Are Southern Lights viewable approaching BNE overnight?

Are Southern Lights viewable approaching BNE overnight?

I will be flying QF16, departing LAX at 10pm and arriving Brisbane (BNE) around 5am. Per Google, it will be mostly nighttime outside for most of the flight. I know the odds of there being a strong aurora are a variable but we are coming into the time of year that makes it more of a possibility. I wonder...... IF there were a strong aurora, would someone in a window seat on the south-facing side of the plane potentially get an amazing view?

QF16 LAX to BNE seat selection

I usually book a window seat so I can lean and sleep without anyone ever climbing over me. Hubby gets the aisle seat. For this overnight 14 hr flight LAX to BNE, hubby talked me into taking the 51C and 51D seats, across the aisle from each other. I do wear good compression socks but I will still need to get up regularly to walk, or I'll have leg cramps.

Now, with 4 more days left, the seat map shows that no one has taken the window and middle (51A and B) next to me. I really would be more comfortable not on the aisle getting bumped by the cart or by people passing by.

I'm debating whether I should move from the D aisle seat to the A window seat. I really prefer it for sleeping. ***What is the likelihood that this flight will fill up completely so I end up with a stranger between us?

Rude flight attendant

I flew from Brisbane to Melbourne yesterday and was surprised by the rudeness of one of the flight attendants.

It’s not so much what she was saying but the words she used and how she said it.

During meal service they were serving chicken and leek pies. I asked what was the vegetarian option. She replied in a forceful way “there is no option. You are either vegetarian or you’re not!”

After seeing my stunned reaction she then softened her tone and leaned closer and said they have to save the vegetarian meals for people for vegetarians as they usually don’t have enough of them. - this should have been what she said first!

She didn’t even ask if I WAS vegetarian.

I said that’s fine I will take the chicken pie. They moved one row down and her colleague who I don’t think heard this conversation, said they were running out of pies but that’s ok as they had plenty of food, everyone will have to just have the vegetarian quiche.

I heard her say “oh that lady wanted the vegetarian one I should have given it to her!” By this stage I had opened my pie so too late.

When they were collecting rubbish she berated the passenger in the tow in front of me for putting rubbish into the empty water bottle. She rudely said “now that you have put that in there we can’t recycle it” and then just kept staring at him like a reprimand. She then said “I will try and get it out but maybe you can remember this next time!” The passenger just looked at her stunned.

On both occasions she was right in what she was saying but how she said it and the tone and words she uses are not acceptable.

She obviously didn’t score well in customer relations and communication in her training.

Made to walk through broken glass

This isn’t really something I wanted to ever post or share, however since being ghosted by the Qantas customer service team, I’m reaching out here just to share my story.

In late March my mother and I flew Brisbane to Tokyo (Narita), treating ourselves to business class as it was my mother’s 70th birthday. It was my mum’s first time in business class and she was understandably excited.

On the flight to Tokyo, no major issues for myself (except for my screen malfunctioning for 30 minutes); however my mum was unable to eat on the flight due to her pre-disclosed allergies and intolerances not being accommodated. By the time they asked her for which food she wanted to order, mum was told it was “not available, but we can go back and find something in economy and put it on a nice plate for you.”

What they salvaged, my mum was not able to eat. What she did pick at eventually caused her to have an upset stomach for the first day of our time in Japan.

Upon the flight’s descent to Tokyo, the crew failed to complete checks for passengers who had empty glasses or unfinished drinks. And predictably so, a glass half partially filled with water flew and smashed in the aisle.

Nothing was cleaned up, and when exiting the plane we were asked to “be careful of the glass”, and were made to walk through it in order to exit.

Admittedly, this already was shit enough. But willing to forgive and forget— until our return flight back to Brisbane.

While we were in to business lounge waiting, we were approached by a staff member who alerted us to a mechanical fault in my mothers chair. They said the massage function wasn’t working, and the chair had “limited movement”. Considering my mum’s age, and that this was an overnight flight, I asked if it was okay if I switched with her. I mean, surely the seat wasn’t that bad.

We boarded the plane, I took mum’s seat (with approval). Took off and— again had zero food available to mum. This time out of fear of getting ill again, she didn’t accept any of the substituted food. The food option that I wanted was also not available, so I settled for the substitute food from economy that was fine.

Mum was able to sleep, rest and use the functions of her chair… however the “limited movement” and issues with my chair were much more than just no massage function. My chair did not recline, at all. The leg rest did not go up, at all. It had no function at all.

Further more, aparently I am doomed to never have a functioning TV. My monitor “had a glitch” which required 3 manual reboots, and over 2 hours of staring at a blank screen, or being micromanaged by flight crew who were admittedly trying their best to fix malfunctioning equipment.

Now, business class is a privilege. And this is something my mum and I cannot usually afford, but after my dad passed away, we treated ourselves for mum’s birthday. This was supposed to be special. Even with that emotional element removed, I can’t help but think how it’s an acceptable experience for people who paid full price to fly business class on Australia’s “premium” airline.

Across two business class flights we encountered; a broken chair, two malfunctioning tv monitors, were not provided 3 out of 4 requested meals and made to walk through broken glass. I feel even in economy this is completely unacceptable, yet somehow this was okay in business class?

I reached out to Qantas customer service and received a reply apologizing for the experience, and said they would give mum and I 20,000 frequent flyer points as an apology. This felt like a slap in the face. So I replied saying that I wasn’t asking for a refund, or for money— I wanted answers as to how this happened, and how they think that is an appropriate response following what happpened.

I was then told (1.5 weeks ago), that they would do “an internal investigation” and keep me updated. After a week of no updates, I reached out on Monday this week seeing if they needed anything from me; photos, videos, etc. No reply. I asked if there was any updates on their investigation. No reply.

So now, I am sharing my story here.

I will post a comment with the photo of broken glass that we were made to walk through, because that is the clearest and probably most unbelievable aspect of this. I’ll also include a photo of one of the malfunctioning screens.

I am curious. Have any of you encountered any of this before? What did you do, and what happened?

And how the fuck can Qantas get away with this?

Extra baggage cost unclear

Hey there.

I've got a flight from Tokyo to Melbourne through Qantas in a few weeks. I want to add an additional piece of baggage (likely around 23 kg), but Qantas doesn't let me do it through its website because I bought the ticket through Booking.

When I asked the Booking chat rep to do so, they said they can offer me either 15 kg or 25 kg as options for that baggage. The costs? 300 USD for the 15 kg option and 500 USD for the 25 kg.

Isn't it too much? Would it be better to try my luck with the Qantas counter at the airport? (though I suspect it would be even more expensive if I do it there?) Do you think there is something else I could do?

Thanks.

Is Qantas domestic business class still worth it or is economy plus the better value now?

On shorter routes especially, the difference between business and economy plus doesn’t feel that big anymore. Lounge access is nice, but once you’re on board it sometimes feels like you’re just paying a lot more for a bit extra space and a slightly better meal

What’s your favourite section in J on the 787?

Missus and I are going to Rome in July in Business on the Dreamliner. I’ve flown a few times in the larger Business cabin and never in the smaller cabin (with 3 rows).

Which section do you prefer? The larger or smaller cabin? I’m already aware that bulkhead rows have more space and that seats alternate between being more private and closer to the aisle.

Seat selection for flight from Sydney to New York

Friends, I’ve booked 3 tickets for flights from Sydney to New York and back through a travel agent. The itinerary includes flights with Qantas and American Airlines. When we asked about selecting seats, they said they’re unable to select the seat ( they are not allowed to do it). They want us to wait until check in open.

We’re travelling with a 4-year-old, so we’d really prefer to arrange seating in advance if possible. Is there any way to book seats before check-in in this situation? Has anyone experienced something similar?

Qantas Biohazard Incident (The Finale) ✈️

Appreciate everyone who shared advice and support on my original post — it made a real difference navigating this. I also want to acknowledge the role of the media in bringing visibility to the situation. Given some conflicting reports, I thought it would be helpful to clarify where things ultimately landed.

I proceeded with filing a claim through the New Zealand Disputes Tribunal, and following a recent hearing, the parties conferred and resolved the matter by settlement.

The core issue for me was never just the cost — it was accountability. In particular, ensuring that large corporations are held to the same consumer standards the rest of us are expected to meet — especially where safety critical aspects of passenger management is concerned.

To close the loop, I’ve personally donated the excess beyond my direct losses to the Royal Melbourne Hospital.

More broadly, I’m hopeful the upcoming Aviation Consumer Ombuds Scheme in Australia will provide a clearer and more accessible pathway for others who find themselves in similar situations.

Thanks r/australian !

Superannuation

Going to be starting employment with Qantas shortly, I've been asked weather to join their own Superannuation or to continue with my existing fund which is with AustralianSuper. Any advice?

Can I fly with open wounds?

I have a few open wounds – hypodermis layer cuts – is it possible that Qantas would not allow me to get on my flight with them? Even if I have them dressed and covered properly?

Brisbane Domestic - International Transfer time

Hi all,

I have an international flight departing BNE at 0900 hours on a Thursday. I originally was going to try fly to Brisbane (from SYD) the night before to be safe... but now I'm looking at flying SYD - BNE on the 0600 flight that same morning.

Noting, the flight pattern of SYD - BNE - final destination is available as a stand alone booking on the Qantas website. So Qantas obviously thinks that it's enough transfer time.

I've rung Qantas and to book the flight separately is far, far cheaper as opposed to change it onto one ticket. They have indicated that the check in desk should be able to check my bags through from SYD - final destination.

I'm just hoping someone with some experience at BNE airport may be able to shed light as to if 1.5 hours is enough time for me to deplane, change terminals, get through immigration & board? I'm travelling solo so no kids or anything to tow along.

Thanks in advanced :)
