What's it like around 90th between 1st and 2nd Ave?

Hi! Me and my boyfriend are relocating to the city for work. We are both in our early 20s and are coming from the suburban South, so the city will definitely be an exciting and humbling change. We aren't able to in-person tour so we are relying a lot on Facetime calls and virtual tours. We're looking at a place in the UWS on 91st between West End and Broadway or a place in the UES, on 90th between 1st and 2nd.

One of our work locations is more up north, kinda near Yonkers. We were hoping to take the train up north then walk from there, but we are also considering bringing a car and if we do, we probably will pay the cost of garage parking, which is ok. Please feel free to tell me we are in over our heads, as public transport is very very new to us!

I have been doing a lot of research on like every UWS and UES reddit post ever and a lot of people say the sense of community is better on the UWS. That's important to us, as well as safety because I know we will appear as Southern bumpkins who are clearly transplants.

We are very excited for the move, so any advice or insights are welcomed, thanks!

Is an Equinox membership worth it?

Hi neighbors! I'm thinking about getting an Equinox membership and was hoping to get feedback on whether or not it's worth it. Since their membership policies are pretty opaque online, I was specifically wondering:

1.) Does a normal membership allow you to visit different locations in the same neighborhood? For example, I don't need to be able to get into every Equinox in the city, but I'm pretty much equidistant to the 92nd St and 85th St locations so it would be nice to be able to use both of them.

2.) Any thoughts on the above locations (92nd St and 85th St)? Is one better than the other?

3.) Does the cost of membership include any classes, or are those a separate cost?

4.) Perhaps niche, but can anyone compare their experience at 92NY to Equinox? I belong to the Y now and I've never been a fancy gym girl...is Equinox really worth it?

TIA for your thoughts!

Wanted to share this in case it helps someone avoid the same mistake.

I ordered an adjustable gold chain and 3 gemstone charms during the Black Friday sale. It didn't arrive until the end of January and the ruby birthstone looked NOTHING like the photos online. No facets, no clarity...instead totally opaque. I emailed them the day after delivery, and that turned into almost 2 months of back-and-forth.

In the midst of all this, they had the audacity to CHANGE THE LISTING PHOTO for the ruby birthstone. So I guess they figured out they couldn't provide rubies that matched the original photo (see attached image of my order confirmation email vs what is pictured on the website now) and they changed it! Talk about false advertising.

They offered replacement options, but they all looked the same as the original (low quality, didn’t match the listing at all). On top of that, the adjustable gold chain doesn’t even work properly and won’t hold its position. I asked for a refund since it was pretty clear they couldn’t provide what they advertised. They actually agreed at first, then came back and said store credit was the only option...even though I reported the issue within 24 hours of receiving the item and had been working with them the entire time.

I ordered from them years ago and had a good experience, which makes this even more surprising. I know Stephanie has been vocal online about losing her footing at the company and that clearly is showing. Quality and customer service are not what they used to be. Beware!!!

What I received...

The original image from their site and my order confirmation email

What their website only NOW depicts...

Do people like living here? I am coming from the UWS and I wonder if I will find it too quiet. Appreciate your perspective!

The UES location of Il Laboratorio del Gelato is now open (63rd and Lex)

Just opened maybe a week ago or so. Open daily from 12 to 10. I think there were 25 or 30 flavors, which can rotate daily to weekly, as their original location on the LES has made 400+. Would recommend their gelato over their sorbet, which tends to be icy.

Personal flavor recommendations from previous visits: Turkish fig, amaretto crunch, hazelnut, Thai chili chocolate, and pistachio. For sorbet, the grape is fine. Also, for folks who want pints, they look pricey but are 20 oz, so it makes them a bit more worth it.

I stopped by Artara Coffee today and was pleased to see it was busy. Our neighborhood’s only Cambodian coffee shop, its below-street-level space poses a challenge for walk-in traffic, but the bright orange color scheme helps. I enjoy the coffee, which is more of a dark roast style.

Newborn sleep tips that actually work?

My best friend just had a newborn and they’ve been having a rough time getting the baby to sleep consistently. Figured I’d ask here since I know a lot of people have been through it. Any tips, routines, or tricks that genuinely helped?

This building is priced and marketed like a quiet, higher-end rental. That has not been my experience. There have been ongoing disturbances on certain floors, including repeated situations where the police have been called. This has happened on a frequent and consistent basis for over a year.

Management is aware of the situation, but claim there is nothing they can do regarding other tenants, and except for sending reminders and notices on building quiet hours, it has not been resolved in a meaningful way.

If you are expecting a peaceful, well-managed environment, especially at this price point, you should think twice. The reality is that parts of the building do not match what you would reasonably expect when you are paying $5K for a studio, and even more for larger, more premium apartments.

Before signing anything here, I would strongly recommend:

  • Asking direct questions about noise complaints and incident history on your specific floor
  • Visiting the building at night, not just during the day
  • Trying to speak with current tenants if you can

Not every unit may be affected, but enough of the building is that it is worth taking seriously. At this price, basic respect and quiet should not be a question.
