Meet Peaches 🍑
Peaches is a sweet dog with a gentle spirit who desperately needs a hero. She recently suffered a fractured left calcaneus (a bone in the ankle/hock area) and will require long-term medications, strict immobilization, and possibly surgery to heal properly.

Despite her injury, Peaches still deserves the chance to recover in a safe and loving environment. She is currently at risk for euthanasia due to the extent of her medical needs.

marking adopt eval in morning they are barking, inside kennel and outside kennel when walking dogs by, covering them up to see if that will help calm down in the day time.

Mr. Siltan came to SD this morning, she is very vocal in her kennel , will run to the kennel door and forward bark when other dogs are walking by. Is housed with her sibling and they do play well together

as i walked in the kennel to move the pup to the other side of the kennel dog kept avoiding me moving the opposite side from where i was. and in the aftrenoon as citizens approch his kennel he greeted them from far with wagging tail.

pup goes to the other side of the kennel when i approched and when i baby talk to him he only watches me pet his sibling.

Sultan painted his kennel and was extremely vocal this morning. When I approached he was very timid, he backed into a corner of hius kennel and lowered his head while having a soft tail wag. He let me leash him and carry him to the wall. While he was tethered he tried chewing the leash, I gave him treats to redirect him.

Sultan has been quietly laying on his bed all through out the morning playing with his enrichment.

I separated Sultan and Princess yesterday afternoon. This morning when I approached Sultan he was standing at the back of his kennel, neutral body and soft wagging tail. He approached me when I offered treats, I replaced his ID band with no issues. During cleaning he was teathered to the wall and sat there quitely. He's been quite and has kept his kennel clean throughout the day.

Sultan is the quieter of the two pups. However, he will occasionally drat at the kennel door while forward barking, this happens when its other dogs and people.

Sultan painted his kennel again this morning and was extremely vocal. He was at the front of his kennel forward barking at every dog that walked past, I even noticed him wall jumping to see over the cover. When I approached to leash him, he was very timid, he backed into a corner of his kennel and lowered his head. He let me leash him and carry him to the wall. While he was tethered he tried chewing the leash, thrashed and choked himself until I was able to calm him down with baby talk and pets. While tethered he was forward barking and lunging at dogs that were in their kennels. He also snapped and snarled at one of my other dogs as I was putting that dog back into it's kennel. Kibble treats and chicken did not redirect him today.

4/30/2026: lounging at front of kennel. I opened kennel and he did not get up tried offering treats and he began to pull back tethered him to the wall and cleaned kennel. was able to guide him back into kennel and remove leash with no issues. Placing on adopt eval

5/2/2026: Mr. Grandpa was laying in his bed , body tuck under. He would not get up at all, would not take any treats. Had to carry him and just moved him to the next kennel.

5/3/2026: Grandpa was laying on his bed during feeding. I placed his food in front of him and he ate with no issues. For his walk I greeted him with baby talk and kibble treats. His tense body became relaxed and once leashed him he stood up. He walked out of his kennel slowly, but I was able to get him to follow a trail of treats out to the runs. He walked back into South with no assist from treats.

5/4/2026: Grandpa was laying on his bed during feeding. For his walk I greeted him with baby talk and kibble treats. He was ready for his walk today, stood up fast and walked on the leash with no issues. Occasionally tossed treats as a reward. He keeps his kennel clean and is quite throughout the day.

5/5/2026: Grandpa continues to show improvement with wanting to go on walks. This am he was laying on the floor with a relaxed body, when I asked him if he wanted to go outside, he bolted up with perky ears and a soft wagging tail. He leashed well and walked on a loose leash to the runs. He came back to his kennel with no issues and has been laying on his bed with a relaxed or neutral body throughout the day.

5/6/2026: Grandpa has been laying in his bed quietly, when i went into his kennel, he stared at me with a worried face. I leashed him and he walked out to the runs on a loose leash.

Abagail – "Holding for a possible owner." A confusing comment because BARC generally pauses for nothing but finding a chip in a dog, and that would not be a mere "possible." (They're supposed to check on intake, but don't. They only check just before they kill the dog.)

Rainbowdash - She seems to have calmed down. She's been put back in gen pop "due to improved behavior." May we never see her again!

I promised to go into detail with Bea and Betty, two puppies adopted from BARC and returned sick. It was parvo, which is a highly contagious and often fatal condition in dogs (and which jumped the species barrier into cats about a decade ago). It's not something you want loose in a shelter or rescue.

Bea died before her cut-off time, either on her own or genuinely euthanized. I have heard no recent news of Betty, but it's reasonable to conclude her fate was one of those two as well.

Their cases demonstrate a sad phenomenon in nonhuman rescue: human guardians with sick companions, turning them in because they cannot afford to treat the condition and hoping the shelter will.

A pretty forlorn hope it is, however. If the average human cannot afford the treatment, it's highly unlikely a shelter can, with all those mouths to feed. If the condition is very contagious or inevitably fatal, the pressure is even higher. What shelters do mostly is euthanize, more often properly used here than the murder routinely practiced and so called.

Shelters called nonkill also perform this sort of killing, I would note. I know someone whose cat died that way at our local SPCA, which like other shelters in Upstate New York is officially no kill. The cat was elderly and had heat stroke. While potentially curable, it did not make sense to the shelter financially to sink that many of their resources into one elderly, injured, and unchipped individual. Legally, it isn't killing, but euthanasia for medical reasons.

Personally, I would think it better to go into debt to pay for euthanasia straight off, so I could be there to comfort my friend's passing than hazard the "maybe they will cure them" risk. Even for obviously treatable and noncontagious conditions, such as broken legs, the odds are, they won't try. At least BARC gives the pet the chance to find a guardian who will cure before they give up on them.

05/01/26 11:00 High pitched barking, lunging at other dogs passing kennel, all three siblings at the kennel door following other dogs. Had to close the divider so they could not see other dogs passing.

Approaching kennel, Matteo and his sibling came running to the door and jumped on it with wiggly bodies and wagging tails. When passing with another dog they repeated same behavior with vocalizing.

Today i did notice he would hit the middle part of him kennel. Mr. Matteo is jumpy, High pitched barking, would run up to his door when you walked dogs by. When going in he would start with a wiggly body, once you step in he will run towards the back of his kennel.

Matteo was at the front of his kennel high pitch vocalizing this morning. For cleaning I leashed him up and tethered him to the wall. While tethered he was thrashing and high pitch vocalizing, he also made himself choke a couple times. I tossed treats and chicken and he ignored them. He wouldn't calm down unless he was close enough to touch me while cleaning.

Once back in his kennel he was forward barking and jumping on the kennel door at dogs walking past.

and she walk out of the kennel door. She walked on a loose leash to the dog runs and after leaving her in the dog run, she started to get vocal and jumping on the fence. I went back to get Boss and walk her back to her kennel and as i went to

get another dog to walk outside, I pass by her kennel with teh dog and she started to forward bark at the other dog.

Walks well on the leash with wiggly body. friendly towards people. Did well in the runs and didn't notice any dog reactivity while in the runs. However once he was in his kennel and i started to walk other dogs pass his kennel he started to lunge forward and forward bark at the dog

4/27/2026: The dog presented a wiggly body and fast wagging tail. The dog walk in a semi-loose leash, tossed treats but was not interested in them. Walk her to the dog run to potty and once she was done and left her out for a few minutes. Walking her back to her kennel, she walk in but was also trying to bolt out while trying to remove the leash him her.

4/30/2026: jumping on kennel door, very friendly is somewhat vocal and loves to play with puzzlefeeder throughout the day. was a move adopt this morning

5/1/2026: Quiet and calm in kennel. Walked with tight leash out to runs and back, but didn’t try to bolt when opening the kennel door or run gate. Did notice her blanket was very torn, but could have already been like that as I didn’t notice any threads in her kennel, but she also was trying to pull down her sheet covering kennel. Removed the sheet and she has been quiet and calm in kennel, lying down leaning against the kennel door.

5/2/2026: very friendly, is hyper in the morning when wanting to go outside. once going back to her kennel after letting her energy out she stays by kennel door waiting for when people walk by, walks on forward leash and is gentle when taking treats from hand.

I've noticed he uses his "bathroom" side kennel for his business more often than his "bedroom" side. He loves attention, baby talk, pets and treats!

5/2/2026: Adorable, soft facial expression and wiggly body with the baby talk. Takes treats with soft mouth and walks beside me so I give him some caresses.

5/4/2026: Approach kennel, Bobby held a neutral body along with a neutral face. When trying to place the leash on him, he kept moving his face away and avoiding the leash. once the leash was on him, he walk out of the kennel and walk semi-loosely to the dog run. After being outside for a few minutes went back out to get Bobby and when trying to place the leash on him, he ran away from me. I used some treats to guide him and when he smelled them I was able to place the leash on him. and walk him back to the kennel.

5/5/2026: Mr. Bobby was a move adopt this morning, he was standing by the runs door when i went leash him. Was easy to leash with baby talk and treats. Walk to the kennel on a loose leash.

Although it could've been worse, yesterday was very hard on my group. With the exception of Selma, who was injured, these were all very adoptable dogs. All they needed was a little more time.

I would just note that the same is true for the extended dogs above and the new ones we posted last evening. (Try searching for "barc 5/8" and sorting by New to see those lovely doggos.) Even Mirabelle and her puppies just need a little more time.

And if Texas would just make neutering affordable, which would be cheaper than the current method of dealing with canine overpopulation even for the subsidizers, they would have had it.

No, my pals and I do not refrain from posting small dogs because we discriminate against them. The fact is, they don't need us. I have yet to see a euth-listed dog under 20 lbs get executed, even the very old or the very sick. A human always steps up for them. Not that I wish them any harm—my soul dog was a Chiweenie—but there's so many dogs and so little time.

It's the big kids who get discriminated against, so we throw ourselves wholeheartedly into their defense.

I doubt there are any GSDs in Houston but Trina now. BARC killed them all last week.

I must say, while a good photo doesn't necessarily save a dog, I do think being stuck with only their mugshot decreases the dog's chances of survival dramatically. The intake photos also make lousy memorials. You just know there was so much more to the dog than that.

But it's better than letting them just disappear.

I am about to ascend my soapbox. I try not to get too preachy at the end of what should be a memorial to specific lost dogs, but what happened to Catalina and Katrina, rescued from the euth list for less than a day, infuriated me.

I begin to think that when there are adoptions, I should not preface them with "Best news first."

Too often, the dog is returned, sometimes immediately, as with the puppy sisters. Too often after that, the dog is put on the euth list and is killed. Arabeth, Elsa, Skye . . . that's just in the last month off the top of my head and the ones whose stories I know. I am sure there were others among those I did not.

The reasons, to a dog person, sound ridiculous. Steve-O, just over a year old when he was adopted and returned at the Harris County shelter, was "too playful." I don't remember of whom it was said, but there was a dog who "needed too much attention." With large-breed dogs, the problem often is that their humans did not train them as puppies, leaving them uncontrollable as adults. That was clearly what happened to Zen, a stunning young Cane Corso, and she died because of it.

Rescues can address the problem with pre-puppy classes and foster-to-adopt programs. Open-intake shelters like BARC cannot. Look at the extremes to which they go to get the dogs out fast enough!

Dogs experience trauma from being thrown out of their pack, which is how they look at a return to the shelter. They cannot understand why it happened, and almost all of them blame themselves. They are afraid, if given a new chance, it all might happen again and often shut down. Even if readopted, the scars can last for life.

The situation is usually worse for those dogs smart enough to put the blame where it belongs. They can become aggressive, and the demand for experienced trainers to deal with that response far exceeds the supply.

For my part, I think positive human–canine interaction training should be mandatory from an early human age. Dogs are the single nonhuman species a human is most likely to need to interact with. That the party with the larger brain and societal power should go into the interaction completely uninformed seems to me to be both insane and unconscionable.

I do know that such training would save a lot of grief on both sides of the relationship, not to mention more than a few canine lives.

That's as it may be, though, for BARC and their euth list. Once again, that's the outcome of humans' failure to use their rare and possibly unique gift of long-term foresight.

If you are in the Houston area, fostering is a wonderful way to save dogs on the euth list. Two of the dogs on yesterday's list, Ace and Phoebe, are alive today only because BARC fosters took them in.

To see the BARC euth list dogs, search for "barc" plus the month and day (so a search for today's dogs would be "barc 5/9"). Then sort by New to remove actually irrelevant garbage.

Most rescues are foster-based, so it's likely that all of the dogs who were tagged yesterday are now in foster homes. Until Texas takes neutering seriously, fosters are the single most important link in the chain of saving dogs. If Texas does ever take neutering seriously, fosters will still be the most important link in saving existing dogs.

Many people ask me how they can help. The first, best answer, wherever you are, is "Foster!" As another Redditor said, and kindly said I could steal, fostering is LOVE! all expenses paid!

05/01/26 11:00 High pitched barking, lunging at other dogs passing kennel, all three siblings at the kennel door following other dogs. Had to close the divider so they could not see other dogs passing.

Matteo was at the front of his kennel high pitch vocalizing this morning. For cleaning I leashed him up and tethered him to the wall. While tethered he was thrashing and high pitch vocalizing, he also made himself choke a couple times. I tossed treats and chicken and he ignored them. He wouldn't calm down unless he was close enough to touch me while cleaning.

Once back in his kennel he was forward barking and jumping on the kennel door at dogs walking past.
