Inheriting dad’s Volvo for school + questions

I’m about to get my driver’s license in 3 months and my dad decided to bring the old family Volvo out of retirement and give it to me for daily use. I’ll not be using it for long distance (only from home to school and back and probably for some hangouts) and it looks cool af so i’m very happy that my dad decided to give me this beautiful brick.

I have some questions though, mainly about reliability. Sure volvos are known to be tanks but I heard there were some engine problems in the 240 especially in the earlier models. for you all that use the 240 as a daily car, does it have any problems?

and also my dad lowered the car a bit. although it looks cool af the roads here suck ass, speed bumps, holes, uneven paving, so on and so on. sure i could use the good ol fashioned spin the wheel and turn it back around before hitting speed bumps and such but im worried about the frame underneath. will it withstand a couple scrapes on the bottom ?

that’s all, thanks dad for this orange brick love you

Need help. Sometimes when I put my 240 (auto trans) into reverse the engine bogs down. There have been a couple times that it probably would have stalled out if I didn’t give it gas. Any tips?

Tips for 900 mile drive from Illinois to New York?

I recently inherited my grandma’s garage-kept 1988 champagne 240 DL which has approximately 80,000 to 90,000 miles on it (the odometer broke before she passed away and she never had it repaired). As a kid I was promised this car and my grandpa has been taking it out of the garage once a week to keep it running. However he’s tired of seeing his late wife’s car in the garage and I'm going to pick it up.

I’m wondering if anyone has any tips on what I should check before taking the car on the road. Also, what should I have in the car, such as extra coolant, oil, and other essentials? Lastly, if there’s anything I can do to ensure the car makes it on this 900-mile journey please let me know.

Any tips would be greatly appreciated! If you’ve ever driven from Chicago to New York please share any recommendations you may have.

Thanks!

Oil filter relocation bracket

I am gathering parts for a +t on my 1989 m47 245. I pulled the water/oil cooler off of a 92 740t. I want to use the relocation bracket with my thermostatic sandwich plate bolted to the end.

The probkem is I need the bolt that holds the sandwich plate to the filter relocater. The bolt that comes with the water to oil cooler is designed for use with the much thicker sandwich plate that coolant flows through. Does anyone know

  1. if this has been done before? I couldn’t find any information out there on it already

  2. if you can purchase the air/oil cooler bolt anywhere?

  3. my first thought was to have a machine shop shorten the existing bolt to the point where it will fit my application. Does this seem like a bad idea?

Thanks in advance, any advice is appreciated

Thoughts on these wheels?

(Not my photo, just an example)

Found a set of 15x7 ET8 wheels off a 93’ Chevy Caprice for ~$300. Any thoughts on how these would look under a brick?

Anyone got a front passenger side window for sale (87 240) in the Tri state area/Hudson Valley

Didn’t do my due diligence and bought a window from an ‘84. The kid said he knew it’d fit for certain and I just really needed a window lol. But there’s a slight gap. Maybe there’s something wrong with the track or regulator? Could use advice.

This makes me happy

Lots of elbow grease later.. I can drop this head off at the machine shop tomorrow. Simple Green HD and brass brushes/wheels/pressure washer.

I soaked the valves on seafoam overnight and used a wire wheel on my drill holding them in a vice. The soak helped a lot with breaking down the petrified gunk.

Everyone Meet Cherry

1993 240, 4speed auto, heated seats, and mirrors, and AC. Restomodding to factory new, needs an alignment, new brakes, the heat doesn't work (maybe heater core god I hope not), radio doesn't work (FM is super quiet and cassettes just make static at a loud volume), and paint work. 0 rust at all as she's a garage baby PNW car. 167k miles and I'm pretty damn happy to have a daily to restore and ride around in, folks love this thing and it just feels so relaxing to drive.

Parts are finally soda blasted, prepped, primed & painted. Going to be assembling it all today.

Had a small crash last year. After putting out the word, soon had all the required parts from the local 240 community around Sydney. A friend from work was a panel beater/ painter in a previous life and has them cured and ready to put on today.

My Unhinged Valve Cover

I have a problem and like to do unethical things to my builds.

Overkill? Maybe. Do I like it? YES Do I care what others think? No. I don't even go to meets or Cars and Coffee.

But if someone was looking to change up their valve cover, I am open to share info and not gatekeep.

I took a Honda K24 vc and cut out the oil cap bung and had it welded in. I went with a Level7 Performance Quick Vent 2.2 oil cap and Dyme PSI quick disconnect fittings. It will be routed to a Nuke Performance competition catch can.

But now I have more oil cap options such as Chasing J's, LDC, and other Niche brands that is not IPD.

The regular cap on there is a Lonely Drivers Club Juliet cap.

Going to be honest that wasn’t that fun

After battling rusted tensioner screws the job is finished.
