Advice needed for a splitboarding noob on Mt Adams

My boyfriend and I are planning to climb Mt Adams and I’d like to get the best of both worlds and try splitboarding. It’s my first time climbing Adams but my boyfriend is no stranger and he anticipates using crampons. I have about 20 years experience snowboarding and have hiked into Tucks with microspikes, that’s about the extent of my experience boarding outside of resorts so any advice is appreciated. I have some mountaineering experience, boyfriend is an experienced mountaineer

I’m wondering if I should climb in my mid-stiff resort boots or bring my mountaineering boots along as well? Carrying both sounds awful but I’ve know people to regret climbing in their resort boots with crampons. I have TM2s and the boas loosen on resort days resulting in frequent tightening. I’m planning to rent equipment in Portland. Am I better off renting hard boots? I don’t have the funds to buy any new equipment at the moment so I come to you searching for enlightenment 🫶🏼

Also if anyone knows a spot to rent gear that’s closer to Mt Adams than Portland, please do tell!

Thank you

Edit: Alternatively, is it unwise for a beginner splitboarder to descend in mountaineering boots?

Nice couple of days in the Babine Mountains.

Last time I rode this couliour was around a decade ago, it's a long haul to get out there. This time there was a pretty solid sun crust, it was very grabby but I was just happy to be able to hold an edge this time.

Dry approaches in trail runners - how to pack the hardboots?

Coverage has been very low in the PNW this year and I've been curious about accessing some of the zones that require an extended hike up. I have the phantom slippers, and while they're comfy for touring, I'd prefer something lighter for extended dry approaches. Unlike my ski friends, I don't feel super comfortable putting the boards in A-frame and attaching the boots at only the toe. Is there another method for this?

Anyone tried splitboards.eu ?

As the title suggests, has anyone had experience with splitboards.eu ? Is it a trustworthy website?

They have a good deal on Union Chargers right now, but I'm being a little wary of the website. (Looking for my first pair of bindings!)

How do you manage long traversey exits

I’ve been living in Revelstoke this season and doing a bunch of touring out at Rogers Pass. Now that Spring has arrived I have been out on longer days. I’m happy skinning uphill or on the flat for long distances, however, I’m struggling with exits with rolling terrain that pass through trees. If anyone knows the area well, I’m talking specifically about the Illecillewaet lol.

The problem with this terrain is that it’s impossible (at least for me) to snowboard back to the trailhead because there are lots of little hills. I don’t have the opportunity to get my speed up enough between them and even using poles doesn’t help.

I’ve tried switching to ski mode with my Karakoram bindings with heel lockers. I feel completely out of control though. For context, I’ve never been a skier and I’m using fitwell freeride soft boots. I feel like I almost fell into creeks multiple times because I couldn’t hold my edges as I was traversing along the side of them.

The thing that has worked best for me has been going in ski mode with skins on and no heel lockers. I have mohair skins that glide well and the reduction in speed helps me stay in control a bit more. I still fell like 5 times last time I was out though and I’m conscious of being much slower than my skiing friends. They aren’t being assholes about it, it’s just annoying to me because I can always keep up in other situations and I have my transitions pretty dialled.

So do I just need to spend some time in the resort at the beginning of next season practicing my split skiing? Should I be practicing with heels locked or not? Or am I doomed to move to hard boots because this is the exact situation where soft boots can’t perform well?

Corn-posting from the heart.

Days like yesterday fill me with so much gratitude for splitboarding. Grateful to not be hamstrung by the boundaries, operating hours, and prices of a resort during a season that anyone in the West will agree was frustrating, and if you believe in climate change, sad. Grateful for the freedom that being foot powered in the mountains can offer. Grateful for the peace and the perspectives I have gained from a sport that from the outside kinda just looks like going “weeeee” down a mountain. Also there is nothing wrong with going “weeeee” down a mountain. I hope you all have had some magic days this season.

Plum Pekye crampon attachment problem

I needed crampons for the first time with my Pekyes yesterday. In a not comfortable position on a steep icy glacier slope I took out my Plum crampons and tried to "drop" them into the attachment. The other one would not fit and I had to use quite a bit of force to make it fit. Today I noticed that the other crampon attachment is broken. I'm quite sure this was not an issue of icing, so I doubt that the attachment had too narrow slot for the crampon shaft to fit.

Going to contact Plum soon, but thought to make a post to see if this is a known issue or a one-off.

Hardboots fatigue on descent, quads burning more than softboots?

Hey everyone,

I switched from softboots to hardboots about two seasons ago. On the uphill, I absolutely love it, way more efficient, especially on longer days.

But on the descent, I still feel like something’s off.

My quads burn way faster than they ever did in softboots. I narrowed my stance a bit this season and it helped slightly, but I still feel like I’m riding more “compressed”. Like my knees stay slightly bent in my Atomic Backland Pro, so my legs are always engaged.

In softboots, I feel like I could settle into a more neutral, relaxed stance and let the board do the work. I just don’t really get that same feeling in hardboots.

Would love to hear if anyone managed to get closer to that more relaxed/neutral feel, and what made the difference.

Cracked carbon board around spark puck (day four on new board)

Fourth day out on a brand new carbon board with Spark canted pucks, Dyno DH bindings with hard boots. I ride hard, am 6'3" and 190 lbs. Lots of impactful heel turns on firm snow but no wrecks. I'm a bit flummoxed about this.

It looks like the break started where the front heelside corner of the puck contacts the board on my front foot. Has anyone else heard of this happening?

Recommendations for spring split-camping

After doing some research and buying some new gear , the other day I went on my first multiday split camping trip. I was supposed to go out for 3 days but only managed 1 and had to turn back.

The first day had a 1600 meter ascent to camp ( managed around 1000 before turning back).

My main problem was the load I was carrying. I’ve bought a Mammut Trion 50 L which seems to fit the stuff nicely but really doesn’t seem to carry the weight well. Specially when having to A Frame with boots on skis when doing the first 2-3 hour hiking approximation.

It was an absolute nightmare. Skinning was better but still awful. But the approximation was truly pure suffering.

Straight away I realized there was no way a would be able to last several days. My shoulders were killing me and the chest strap really doesnt seem to do anything as its just a bungee cord.

I’ve done many 10+ day hiking trips so I’m used to carrying weight, just not painfully. I normally use an Exped Lighting 60 for hiking.

I guess my question is, is it a matter of using the right equiment? Are there packs with avy pockets that carry well for long aproximations and then become small when riding? Or is it just a painful thing to do and just have to be able to take it… (it was 0% fun)

I’ll be stoked to hear any advice for doing this kinda thing.

Cheers!

New Hardboot Binding designed by a fellow splitter

I'm a big fan of innovation so I have to give Corran props for trying something new out. I have no idea if this will work as well as he's hoping but it's a set of pretty cool ideas. Looks like delivery is planned for summer 2026, so not for this season.

A couple things about this binding which are interesting:

- No need to move any hardware around during transitions (faster, less faffing, no need to scrape some part of the board clear of snow)

- Board comes together straight on rather than sliding into place - potentially easier to keep clear of snow? I find clearing out the little nooks that the hooks slide into on my Hercules hooks rather annoying. I think I have to spend time on it almost every transition.

A couple downsides I see:

- Heavier swing weight while touring as binding is on the board the whole time. Phantom Split Cleats are listed at 291g for 4 (maybe it's for 2??), while KISS ride binding is 300 g for each foot. So, it seems you'd be adding 150g to each board (300g total) going from Phantom -> KISS while subtracting 960 g (M6 binding weight) from your bag.

- Dyneema cord getting stuck on things while touring. Seems bad.
