STATE OF ISRAEL IS BORN (May 16, 1948 | © The Palestine Post)

As “Medinat Yisrael” (State of Israel) was proclaimed, the battle for Jerusalem raged, with most of the city falling to the Jews. At the same time, President Truman announced that the United States would accord recognition to the new State. A few hours later, Palestine was invaded by Moslem armies from the south, east and north, and Tel Aviv was raided from the air. On Friday the United Nations General Assembly adjourned after adopting a resolution to appoint a mediator but without taking any action on the Partition Resolution of November 29.

JEWISH SOCIALISTS FOR FREE PALESTINE (July 23, 1917 | © The New York Times)

The text of their resolution, in which they adopt for the first time a nationalistic point of view, is as follows:

"We, the Poale Zion, who are refugee Palestinians in Egypt, beg you to communicate with our Socialistic companions in America and Russia, putting the following appeal before them:

"Considering that we find ourselves at an epoch of history in which it is our duty to put events to the best possible purpose, and considering that the allied powers have openly claimed that they are fighting for the liberation of small nationalities, and considering that the advance of the British armies toward Palestine signifies for us and for our country the inauguration of an era of independence and liberty and justice, we address you, comrades, with the appeal to redouble your vigilance in proclaiming among all of those who take part in the International Socialistic Conference that for safeguarding the interests of the Jewish masses of Palestine, oppressed in the home of its ancestors by the Turkish regime, they should with all their forces oppose any resolution having the effect of putting in question the liberation of Palestine by the allied armies."

Old Wichita newspapers

I have some 1940s, 1950s, and a 1960s wichita newspapers from the Eagle and the Beacon. I am moving soon and was thinking about getting rid of them. Would there be any historical, newspaper or library organizations in Wichita that may be interested in these?

ARABS IN MESOPOTAMIA HUMAN HYENAS WHO ARE NOT TRUSTED BY TURKISH ALLIES (April 16, 1916 | © The Washington Post)

In the Mesopotamian campaign above all others is cavalry essential, for the Arabs make a kind of irregular arm for the Turk. They are always hovering over the British flanks ready to take advantage of any accident or confusion by the way. They follow like shadows. If a wagon has to be abandoned, the Arabs are down on it before the rear guard has passed on 800 yards. After this the horde usually closes in, emboldened by the loot.

War Criminals (October 21, 1944 | © The Australasian)

HADJ AMIN AL-HUSSEINI

HADJ AMIN AL-HUSSEINI, that crafty, perjured old man, once Grand Mufti of Jerusalem, is another who came close to evil eminence, for had his plans not gone awry he might have made himself Fuhrer of the Arab world. Thug, saint, swindler, racketeer, killer and fanatic, he has no parallel even in the Rogues’ Gallery of the Axis. For 15 years he gave all Palestine a blood bath, murdering and pillaging with a ferocity that did not spare women and children, yet until the very last he enjoyed the trust of those he butchered and betrayed.

Trusting Khomeini (February 16, 1979 | © The New York Times)

President Carter and Zbigniew Brzezinski have until very recently associated him with religious fanaticism. The news media have defamed him in many ways, associating him with efforts to turn the clock back 1,300 years, with virulent anti-Semitism, and with a new political disorder, “theocratic fascism,” about to be set loose on the world. About the best he has fared has been to be called (by Newsweek) “Iran’s Mystery Man”.

The historical record of revolutionary zeal’s degenerating into excess is such as to temper enthusiasm about Iran’s future. Nevertheless, there are hopeful signs, including the character and role of Ayatollah Khomeini.

The Guardian on May 26, 1988: Towering Trump

What would he do about Iran, for instance? "I'd be harsh on Iran. They've been beating us psychologically, making us look a bunch of fools. One bullet shot at one of our men or ships and I'd do a number on Kharg Island. I'd go in and take it. Iran can't even beat Iraq, yet they push the United States around. It'd be good for the world to take them on."

IRAN: The Crescent of Crisis

That the Soviet Union is anxious to extend its influence throughout the crisis area is beyond dispute.* What is less certain is how boldly it is pursuing this goal. Moscow’s view of Iran under the Shah appears to have been highly ambiguous. Some experts believe Iran’s Tudeh Communists played a direct role in the well-organized strikes of the oil workers and in the mass demonstrations against the Shah. Russian radio stations broadcast anti-American and anti-Shah propaganda. Yet the Soviets also became the Shah’s third largest arms supplier and entered into several commercial ventures with him, including the purchase of natural gas. A widely held view among foreign observers is that Moscow preferred the Shah’s rule to the uncertainty of what might follow.

Most Western diplomats believe the Soviets are simply exploiting targets of opportunity as these present themselves. “The Russians are great opportunists who will readily take advantage of a situation that presents strategic gain with the minimum of risk,” says a senior British official. But he adds that the conservative Soviet leadership should be credited with properly understanding the serious risks involved in actively seeking to overthrow the Shah and deny Persian Gulf oil to the Western world. He concludes: “There is no concrete evidence suggesting that the Russians have been masterminding or in any way been directly involved in the drastic changes taking place in Iran.”

Priest says ‘Ireland in trouble’

A call for an Irish “Zionist” movement to help Ireland has been made at West Warwick, Rhode Island, by Rev. Edward Flannery, editor of the Providence Visitor, a diocesan weekly newspaper. He made the proposal last night at a dinner of the Friendly Sons of St. Patrick.

“Ireland is in trouble and all our festivities cannot change that fact,” he said.

He compared Ireland with the new state of Israel and an example of what can happen “when sons of the fatherland want to do something for it.”

“Perhaps,” he added, “we need some Irish Zionist to make by miracle, if necessary, a strong and prosperous fatherland.”

P.S. I think the ads in newspapers back to those days are stunning!

TERROR: A SOVIET EXPORT | © The New York Times

On April 24, 1979, West German police arrested a seven-man P.L.O. hit team in West Berlin. The leader of the squad was Ali Shalbiya, a key lieutenant to the P.L.O.’s intelligence chief, Abu Iyad. Within days, two more P.L.O. squads were intercepted as they attempted to cross the Austrian and Dutch borders. Under questioning, the Palestinians confessed that their mission had been to blow up fuel depots and other major industrial installations in West Berlin. Senior officials in West Germany’s Office for the Protection of the Constitution believe that the M.f.S. provided operational data for this abortive raid, as well as for other strikes against targets in the Federal Republic. (Last fall, West German security discovered that the M.f.S. was playing host in East Berlin to a P.L.O. team, code-named “Force 17.”)

As the role of East Germany suggests, the Soviet Union delegates much of the sensitive work of providing liaison with terrorist groups to proxies. Most of the East European secret services, like the M.f.S., operate under complete Russian control; other surrogates, though not always so compliant, are equally valuable. The most important of these are Cuba, the radical Arab states and the ubiquitous P.L.O.

For those who have convinced themselves that recognition of the P.L.O. and the creation of a Palestinian state are the keys to peace in the Middle East and guaranteed oil at reasonable prices, there may be a similar disinclination to deal with evidence that points the other way.
