I love Nikon's Picture Controls. They're functionally equivalent to r/ricohGR and r/fujifilm recipes. Unfortunately, there's not enough adoption from the community, which might be because it's hard to try them out quickly.

(Also because Nikon barely markets the feature, and their official creators only have one sample picture per recipe. That makes it difficult to know whether you like the recipe or just the picture).

To get the picture controls, you need to transfer them to your camera - 9 at a time. With 110 official recipes, that just takes too long. Nikon does not publish the direct .NP3 file for us to download. So I made a repo with them all included!

The idea is, you can load 100s of recipes at a time into NX studio, and then cycle through the recipes on your existing photos really quickly. This lets you try the recipes on existing photos you like, and also lets you try many at a time very quickly.

What's in it:

  • 110 Nikon Creator recipes: the full official set from Nikon's global creator program (GoldenHourGlow, CineM, DGFilmLook, the full CineBias series, vintage film looks, B&W emulations, and a lot more)
  • 30 Nikon Color Grading presets: the official Bleach Bypass, Color Mode, and Negative series
  • 2 NikonPC classics: Kodachrome and Kodak T-Max 400
  • 44 third-party recipes from Alex Armitage, Filmstill, Scott Tucker, and Stephen Morais — mostly analog film stock emulations (Portra, Ektar, Velvia, Provia, Ilford, etc.)

How I Downloaded The Recipes

  1. Connect your Expeed 7 camera to Nikon Imaging Cloud
  2. Browse and save recipes - add favorites to Saved Recipes, then send up to 9 at a time to your camera.
  3. Shoot one RAW photo with each newly loaded Picture Control active.
  4. In NX Studio, open each photo and go to Basic Edit Palettes → Picture Control → [recipe name] → Add to Custom Picture Controls and save.
  5. Export the custom picture control to a file.

As you can see, this quite a manual process. That is why I went through all the profiles so that others may simply download their favorite profile with ease.

All .NP3 and .NCP files, are also ready to drop on an SD card and load straight into your camera.

If anyone has recipes I'm missing (especially recipes from NikonPC), or want to add your own, feel free to open a PR!

Night sky - Chapa dos Veadeiros in Brazil

I don't have much experience in astro photography, but I could miss the chance os taking those photos in a place that is considered one of the best night skies in Brazil.

Silver Zf incoming! Does the 50mm f/1.8 S ruin the vintage vibe? (40mm SE vs 50mm S)

Hey everyone,

I’m a complete newbie and I'm about to place an order on a Silver Nikon Zf. I’ll be honest that I am choosing this camera primarily for the aesthetics because I know having a beautiful camera will motivate me to actually go out and shoot.

I’m currently torn on the lens. I'm deciding between getting the 40mm f/2 SE bundle or buying the body and the 50mm f/1.8 S. I know the 50mm is considered the "GOAT" for image quality, but I’m worried about how a modern lens looks and balances on the silver body. Most photos and reviews I see online feature the black Zf.

Does the 50mm f/1.8 S look too "modern" or front-heavy on the Silver Zf? If anyone has this exact combo, could you share a photo or your thoughts on the aesthetics and balance? I want to make sure I don't lose that classic film vibe.

Thanks!

Zf + 24-120 f4s @ Hangzhou

I know I’m not alone in this. feeling grateful for falling in love with photography, and finding joy in capturing moments. 📸

And during this trip, I realized something too:

no matter what lenses I brought with me, the 24-120 f/4 S always stayed on my Zf most of the time.

But once the sun went down, the 50mm f/1.8 S somehow always found its way back onto my camera.

Best recipe for Skin tones for Z8

Looking for recipes for best looking skin tones. Coming from Fuji, I was pampered with film simulations such as Velvia and Classic Chrome. Velvia stood out in indoor settings while it's not true to color, it made people look more beautiful than they were creating an aura of magic in my photos. I tried using some of those sims using Nikon recipes and tyd results are awful. Is Nikon's own Standard profile seems to be little weak.

Any suggestions appreciated.

How to hold a Zf with MF lens

Hi, I just bought a Nikon Zf with a Voigtländer Nokton Classic 40mm VM, which is a MF lens.

The lens has a focusing tab, and I’m not sure how to hold the camera with my left hand while still being able to control the focusing tab easily. Does anyone have a recommended hand position or grip for this setup?

The Nikon Zf made me fall in love with Black & White photography. These are some SOOC shots I took in Brazil and Japan in the last few months with it.

The B&W switch on the Zf makes it so fun and easy to take Black and White pictures, with and without the film grain options. I really like the JPEGs this camera produces. I didn't use to take many B&W pictures before getting this camera. Loving it so far, especially since I'm usually too lazy to edit pictures.

Question on RAW vs JPG

To give some context I am a new Zf owner but have shot a long time on Z8 and older bodies.

I thought with the Zf when you pick a recipe it only applies the changes to the JPG and leaves the RAW without any edits to include Grain?

What I am having is the JPG and the RAW both have the changes. Is there a way to fix that so I can also get an edited RAW??

Best 35 1.4 for Zf?

Looking for a 35 1.4 to use primary on the Zf (and potentially on Z8)- Z 35 1.4 or adapt Voigtlander 35 1.4 MC II (can be used on Leica M film too, manual focus or I can get the af adapter, comfortable with MF)? Similarly priced and both have "characters". I already have Z 40 2 (I prefer 35 or 50/55/58) and no aperture ring, Contax G35 and Nikon 35 f2 which I both love. I didn't like the 35 1.4 AIS as well as the Sony 35 1.4 GM, and have not been able to find a compact 35 1.4 for F mount. The voigtlander 35 1.5 seems too sharp for me.
