Mule Fishing horsefly ftw

Got my ultralight kastking zephyr setup in earlier this week. Spooled it up with 2lb SOS line.

Was able to take it out yesterday for a couple hours. Had a great time with the black and ranch-hand colors. Ate shit slipping in the mud but worth it. Caught these guys along with a few others.

More vintage goodness, Shakespeare 2499

This is one of the most overlooked micro lites out there. Made in Japan, 2 beefy stainless ball bearings, and a relatively quiet (for its time) anti reverse setup. This was a competitor to the Daiwa Gold and Silver series of the same day. It weighs just 5.8 ounces, half an ounce less than a Mini Mite. It has the same line capacity and also a somewhat beefier drag system as the drag washer is larger in diameter. These are somewhat rare and command good money on eBay, fetching $100-$200 depending on condition.

Vintage Penn 716Z and my ultralight bag

Just put this little combo together. Was missing the model # plate, so dropped in a ruthenium/gold clad Indian head penny for looks..

Perch on the Kirisame and Keitech Mono Spin Jig

One of my favorite finesse jigs with my Kirisame Ultimate. Hitting some nice yellow perch at the lake today

My latest, Daiwa Mini Mite

Scored this in a trade and it cleaned up great! It's going on a 5' Seasir Silent Stream and will be my trunk combo when me and the family are out and about. Such a simple, durable, and well performing reel.

Finally, first fish of 2026

Been out on and off since March but have been skunked mercilessly.

Today my luck changed and I landed one fish. Did not measure or weigh it but looks to be 14 or 15 inches. Pretty fat also.

On my ultralight with a 4 lb leader she gave me a good fight.

Daiwa Presso with a JDM Legalis, 6lb braid to 4lb flouro.

I forget what the lure is called but it is about 4 inches long.

Had been throwing a white curly tail grub and a hellgrammite plastic from Eurotackle. The hellgrammite got a couple of strikes but I could not set the hook. The white curly tail got nothing.

My most unique bait

Yes, that is a Mule Fishing Horsefly on a 1/64 oz Mule Jig, which is a terrific lure, but not wholly unique. What makes it different is before this catch, after I had retrieved a cast and was holding the horsefly up while contemplating my next cast, a dragonfly landed on it and, I guess, proceeded to try to mate. It got stuck on the mule horsefly. And rather than knocking it off, I decided to cast it. It floated while flapping its wings a couple of casts which attracted some bluegill, but on the third cast it sank and that’s when this bass hit it. I’m trying to decide on calling it a drorsefly or a horagonfly.
