What is the Swindon hidden gem that locals know about but that most people passing through would never find and why does it not get more attention?

What has actually improved about Swindon in the last five years that people here would point to if they were being honest rather than just reflexively negative?

Not looking for tourism board answers. Looking for the things that people who live here have genuinely noticed getting better. Infrastructure, venues, food scene, community stuff, whatever. The easy version of this conversation is just to list problems and there are plenty. But there must be things that are genuinely moving in the right direction .

What made Swindon the most favourite diasporic space for Goans to settle in?

Figures show that Swindon has the highest absolute number of Goan immigrants and second + third gens residing, followed closely by Wembley and Harrow in West London. It is the largest home, especially in inner areas like Broadgreen, County Ground, Eastcott and New Town.

I wonder how Swindon is the most attractive destination for that community.

I’m a Swindon local and I built a site to help us swap stuff for free. Would love some feedback!

Hi everyone,

I live over in Coate and I’ve been working on a project called Swapze (swapze.com).

I got fed up with the fees on eBay and the general sketchiness of FB Marketplace lately, so I wanted to build something just for swapping and trading items directly.

It’s still very much in the "early days" and I'm looking for my first 10-20 users to help me test if it actually works for people here. If you have 5 minutes to take a look or even list one random thing you were going to bin/donate anyway, I’d really appreciate it.

No pressure at all, just trying to build something useful for the town! If you have ideas on how to make it better, please let me know.

I've also got a bunch of flyers that I would like to distribute, so if anyone knows any good places/noticeboards I can put some on, that would be awesome!

Cheers!

[EDIT]

I am more than happy to negotiate something in return for the first few people to list some items up 😄 Just give me a shout and can work something out

Hello,

My spouse and I are moving for a job in Swindon and we are looking at options for renting around the area. We haven’t been to the area yet but would love some insight and pros and cons on places we should consider. Or if there are better suggestions we will gladly listen.

We like outdoor activities and being able to walk places easily. We aren’t big into nightlife but love a good pub. Nearby gym and coffee/tea shop would be lovely. But we will have two cars so driving isn’t an issue either if it’s a nicer area to live in.

Looking for friends

Hi everyone! My name is Johnathan and I’m 37 from Newcastle. I’ve been living in Swindon since 2022 and I have still not made any friends yet. I love different types of cultures from all walks of life and would be nice just to have someone to hang out with

saw someone else do this... i just moved from london for work and would love to get to know some people here, reddit honestly seemed like the most chill place to look.

context: 32M, half-british half-japanese, single apartment. university (mis)educated. now (finally) got a decent government job which is technical adjacent but probably not in the way you'd guess...

hobbies/interests:

  • internet culture, podcasts, comedy
  • teaching (philosophy/theory)
  • freelance journalism
  • DJ/production (ableton)
  • anime aesthetics
  • graphic design (mostly music posters in photoshop/premiere and more recently blender)
  • any music, esp Chicago footwork
  • NOT fine art (used to work for Christie's, it's a scam..)
  • have spent time in US (study & work)
  • talking about class

hope i haven't come accross as a deeply annoying person. i still sometimes go to london on weekends sometimes but keen to explore bristol and the wider area too

if anyone else wants to join the thread feel free or DM me if you wanna connect. up for walks - people like to talk badly about swindon but the parks and natural beauty are amazing

Hi All,

We are considering buying a house in Swindon. My husband is a chef in London and I work from home with no kids. Which areas in Swindon are good for daily commuters? Do you suggest buying a house in Swindon?

Any kind od advise is much appreciated before we make a big decision.

Thank you,

I’ve been craving decent pizza ever since my favourite place in Trowbridge closed. Can anyone please recommend a good pizza place in Swindon?

Edit: Idk why I asked like this. I meant: What will the results be like in Swindon the 7th May?

I know, Politics. This is one off. I wil never do that on this sub again. Forgive me mods.

Considering how increasingly polarised the UK has gotten, it will be polarised too in Swindon. I can feel it when I commute in town, seeing the people, I can tell who they will vote for. Not to mention investigating and privately interviewing the protestors and rallies outside of Meca in March.

Places that are predominantly white are likely to be Reform voters (middle and outer areas like Park North, Pinehurst, Penhill, Nythe), Chiseldon and Wroughton voting Restore UK, while inner areas which are white minority (e.g. Broadgreen, New Town) will vote Green

What do you think and feel?

Driving a Motorbike

Hi all. I’m thinking of getting a motorbike instead of a car. I’ve had a number of car driving lessons but I just can’t push through, I always wanted to ride a bike. What’s the best way to go around this? Where to take tests/lessons, or can anyone please give me tips or advice? Thank you

Hi everyone,

I’ll be moving to Swindon soon for work and I’m considering buying a bicycle for daily commuting. I wanted to ask about the general cycling experience in Swindon.

How cycle friendly is the town overall? Are the roads and traffic conditions suitable for commuting by bike, especially around the town centre and business areas? I would also like to know whether there are decent cycle lanes or shared paths.

I’m also curious about cycling more generally in England. Is it convenient to take bicycles on trains or public transport for longer trips or weekend travel? For example, are bikes usually allowed on trains without too much difficulty?

Any advice, local experience, or recommendations would be really appreciated. Thanks!

Afternoon :)

I’m after good value end of tenancy clean recommendations that hopefully won’t cost have a deposit, as a few quotes I’ve gotten have considerably exceeded my budget (£350-ish)

Not sure my expectations aren’t right here, but £500 for a day of cleaning seems excessive to me for a 2-bed house.

If someone knows anyone or a good reasonably priced company that could help, I’d immensely appreciate it!

Hey, I am part of a football league that is bringing more inclusive and gender diverse football to the south west region.

We have clubs from Cardiff down to Cornwall today.

I’ve always been surprised that Swindon doesn’t seem to have any such team, considering the population.

Do LGBTQ+ and/or gender diverse teams exist in Swindon today and I can’t find them? Or is it something that no one has setup yet?

Thanks

Hi all - I recently received an apprenticeship offer around Freshbrook (being vague for privacy) and needed help in deciding where to live (assuming I take the offer, I have another pending but I'd like to be prepared)

Essentially, where is nice? Where should I avoid? It's entry-level so I won't have the best income but i'm not fancy i'd just like to be safe! (take-home pay of under 20 grand). I hear Shaw is nice, and close, but would I have trouble even finding a decent 1 bed/1 bath affordable?

I also don't drive yet so a bus journey under 50 min is preferred but Swindon seems well-connected!

Any advice appreciated :)

EDIT: I don't smoke, have pets, etc. and don't mind sharing or being alone
