There is nothing so wrong in this world that a polished aluminum-bodied 1957 Triumph TR3 cannot cure. Other surprises include Girling discs up front, Alfin rear drums, a bored-out, high-comp engine with a big valve head and Webers, Ford 5-speed, and Quaife limited slip diff. What a tasty dish.
Triumph's Stag had all the right ingredients to be a U.S. market success: Crisp Michelotti styling, visionary Harry Webster engineering, even a lusty V8 engine. What it did not have was build quality. Poor execution and even worse post-sale care snatched tragedy from the jaws of Triumph.
My TR3A rebuild - part 3
A brief update on the rebuild. Welding continues, 100 hours in.
The Triumph Roadster was produced by the Standard Motor Company from 1946 to 1949. It was first available as the Triumph 1800 Roadster from 1946 to 1948 and then as the Triumph 2000 Roadster from 1948 to 1949. Triumph had been purchased by the Standard Motor Company in 1944 and the managing director of Standard, Sir John Black, wanted a sports car to take on Jaguar, who had used Standard engines before the war.
Bizarrely, Frank Callaby styled the front of the car while fellow designer Arthur Ballard turned his talents to the back half. A stunted appearance was narrowly avoided at the cockpit join, where three-abreast seating was married up with a column-mounted four-speed.
Sir John Black was known to be dictatorial, and claimed that it was his proverbial way or the highway. The car had its appeal, he claimed, which meant that he liked it, and that was enough. He signed off on its production, only to watch it sink in the market.
When the XK120 was unveiled at the 1948 Earl's Court show, that was the death knell. Triumph's new 2000 roadster was immediately outclassed.
A total of 2,501 examples of the 1800 and 2000 were built with production ending in October 1949.
Sir John Black wanted to build a Triumph that would take on Jaguar; The Triumph Roadster was a miss by a country mile.
Diff Help For LS TR4 Build
Hey all, I’ve got a question. I’d like to build a TR4 with a LS1 or LS3 as a engine, I’ve looked on quite a few sites, but for the most part they’re Ford 302 builds, if anyone has built it or has a rough idea of what mods or parts I can use to help put power down using what diff I’d appreciate it. I don’t imagine the a stock diff from the TR4 can truly deal with the power of a LS engine and it would just result in the tires being lit up.
Thanks for any advice given.
Hi all, I have a late (125nhp) UK spec TR6 with a misfire.
Whilst running I have pulled the injectors, 1 at a time and have seen that there are 2 injectors that are dripping rather than atomising.
I have swapped the injectors and and the injector stayed common. I bought a new set of injectors and still have the issue,
I am running a Bosch fuel pump (albeit 25 years old)
When driven, the car runs on all 6 when at roughly 2000rpm.
Just wondered if anyone had any suggestions before I replace the pump or metering unit.
Thanks in advance.
Rocket powered Spitfire. Feasible?
So I have a dream. I want to buy a project Spitfire and a totaled Rocket 3 and swap the engines, possibly adding a supercharger kit to compensate somewhat for doubling the weight of the vehicle. My question is obviously is this feasible? Is it even possible to mount the rocket motor in the little Spitfire? Is the extra weight going to rip the motorcycle transmission apart? Can I get the bike shaft drive to connect to a car differential?
I know I'd be in over my head. I also know that there are easier and probably faster/more effective swaps. I just wanna make something weird and unique, but also fun and quick.
Agnetha Fältskog's 1968 Triumph Spitfire Mk3
So, according to the Internet, her (the ABBA singer's) white 1968 Triumph Spitfire Mk3, which she bought in 1969, belonged to someone in Hamburg, Germany, before it was sold to someone in the German federal state of Thuringia (Thüringen) in 2003, which is its last known location. After that, there is no official record of its whereabouts. And since this is Reddit and not the Internet: Does anyone have any information about what happened to the car? Has it stayed with the same (last) owner (who could that be?), was it sold to someone else somewhere else? What would be its current value? Would really appreciate it if anybody who knows something could shine a light on this.
First post.
I'm new here. I'm sort of a Triumph guy.
I was curious on what the spitfire community is the best exhaust for both looks and sounds, I’m not trying to be overly loud, but I don’t like the look of the stock exhaust.
