I started playing four years ago with zero athletic background.
Here’s what I know now that i wish someone had told me when I started:

1- Your non- dominant had controls your backhand.

2- Footwork is so important to learn and practice!!!

3- I will plateau many times, but keep working! Don’t give up.

Would love to build a list from this thread 😄🎾

Need your insights as a beginner player 😅

I started tennis coaching last January. Since then, I’ve been attending at least 2x a week, around 3-hour group sessions each time.

My current coach isn’t accredited, self-taught lang siya but he’s been playing since high school so magaling naman talaga. Super affordable din yung rate niya so no complaints na there. I’d say he can teach naman. Modern style yung coaching niya very focused on proper form and technique.

The problem is until now, hindi pa rin ako and/or my group ganun ka-consistent sa rallies and ball control.

Kanina, I tried training with a different coach, kinda old na around 60. Varsity player since high school, and naging coach na rin siya sa NCAA and UAAP schools before. Pero old-school style siya magturo. More on control and consistency kaysa “perfect form.” He even said na wala silang strict grips or finishes, kung saan comfortable dun sila. Pero interestingly, yung intermediate students niya now modern naman yung style ng strokes, so medyo napaisip ako if alin talaga tinuturo niya.

Hindi naman niya completely binago strokes ko today, but he made small modifications and mentioned na yung current modern (style ko from first coach) is more “pang pro,” in demand, and technically demanding. So now I’m wondering if tama naman talaga yung current first ko and maybe I just underperformed the skill today?

What also discouraged me a bit was seeing some beginners there na 1 week pa lang naglalaro but marunong na mag mini tennis and rally. Oo minsan moonball and incomplete form pa, but honestly nakakabilib kasi after just 7 days may control na sila.

Meanwhile ako and ng group ko, sobrang tagal bago kami naka-rally consistently. Even mini tennis may struggle pa din. Nilunod kami sa stationary drills, ball feed at pinag-real game na so outcome is namamatay agad yung bola. Pareho naman kaming group coaching so I can’t really use the “baka need private coaching” excuse para mas matutukan.

Now I’m honestly questioning:
- Mabagal ba progress ko?
- Is my current coach too focused on form?
- Or magaling lang talaga yung old-school coach sa beginners?

Would you guys continue training with both coaches for now? Or stick to one system muna?

Coaching rant

Restringing service recommendations.

Looking for a reliable and trusted restringing service in or around the Pasig area.

I understand that most sports shops (Chris, Toby's) offer the service but I wanna hear from personal experiences and testimonials, good or bad. Someone who doesn't just strings but can also educate you on what would work best for you.

Had a bad experience at a ver big sports specialty store in Tiendesitas thinking that they know their stuff but stringer damaged the grommets on my new racquet and did an 18x19 pattern on a 16x19 racquet. I should've done a better job at looking for a reliable one than to settle for a "quick fix".

Your recommendations are well appreciated.

I had a booking at an indoor court. Family stuff came up and I almost cancelled. Then I thought — when's the last time I did something just for me?
So I went. By myself. Hit against the wall for an hour. Didn't speak to another human. Just hit the ball.
I haven't felt that relaxed in weeks.

I think tennis is therapy for me and I'm happy I’m figuring this out!

Do others feel this way?
Is tennis more than just a sport for you? 😊

Looking for Full Court with Tennis Ball Machine

Hi, I know medyo marami yung indoor tennis courts na may ball machine but those are "mini" courts and the balls only go a certain speed considering the available space. I'm looking for full courts around Metro Manila with available tennis ball machines for rent.

Thank you!

Why are there no tennis shoes everywhere?

I have been looking for nike and adidas options but there seems to be no variety and/or stocks everywhere! Is there a shortage or issue? Will they be releasing new colorways or versions soon?

ps really eyeing to buy nike vapor pro 3 and this previous colorway is really nice!

Newbie From South

Hey guys! I'm looking to pick up tennis as a new hobby and honestly have never touched a racket in my life. I did play football when I was younger therefore would like to think I have kinda some athletic background, but I understand that tennis is a completely different activity. Would love to get some advice from anyone who's been in the same boat or have insigths:

  1. How long would it take to become decent or semi-decent as a complete beginner? Curious on what does the learning curve typically looks like
  2. How much does it cost to hire a tennis coach in the Philippines? Are there group lessons that might be more affordable than one-on-one sessions? (hoping this is in south area)
  3. Where can I play in the south? I'm based in Parañaque - are there public or pay-per-hour courts nearby? (tried calling club united paranaque; they are very unresponsive)
  4. What equipment do I need to start out, and how much should I budget for a beginner racket? Are there any suggested brands; hoping for cheap ones for the meantime
  5. Should I take lessons first before just hitting on my own, or is it okay to self-practice using YouTube tutorials in the meantime?
  6. Are there any beginner-friendly tennis communities or groups in south (Alabang, Paranaque, Makati) where I can find hitting partners at a similar level?

Thanks in advance!
