Family Weekend =,)

Hey guys! It's so nice to see everyone and their parents here on Green St. Walking, laughing, going on pub cycles etc. It's so sweet.

As an international student, maybe I can speak on their rest's behalf, it makes us miss home and so happy to see everyone and their families! =). I hope y'all have a great weekend and enjoy this weather.

Family won't pay for UIUC anymore

So a bit of context, I got into UIUC Grainger as an international and 4 other safeties. I'm really grateful for this opportunity and up until recently, my parents were willing to look into the finances and consider paying the 71k given that I do on-campus jobs and shift out of dorms after first year. Now they're no longer willing to, they do not think I'll be able to land an on campus job nor any internship. We previously discussed that if things don't work out, I'll then transfer out to cheaper options, but now they're discarding that option too.

It'd really really help if someone could tell me how common it is to find on campus jobs here, and if there are any intls here, is it difficult to get CPT authorisation for off campus jobs in your second year? I don't know if this is possible but I heard you can get in-state tuition rate apparently after a year or residency? I'm just devastated, this was my dream school and I didn't get into any other reach (waitlists), the opportunities and prospects graduating from UIUC outweigh those of my safeties... even though I'm incredibly grateful for being able to attend each of them
Thank you

Looking for new ways to meet a potential girlfriend

My past dates were either grad students who left town (one I met on tinder, and the other I met through dancing), girls I met overseas (visited Philippines and Indonesia), or girls who didn't meet my standards (bad habits she couldn't quit, obnoxious personality, and one of them cheated). One almost worked, but after dating for a couple months she decided she wasn't ready for a relationship yet because she didn't have a job and she wanted to be able to pay bills.

When I walk around campus, I see couples everywhere. Where are these guys meeting their girlfriends, or are my standards too high? My brother met his at work three years ago, and now they are married. Another friend knew his since highschool, and now she's pregnant and they're living together.

I feel like I'm missing something. I miss having someone to hug

When will the ACs open again in dorms?????

It’s about time someone calls this out because my room has been a constant 76 degrees everyday with both windows open also a fan. It’s fucking 60 deg+ everyday. I thought the minimum was 50+ for like a few consecutive days. We pay more than apartments for this shit?

What happens when a small number of students sign up for a class

I signed up for this niche technical elective (ABE 412: Applied Data Science for ABE) and every time I check how many people signed up for the class, it’s only me. The class has 35 seats.

would the class be cancelled or what?

Where can I find a cheap 1b1b in Urbana-Champaign?

Hey, I’m looking for a 1b1b (not shared apartment) in the $650–700 range. It doesn’t have to be anything great, just little bit decent. Is it possible to find something like that within 1–2 miles of campus?

Engineering Open House

Congratulations to all the students who presented and put on the engineering open house. You all did an incredible job! It was really fun to go around and look at all the work you’ve done over the year.

I can’t wait for the next EOH!

How many classes do freshmen’s take on avg?

Coming from high school I always took around 5-7. But I’m unsure since college is a lot more rigorous and deep.

Is UIUC stats major still a target for companies compared to CS + Stats major

I basically applied for cs+econ as a transfer and stats as my second choice. I am confused if cs + econ will open as many options for my data analyst/quant career route compared to stats with a cs minor. Also I can't see any rankings for statisitcs majors from us news or linkedin but I can see the cs rankings

How do international students fund a $60,000/year Civil Engineering Master's in the USA? (From Kenya, need advice)

Hi everyone,

I’m looking for honest advice and guidance on how to fund a Civil Engineering Master’s degree in the United States as an international student.

I recently received admission to the Civil and Environmental Engineering graduate program in UIUC, and this is a potentially life-changing opportunity for me. I come from Kenya and recently graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Civil and Construction Engineering. I am currently working at a water development agency, and my long-term goal is to specialize in water resources and infrastructure development to help improve water systems and dam projects in Africa.

The challenge is funding.

The tuition and other fees come to around $60,000 per year, which is far beyond what I or my family can afford. I am actively searching for:

- External scholarships (independent, not university-specific)

- Graduate assistantships

- Fellowships

- Sponsorships or foundations

I have already started reaching out to professors and the financial aid office, and I am applying for external scholarships and development-focused programs. However, I would really appreciate advice from people who have been in a similar situation.

My questions:

  1. How do international students usually fund such expensive programs?

  2. Are there independent scholarships or charities that support African engineering students?

  3. Is it realistic to secure assistantships after admission?

  4. Are there strategies or steps I should take immediately to increase my chances of funding?

  5. Has anyone here successfully funded a master’s in engineering with little financial backing?

This opportunity means a lot to me because it could significantly change my career and allow me to contribute to water and infrastructure development globally.

Any advice, suggestions, or personal experiences would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you.

Sub

Hi, I’m subleasing for the next academic school year fall 2026 and spring 2027. It’s a 3 bed 2 bath loft at yugo champaign so it’s super close to green street and main campus. The rent is 819 base and all utilities are included except electricity. I’m subleasing the shared bathroom room not the lofted space. Theres a great balcony space as well that’s looking over the park and you can see red lion from there as well. There’s amenities w multiple common spaces and a space to workout. There’s elevators and pets are allowed. Let me know if you're interested!

Question about NetID and email

Is the password you set for your NetID going to be the password you use to log into your email? I set my NetID up about 2 weeks ago but I can't log into my email with the same password even though I don't remember setting a different on for the email. When I hit reset password it brought me to the NetID page but even after resetting the password I can't log into my email with the new one. Can anyone help?

CS 340 vs CS 233 CS 341

I’ve seen the chart comparing which topics are covered by each course, but I don’t actually know how those topics are used in jobs. So can you please share insight of choosing one of the option in aspect of future career/ job perspective? I know taking 340 gives more cloud based system knowledge + 2 upper level courses instead of deep level on machine code and hardware knowledge, but how does each option relates to which job fields?
