Advice for someone who will spend the next 2 years at IIM shillong?

Hey folks this is gonna be a long post so bear w me. I would be moving to shillong soon for my mba and would be spending the next 2 years there. The last time i went there was prolly 14 years ago and it was wonderful. So anyways as someone new to the place would like help wrt the following ques-

  1. Any unwritten social rules outsiders should know? Or what pointers do u think someone moving in should keep in mind?
  2. Does blinkit zomato uber etc work?
  3. Whats the transport situation like? are there autos or buses ? this is purely for exploring the place.
  4. Now i get that iim is in the outskirts but any idea which mobile network actually works around iims?
  5. What gears are non-negotiable and where to buy it locally? Best places for warm clothes without tourist pricing? Also price estimates if possible.
  6. Areas to avoid at night as an outsider?
  7. Best clinic/hospital for non-emergency care?

any help is appreciated

Is the non religious/agnostic/ atheist demographic in Shillong growing?

I’ve always struggled more with organized and institutionalized religion than with the idea of spirituality or God itself. I do believe in God, just not the “God of the gaps” version that is often preached by everyone. I don’t hate religious people, and I’m not trying to mock anyone’s beliefs. I just personally find it hard to connect with systems that often divide people, judge others, or turn morality into rules and hierarchy.

I also feel like some things in this universe are simply not meant to be fully known or understood by us, and that’s okay. But many religious people speak with absolute certainty about everything, from how the universe works to what happens after death, as if every mystery already has a fixed answer. For me, uncertainty and questioning feel more honest than pretending we know it all. And no, being non religious or questioning religion does not automatically make someone evil, immoral, or some kind of satanist like people often assume.

What’s interesting to me is that some of the kindest, most genuine, and selfless people I’ve met in life have actually been non religious, agnostic, or atheist. People who helped others simply because they wanted to, not because of fear, reward, or doctrine.

So I’m curious, how many people here identify as agnostic, atheist, spiritual but not religious, or completely non religious? And do you think this demographic is slowly growing in Shillong as well? How has it shaped the way you see morality, kindness, and human connection?

Planning to move to Shillong for work - need guidance from locals

Hi everyone, I may be moving to Shillong soon for work and wanted to understand a few practical things before relocating. I’m from North India and have never lived in the Northeast before, so I would really appreciate some local advice.

What are the important things I should know before moving to Shillong?

A few specific things I wanted to ask:

  • What type of clothes should I carry throughout the year? Do I need heavy winter wear or just light jackets?

  • How’s the weather across different months?

  • Any tips regarding rain/humidity and daily essentials?

  • Approx monthly living expenses for a single person including rent?

Also open to any general advice, dos & don’ts, or things you wish you knew before moving to Shillong.

Any advice/suggestion/guidance is highly appreciated.

Thanks in advance!

I was drunk last night and I had a thought, this city would be tough to survive for theistic satanists.

There's just no open spaces no forests to offer sacrifices and rituals to our Lord Satan. Where will we hold the unholy black masses and gatherings and what about the parties with dead metal music.

The only positive I see is that there're plenty of drug addicts, alcoholics crooks and ofcourse the Jesus freaks around every nook and corner disturbing the peace of Shillong and are perfect and ripe to be offered as blessings

To belong or not to belong

As a third generation Bengali from Shillong, I grew up with an ethnic identity crisis which got further amplified when I stepped out of my homestate. I was too northeastern for mainlanders and racist remarks were thrown at me in jest. And back home, I was a dkhar and part of a community that is often seen as an invasive species, plotting to outpopulate the indigenous people of the state.

Yes, those fears are not unfounded. But still, a lot of you would agree that under the guise of protecting Khasi culture goons are given a free hand to vandalize. Such incidents make me feel like I don't belong anywhere which is a pretty frightening thought to have. Just to be clear, I am not using stray incidents to paint an entire community with the same brush. I will always be indebted to my Khasi teachers, friends & mentors for their love and kindness. Without them, I wouldn't be where I am today.

But, at the same time, the normalisation of xenophobia often makes me question whether I can call the city I grew up in my home lest someone comments that I don't belong.

If you choose to comment, please be civil and kind. :)

The Shillong Times on Instagram: "Once known as the education hub of the Northeast, Meghalaya is now facing a sharp decline in its educational standards despite having one of the highest numbers of schools and teachers in the region and the country. Meghalaya has the highest dropout rates, abysmall

Jehovah Witness Shillong

Who are these white foreigners going door to door talking about the Bible and the end times? I asked which denomination they belong to, and they said they are Jehovah’s Witnesses. I looked them up online, and many people seem to consider them a cult. It also appears they have a group here in Shillong.

I (24 F) was driving my bike today and i overtake this auto since it was moving quite slow. All of a sudden I hear blaring horns and bro was driving so fast and overtake me and was staring angrily. Is it ego or am I just being sensitive ?

Is it because I am a girl or does this happens to anyone else as well?

I recently got my 12th marks and I'm planning to study my bachelors in shillong.

I have three colleges in mind namely st edmund's, st Anthony's and shillong college(open to rec)

I went through the syllabus and comp sci seem to be the same (except maybe a lil diff in edmund though I couldn't get detailed one for it)

I would love to know which one of the course is better at each of these colleges

Would appreciate it if you could help me

I was accepted as provisional admission in the college and they required me to pay the admission fees within 24 hrs, however since there were no way to pay for the admission fees I called the college and the first guy told me to wait for a call(never got it) the second and the third person seemed very confused about it and both of them told me to pay the semester fees(they both Said there were admission fee but when I asked where to pay they end up saying just pay the semester fee). This college is not my first choice so I don't wanna Pay the semester fees but if I don't I might lose my seat. What do I do?

Another post here : https://www.reddit.com/r/Shillong/s/ZJj8eBFbNj

Edit: Nvm I got to know the semester fee IS the admission fee, thanks for all your help!

Hi everyone! I’m moving to Shillong for work purpose and most likely to stay for a year. I have a few quick questions for the locals:

  1. PG Costs: What is a realistic monthly rent for a clean, single-room girls' PG in Mawlai?
  2. The Commute: How easy is it to get shared taxis or buses from Mawlai to Umiam for a 9-to-5 shift? What’s the daily travel cost?
  3. Fitness: Are there any affordable gyms or safe open spaces for morning runs nearby?

Any specific PG leads or general survival tips would be hugely appreciated! Thanks in advance!
