Taking Look at UCLA's Most Intense Position Battle
The problem is not with the players skills but with Cronin and staff not continuing to develop their players.
For example players like Aday Mara and Brandon Williams were used infrequently because their skill set was not good enough according to Cronin.
Aday leaves for Michigan and receives good coaching which improves his offense, defense and rebounding skills that he supposedly lacked at UCLA.
Brandon Williams, Bilodeau, Perry and Dailey supposedly all lacked foot speed to play man to man defensive so Cronin decided to implement a zone defense instead of coaching them to move their feet laterally to defend their opponent.
Legendary UCLA Coach John Wooden actually taught and coached basketball fundamentals to all his players. Cronin complained that his players were delusional and played soft but never taught them the basic fundamentals on how to rebound. Standing next to an opponent under the basket and then hoping to out jump for a rebound wasn’t a fundamental taught by coach Wooden.
The current power forwards recruited by Cronin all need to develop offensive shots next season within an offense that is hopefully based upon movement and passing instead of standing in a corner for a three point shot or trying to score one on one over a defender.
UCLA‘s success will be a reflection of the coaching the players receive both as a team and individually.
