1982 Padres (81-81)

Not a lot to write home about in the 1982 Topps Padre set. You get a final Ozzie card, a Future Stars card of non-future stars, and a Padres Leaders cards with Luis Salazar (.308 avg) and Juan Eichelberger (3.51 era).

A couple bonus Fleer/Donruss included. My favorite being the Ozzie Diamond King.

Also not much to write home about for the Padres in 1982 except for the debut of Tony Gwynn on July 19, 1982. He went 2-4 with an RBI and run scored.

Tim Loller had a good season in the mound going 16-9 with 150Ks

Notable for future Padres teams Ozzie was traded to St. Louis for Gary Templeton. Also Benito Santiago was signed as an amateur free agent in 1982.

Ruppert Jones was an All-Star Game reserve for the Padres. He did mange to hit a triple in the game. He was hitting .312 with 11 hrs at the all-star break, but would hit only 1 more HR the rest of the season and finished hitting .283.

Why would there be a "C" on Adrian's jersey?

Saw this on ebay and am fairly interested, but can't figure out why there would be a "C" on one of his jerseys. Baseball doesn't have team captains as far as I know and that's the only thing I can possibly think of.

Let me know if you guys have any other ideas.

Padres For Sale

Merrill /5 Auto/Relic

Mayfield Auto

Gwynn Gold Mini

Gwynn Relic

King Sepia

Tatis Crusade

Kim Gold /2023

FS $250 + whatever shipping/insurance we agree on

The /10 of the Merrill alone sold on eBay for $270 so getting the /5 cheaper than that along with the others is a good deal I think and I would be glad it went to a fan

Thanks!

1981 Padres (41-69)

1981 gives you your last Randy Jones, Rollie Fingers, Dave Winfield and Ozzie (82 Fleer and 82 Donruss still included Ozzie).

81 Topps you get the Ozzie Record Breaker card for his SS assist record in 1980. The usual team card and future stars. Also shown is a Topps scratch off card with Ozzie. I think the Ozzie card is my favorite.

81 also introduces Fleer and Donruss cards. So we will start to see some of other random stuff I collected over years. But not necessarily full sets like Topps.

I like the 81 Fleer design but most of the photo quality looks like they had Vaseline over the camera lens. The Star Stickers were fun to get something different form the other manufacturer than Topps standard cards.

Probably most notable in 1981 is the Padres drafting Tony Gwynn. John Kruk was also drafted by the Padres in 81.

In 81 Ozzie won a gold glove, tied for the league lead in games played (110), and lead the league in at-bats (450).

Ozzie and Terry Kennedy were both All-Star reserves

Collecting Advice

So, I’m starting a new collection, but I’m tossed on how to organize it.

Do I collect the first appearance of a player in a Padres uniform, or collect the whole year’s worth of roster players, even if, say Casty is still in his Phillies jersey on the card, just as an example. Or like last year when Sheets’s early cards for 2025 were White Sox.

I know the later cards in the year will have them in the Pads unis, but that doesn’t always work for everyone.

So if a player never gets a Padres card, do I still add him to the collection in whatever uni he was in when he joined the Pads? Or just leave it pure Pads cards?

I know it’s a personal decision. But what would you do?

Buy the card not the grade

1982 Tony Gwynn pacific coast league Hawaii Islanders card. Been looking for a copy for a while but most copies have been out of my price range. This one popped up, lower grade but who cares, I’m excited to add it to my Tony Gwynn collection!

New rookie autos for the padres collection

Picked up some new rookie autos for the collection, I really want an orange Bryce Johnson but current prices are higher than I want to pay so I settled for a gold. I’m big on jersey color match autos and I try to get one for all the padres players.
