Tips on starting up

Many people in my life have told me that I should try stand up comedy because I make them laugh a lot. I have observed that while most other people tell stories and I call that as anecdotal comedy whereas I can make joke about the topic a group is discussing about. that being said, I have problems writing a proper set as I don't know how to start and what to write. Would really be grateful if experienced people here could guide how to start. Thanks and cheers.

Does anyone have experience with NACA or APCA?

These are two organizations that book entertainment and other events for colleges. There are fees associated with going to their showcases. Has anyone tried it? Are the fees and effort worth it

NACA seems to be the more well known organization, but I found their website was not very easy to navigate, and had a bare bones amount of information about the process.

What should people know if they want to join one of these organizations and go to showcases?

There's a tiny bit of information and a useful link at the following site:

The most of the article is behind a paywall though.

Raving About Open Mics So Far / France

I've wanted to try stand-up for nearly a decade now. In November of 2025 I did my first open mic. It was... absolutely amazing. The room was full and I actually got laughs, and the biggest was during one of my most vulnerable topics (a suicide attempt). Since then I've done a second and a third, and I'll be doing my fourth this Sunday. I'm having an absolute blast and I'm so glad a friend pushed me to finally do this. I just wanted to share how absolutely giddy I am about the journey so far, and thank this community which I regularly lurk and which helped me decide whether to use "muffin" or "cookie" in reference to a vagina. Your help on this matter was invaluable.

P.S. Do any of you happen to be located in France or Switzerland? I would love to meet some fellow comics in my area.

Which comedians do you want to see a biopic of?

I would love to see a Richard Pryor movie. His life was filled with so much drama and adversity that he had to deal with on personal and professional level. I feel like we need more comedian biopics. Who do you want to see get a movie?

Who said it

Okay I’ve noticed I’ve been saying “well let me learn you something” I know it’s from a comedian but for the life of me, I can’t remember who said it, or the context. But it’s been a part of my daily bits for a while. WHO SAID IT. SOMEONE PLEASE HELP. I KNOW ITS NICHE BUT ITS GOT A HOLD ON ME

At an open mic, I walked three audience members and got booed. Has this happened to anyone else?

Feedback on my first 10

Done a heap of 5-7 min sets. This is the first time doing 10. I know I look at my hand way too much and the lighting wasn't great at the room.

Just looking for feedback on the set etc. All advice welcome.

Mitch Hedberg sets posted on Letterman channel 4/23/26

There were some jokes I had not heard here. Watch him win a reluctant audience over in that first set.

Genuinely bummed about Nikki Glaser’s new face

I know she isn’t for everyone. She’s obviously changed now that she’s gotten the Oscars hosting gig three years in a row.

I’m happy for her. I just respected her so much as a comic and I wish she didn’t do it. She didn’t need to do it, IMO.

Please help me find this comedian/set. Like Gallagher, but not. HIMALAYAN > HODOWN > INDESCRETE

Maybe 30 years ago I watched a comedian do a set where he had flip boards with words on them (again, not Gallagher) and he would make a joke about each of the words, then he would combine the words one at a time to form new "phrases" and jokes. The only three words I remember in his set were HIMALAYAN > HODOWN > INDESCRETE making some joke that went like "Him a layin', a ho down, in the street".

Does anyone know who this guys was and is there a recording anywhere of the set? Thanks!
