My Galaxy S24 exploded in my hand during normal use (not charging)

This happened in South Korea on May 11, 2026.

My Galaxy S24 suddenly emitted smoke, extreme heat, and exploded in my hand while I was using it normally to search the internet.

Important details:

The phone was NOT charging

No drop damage

Never repaired or opened

Fire department responded

Signs consistent with lithium battery ignition were identified on site

I am currently receiving medical treatment for smoke inhalation symptoms and anxiety/insomnia after the incident

Samsung told me they would collect the device for internal investigation, but I have not received further explanation yet.

Photos, medical records, and incident evidence have been preserved.

For privacy and safety reasons, I would prefer to remain anonymous publicly.

If media outlets are interested, I am willing to provide additional photos and videos.

UPDATE1: 26.5.13

Thank you for all the concern, advice, and support.

This incident did actually happen, and many of my coworkers witnessed it as well. I also have video footage related to the incident, and I have already informed outlets such as BBC and CNN that I am willing to provide additional evidence if requested.

At the moment, I have not been contacted by any Korean media outlets.

I was actively using the phone in my hand for normal web searching when it suddenly began swelling very rapidly before exploding. Thankfully, the lower part of the phone split open during the incident, which likely reduced the severity of the injuries. I only suffered minor burn blisters instead of more serious physical harm.

(Additional Information) The device was purchased as an official unlocked Galaxy S24 through Samsung Partners in South Korea on June 11, 2024, and was received and activated on June 12, 2024. Since then, it had been used normally without any repairs, modifications, or internal opening.

I originally switched from Apple iPhones to Samsung years ago, and honestly, this experience — along with the response afterward — has changed the way I feel.

Please stay careful and safe with your devices as well.

I will continue updating this post if there are any major developments or investigation results.

UPDATE2: 26.05.13

I was just contacted by the director of a local Samsung service center. According to what I was told, employees from Samsung headquarters became aware of this Reddit post and instructed the local service center to respond. I am still recording and preserving all communication related to this incident, and if major media outlets request it, I am prepared to provide those records as well. I once again requested direct communication from the appropriate department at Samsung headquarters. To be clear, I have never demanded financial compensation during this process. What I truly want is for Samsung to recognize the seriousness of this incident and respond with transparency and sincerity. Experiencing something like this has honestly changed the way I think about battery fire situations and consumer safety. I hope companies learn to take these incidents seriously before they become larger public safety issues.

I’ve honestly realized how powerful Reddit can be.

Thank you everyone. The support and attention from people here have genuinely helped someone like me feel less alone while dealing with this situation.

If more people become aware of battery safety risks through this post, I think that alone would already mean a lot to me.

And seriously, for everyone reading this on their phones right now — please stay safe and pay attention to unusual heat or warning signs 😅

"Update: Samsung promised a free repair after my post went viral, but they sent it back with a damaged screen! lol (DOCOMO/Samsung Japan Fail)"

Remember me? The guy with the DOCOMO Shop Funabashi repair disaster that went viral.

After my previous post started getting traction (thanks for the support, guys!), I finally got an email from Samsung Japan. They apologized and promised a free repair at their official center to fix the mess made by the Funabashi store.

I thought, "Great, finally some accountability!" I was wrong. lol

The "Repaired" Result (Look at 1000013897.jpg):

My Galaxy S25 just came back from the Samsung repair center today. I opened the box, and the first thing I saw was a scratch/defect right on the display (see 1000013897.jpg).

This screen was perfect when I sent it in. They were supposed to fix the previous "repair mistake," but instead, they just added more damage. Is this what Samsung calls "Official Service" in 2026? lol

The Ridiculous Part:

They even threw in a stainless steel mug again.

Samsung's Logic: "We scratched your screen (again), but hey, here's a cup! Please don't be mad!"

My Reality: I now have a damaged flagship and a collection of unwanted mugs.

I am absolutely done with Samsung Japan and DOCOMO. They talk big in emails when they’re afraid of bad PR, but their actual technicians clearly don't give a damn about the devices.

Watch out if you're dealing with DOCOMO Shop Funabashi or the official Samsung repair centers in Japan. They are apparently incapable of returning a phone without breaking something else.

Edit: yes I know this is a hardware defect, but will scamsung accept it's their fault? Since device is out of warranty

Why Does Samsung Sell 15 Different Versions of the Same Phone?

You buy a $1500+ Ultra phone thinking you’re getting Samsung’s peak human achievement, then you discover the experience depends on which patch of Earth you happened to spawn in.

One reviewer in California:

“Insane battery life bro, smoothest Android ever.”

Meanwhile your unit in another region is fighting for its life at 6PM because your CSC came bundled with 14 mystery services, 3 app stores, carrier glue, analytics packets heading toward orbit, and enough background processes to run a small civilization. Same phone, by the way. Same Snapdragon. Same marketing. Completely different vibes.

Samsung fans will act like this is normal. Brother, if I spend flagship money, I should not need a PhD. in firmware archaeology to know whether my phone came with the “good OLED” or the “slightly grainy green-tinted night mode special edition. On the s24ultra example”

People always say “every company does regional differences.” Yeah, no shit. But Samsung takes it to MMORPG class-selection levels. Buying an S Ultra sometimes feels like opening a loot crate:

Legendary pull: amazing battery, clean panel, stable modem

Rare pull: decent battery but weird standby drain

Common pull: your phone wakes up at 3AM to communicate with seventeen Samsung subsidiaries and a refrigerator in Uzbekistan

The funniest part is that reviewers almost never mention firmware regions. They review the heavenly reviewer build connected to pristine Wi-Fi in a $4 million house while your actual phone is stress testing the modem in a concrete building fighting old signal towers.

Samsung hardware is incredible. That’s what makes this more annoying. The company clearly CAN make a near-perfect experience. They just keep shipping 19 slightly different realities of the same phone depending on region, carrier, and whatever corporate pact was signed under a blood moon.

An Ultra should feel ultra everywhere.

And dont even get me started on the fact that they optimise onui for the latest ultra. So yours feel like an A series phone in about 2 years sometimes even less

Some people get good battery, some get dog shit some get meh.

Even if apple sucks at least their phones suck the same around the globe,

Not even 3 years. I bought this July 2023.

Dropped it only maybe once or twice. I baby'd this thing like crazy and now this??

Idk what kind of magic samsung is doing.

Even with just normally using the device never gaming even temperatures just at 32-33C didn't fall much it did but at just at knee height it's even well protected even never did software up sticked on 6.1 yet greenline will still greet you nevertheless. Pulled the trigger and got the latest model the device is lighter though IMO 23u got more premium feel and i like the boxy design more(ex lumia and Xperia user).

I updated to the latest security version (April) 2 days ago and I'm having overheating problems with the device. I don't know if it's the update or what, but the behavior hasn't changed at all; it even happens while charging. Right now I feel like the camera is taking less sharp photos than before, and the video is now lagging slightly (Barely noticeable). Is anyone else having the same problem?

I'm worried it will have the same problem as the S23 and S24, which have many issues of this type after only 3 years. If so, I'd like to sell it before it becomes more common

Exactly what the title says, since I've updated my phone to April security patch 3 days ago it started to lag when interacting with the ui, swiping through the home screen and on apps like Instagram, chrome and mainly TikTok. Also making I've been needing to charge it 2 times a day on a phone with less than 3 months of use. I didn't install any new apps after updating until now or uninstalling, and I've been using it the same as I always did.

edit: has anyone noticed that too after updating?

I’m posting this out of frustration after dealing with an ongoing issue on my Samsung Galaxy S23+, and to see if anyone else has experienced something similar.

My phone is not recognized by any PC via USB-C. It doesn’t show up for file transfer or in any other mode. At the same time, it charges normally and correctly detects USB drives and even other phones, so the port is clearly not “dead” in the usual sense.

I’ve spent a lot of time trying to isolate the problem and rule out every obvious cause. I tested multiple USB-C cables, different PCs, and different USB ports, with no success. Following Samsung’s own recommendations, I even had the entire USB-C port replaced, paying for the repair myself, and nothing changed. The issue remained exactly the same.

I then performed a full factory reset. That alone turned into another inconvenience, because I couldn’t back up my data using a PC with ****, since the phone is not detected at all. I had to go out of my way and buy a USB flash drive just to back up my data and proceed with the reset. Again, after all that effort, absolutely no improvement.

What’s even more frustrating is the way Samsung support has handled this. Every response feels like a copy-paste of basic troubleshooting steps I’ve already done multiple times. There is no real technical analysis, no escalation, no accountability. On top of that, their responses have become slower and slower over time, making the whole experience feel even more dismissive and unprofessional.

An authorized service center told me the only remaining option would be replacing the motherboard, but they also clearly said it’s rarely the cause of this kind of issue and they cannot guarantee it would fix anything. In other words, I’m expected to spend even more money with a high chance of getting nothing in return.

So at this point I’m left with a premium device that cannot perform a basic function like connecting to a PC, after already spending money on a useless repair and extra tools just to work around the problem. The lack of a clear diagnosis and the way Samsung keeps handling this situation makes it hard to take their support seriously.

Has anyone experienced something similar with the S23+ or other Galaxy devices? Could this be firmware-related or some kind of low-level driver issue on the phone itself? Are there any advanced fixes that are not part of the usual generic support script?

Any insight would be appreciated.
