Young queer couple considering move to Santa Fe

My wife (31) and I (34f) have recently started considering Santa Fe as a destination to move to. We currently live in DC, and are looking to move west to be closer to family. We are also looking at LA, San Diego, and Denver.) Some of the things we are looking for in our next home include:

- job opportunities in sports/ government

- queer spaces and community (specifically other young queer families)

- good maternal healthcare that is queer friendly

- thriving local community

- decent public schools

- access to nature

- affordability (relative to DC)

- food and bar scene

I’ve done some research, but it’s hard to totally get the pulse. I know Sante Fe is a great little touristy town but trying to understand what it is like to live there and to live there as a younger queer person. What do you think anyone considering a move to Santa Fe should know?

Thanks in advance for any insight!

Agaves for sale on roadside - any luck with them?

I've been tempted to buy a couple of agaves from the guys who sell them by the roadside at 599 & Camino La Tierra. Has anyone bought agaves from that vendor? And, what kind of luck did you have with them after planting them. I've heard different versions of how long they survive after being transplanted.

Hiking groups in Santa Fe

I did a search and it looks like the last time someone asked was a year ago so I’m going to ask now. I am moving to Santa Fe next week and am looking for a hiking group, I am a 57 year old male. I am an experienced hiker, I can easily do six miles in the humid Tennessee summer. Some weeks I will bring my dog, wanting a dog friendly group. Thank you!

Santa Fe Farmer’s Market Worth it?

I was planning to visit the Santa Fe Farmers’ Market this Saturday while I’m in town, but I’m wondering if it’s worth going if I’m not really looking to buy produce. Are there other types of items for sale, or is it mostly food?

Resources for unhoused individuals?

Hi all. Does anyone have good options for helping out unhoused people they run into in Santa Fe? Centers to direct them to, safe areas, etc… I met a woman outside the grocery store who was in a pretty dire situation and it breaks my heart. Obviously giving money is the easiest option, which I do, but it feels incredibly short-term effective. What are better resources to provide? I’m new-ish to the area and don’t have a grasp on the nonprofit networks or anything.

Can anyone recommend a good dentist?

I have quite a few dental issues, and I need a new dentist. The current office screwed something up, and I need a new dentist. It's a such a small town. Sometimes the schedulers at different dentists know each other and talk...Thanks for any referral info.

Santa Fe Antique Mall worth the trip?

Me again! You all have been so incredibly helpful in answering my other questions. I have one more for you. 😊

I wanted to go to the Santa Fe Antique Mall located at Marquez Plaza. I’m looking for vintage turquoise jewelry and a concho belt. Should I go or skip it?

Thanks for any suggestions.

Attention PNM Ratepayers

Blackstone is attempting to acquire TXNM (PNMs parent company) which would mean privation of our grid. Blackstone has offered a rate credit of $3.51 per customer, but if Blackstone builds their data centers on our land how will this credit help with raising rates? PNM Should be publicly owned and funded join our protest on the 30th at PNM headquarters (414 Silver Ave SW #4, Albuquerque, NM 87102) to make our opinion heard!

Blowing a kiss to The City Different

Santa Fe has a way of attracting people who are slightly out of focus with the rest of the world. That quality made its way into my first novel, The Focus Puller. A good chunk of it takes place there — eccentric seniors on a bus stop bench, a dream interpreter in tie-dye, a Kickapoo veteran with an Area 51 story, and Rio Zapata wandering through it all on a long strange trip he doesn't quite understand yet. Just published it. Felt like the right place to mention it.

More about Sheba, 500+ days into her residency at Santa Fe Animal Shelter, featuring foster notes and photos from over the years

To start with some good news, senior shelter longtimers Chevy and Soldat, the blind shepherd, have been adopted! We're hoping the community can keep our wins coming.

Sheba, at nearly 4 years-old, is now the longest term resident of Santa Fe Animal Shelter. I cannot stress the resiliency this kind of stay requires, especially for a dog as intelligent and people-loving as Sheba. Like most young, smart, social longtimers, Sheba often doesn't "present well" in the kennel - she's in there alone 23 hours a day and wants to maximize her time out!

This December, Sheba spent several weeks in foster care, where she absolutely thrived. Her foster noted that Sheba was inquisitive, but not destructive, flawlessly house-trained, took very well to crate training, and was fine alone in the house for long stretches. Sheba showed nice manners greeting visitors - she really does love people - and met a few dogs without issue. In fact, during a morning walk Sheba was approached by an off-leash dog and handled this surprise beautifully!

Sheba's many volunteer friends can also sing her praises: for all her exuberance, Sheba gives the sweetest snuggles and dainty kisses, has a singular sense of humor (I swear she can wink), is game for any adventure, plus she's gorgeous! those velvety triangle ears melt me every time.

You might hear dogs like Sheba referred to as "high-energy" - she does have a big brain and can sometimes use it for mischief, like escaping a yard to chase deer (this got her returned by adopters). In her foster home, Sheba was increasingly mellow as the decompression wore off - I've seen many so-called high energy dogs become couch potatoes when they're away from shelter stress. Newly adopted dogs generally shouldn't be off-leash and unattended, even in a yard, during their adjustment periods, and a wily girl like Sheba may always need secure fencing (Santa Fe's pet recovery expert, Michelle Lord, is a big fan of coyote rollers - cheap and easy to install!)

To adopt Sheba, give her another foster break, or just learn more, call or visit Santa Fe Animal Shelter 7 days a week. Reminder that the warm weather means local shelter and rescue populations will soon be sky high - it's a great time to become a volunteer!

Photos are from Sheba's time in foster and 1.5 years of HAT outings (volunteers reading, Sheba would also love another one of those!)

Dental Hygienist Recommendations?

I saw a post for dentists and I realized I need a cleaning. But I don't want to be a "new patient," I don't want X-rays, I won't do the weird new iphone photo thingy they try to use.

Does anyone know a good dental hygienist who can do a good cleaning in or around Santa Fe? Price not an issue. TY

Anyone with experience hiking between Atalaya and Sierra Pelada?

I live near end of Old Santa Fe Trail, and hike a lot up top of Forest Road 79. Shaggy Peak and Mt Thompson are to the East. The forest road descends to a meadow at the base of Sierra Pelada and there's a trail which goes all the way to Atalaya. I see the main trail to Sierra Pelada, but you have to go almost. 1/3 the way to Atalaya to get to the trail, which then back tracks East. My question is, it's not clear, at the base of Sierra Pelada, which is close to the forest Rd, how to get to the top, aside from bushwhacking with a compass. I tried it once and got lost, disoriented by the endless arroyos. thx for any info.

Apartment Recommendations

Hello everyone! I am moving to Santa Fe in the upcoming months and wanted to hear what y’all might recommend for a good apartment. My budget is 17-2000 monthly.

I’ve looked into Casa Ciena and it is my first choice.

I’ve looked at Olympus De Santa Fe and the place itself looks nice.

And I’ve also looked at Solwyn but just wasn’t to interested.
