Dry approaches in trail runners - how to pack the hardboots?

Coverage has been very low in the PNW this year and I've been curious about accessing some of the zones that require an extended hike up. I have the phantom slippers, and while they're comfy for touring, I'd prefer something lighter for extended dry approaches. Unlike my ski friends, I don't feel super comfortable putting the boards in A-frame and attaching the boots at only the toe. Is there another method for this?
