Should the threshold for old news still be pre-1990s?

I'm just a sometime contributor to this subreddit—not a moderator—so hopefully this meta discussion is allowed.

I really enjoy this subreddit as it is. That being said, the rule in this subreddit for what is considered "old" news has been pre-1990s since at least 2013. Given that 12+ years have passed since then, should what is considered "old" not also shift?

I find that the quality of news in the 1990s still has a markedly different quality than now, even with the entrance of early internet news during that time period. I'm not even necessarily saying the acceptable time period should keep shifting momentarily. For example, maybe there should be a hard cutoff at the 2008–09 financial collapse. Or is there a reason that 1990 should remain the hard cutoff?

I'd be very curious to hear other people's opinions: mods, contributors, commenter, and lurkers. Cheers.
