the longevity of the shoe. Should I swap these out for another pair?

Help me fix my screw up please :)

I’m somewhat seasoned with shoe care (certainly no expert) but I think I made a real stupid mistake. Hoping this sub might be able to help.

I was cleaning and conditioning my Allen Edmond shoes, I used Dubbin Grassie for this step and they were looking great.

Now for the screwup.. I decided my waxed laces needed some love so I applied a homemade mixture of beeswax and mineral oil that I use for various things around the shop. My rationale was that the mineral oil would allow the wax to soak in (hindsight tells me this was a major misstep).

I let the laces dry for a few days.. today I put the laces back in and wore them to work and to my horror watched the areas around the lace eyes and the tongue darken over the day, since I was at work I had to keep wearing them and sadly it just became more pronounced as the day wore on. I’m assuming that the mineral oil slowly leached into the leather 🤦‍♂️.

When I got home tonight I promptly removed the laces and washed them with saddle soap. I’m letting them dry but I don’t think it’s solved the problem. Any advice on how I can fix my mistake? Thanks in advance.

My new (to me) Neumoks

I'm very happy with my Neumoks. This is my fifth pair of Allen Edmonds shoes and I'm sure they won't be the last.

Is this loose grain or cracking leather?

This is my first time buying leather shoes. Not sure what I’m looking at. Would you keep these or exchange them?

Disappointed - Barnes Lace-up Sneaker

I went in wanting to like the new Barnes Lace-up Sneaker. I am honestly tired of constantly cleaning the white leather on my Courtsides, so I was ready for something new. At first glance, the Barnes checks a lot of boxes. It looks sharp, and on foot it feels comfortable.

The problem showed up right before I was about to buy them.

Standing there, wearing them, I looked down and caught something I could not ignore. Along the seam where the sole meets the upper, there was visible cracking. You could see threads and bits of glue right there while the shoe was on foot. That moment killed it for me.

I checked a few other pairs. Same result. Bend the shoe slightly and you get a faint crackling sound, along with stress in that same seam. Once I saw it, I knew it would bother me every time I wore them.

The salesperson noticed too. He mentioned he hoped they would fix the issue, or shift toward more styles based on the Courtside, which has been more consistent. That stuck with me. It made the concern feel real, not just picky.

What makes this frustrating is that the Barnes gets so much right at a glance. It looks good. It feels good. But the build does not inspire confidence, and that matters more over time.

So far, I am just not that impressed with their sneaker construction outside of the Courtside line. Most of what I own from Allen Edmonds leans heavily toward their boots, with one of the original Strand sneakers mixed in. My rotation includes pairs like Higgins Mill, Patton, Sterling, Frosty, Hamilton, and others, and those have been solid for me.

That contrast stands out. Their boots feel dependable. The sneakers, at least recently, feel less consistent.

To their credit, sizing has always worked in my favor. As someone who wears a 3E, AE has been a real advantage over the years. It is not easy to find that width done well, and they have helped me build a lineup that actually fits across different styles.

That said, I am still trying to understand the last they used for the 3E Oliver. The heel feels oversized, while the toe box runs tight and slightly pointed. It is an unusual combination for a wide fit. I can see the intent behind offering more variety, and more lasts could help more people, but this one feels off for me.

In the end, I want to like where they are going. The designs are appealing, and the comfort is there. But when something as basic as the sole-to-upper seam looks questionable before you even leave the store, it is hard to commit. Good design gets your attention, but build quality is what earns your trust.

Online Order

Trying to take advantage of the sale, but local store doesn’t have the Park Cap Toe Derbies that I’m after. Picking up a belt and shoe tree, and have a promo code that’s saving quite a bit.

Is it really a bad idea/not worth it to order online because of all the QC issues I’ve been reading here?

Quick opinion

I don’t see this flaw addressed anywhere. What is this? The leather has lines in it. I didn’t notice at first but now that I did I want to return it.
