AB1902 inspired by Adrian Gonzales (rapist and murderer of 8 yr old Maddy Middleton) would change the process to extend confinement for certain convicted minors guilty of serious offenses and deemed a danger to the community. I'm including links for contacting state representatives to support this!

If you want to urge your representatives to help this bill "AB 1902" get passed:

Article:

>Bill inspired by Adrian Gonzalez trial passes through California Assembly

Story by Gabrielle Gillette

The California State Assembly began reviewing a bill this month that would change the process to extend confinement for certain convicted minors guilty of serious offenses and deemed a danger to the community.

Assemblymember Gail Pellerin introduced Assembly Bill 1902 in response to the 2015 rape and murder of 8-year-old Madyson “Maddy” Middleton by her Tannery Arts Center Lofts neighbor Adrian Gonzalez in Santa Cruz. Gonzalez, now 26, was 15 when he committed the crime.

Gonzalez was tried as a juvenile after his arrest in 2015, as a state law prohibits people under the age of 16 from being prosecuted as adults.

He was slated to be released in October 2024, after his 25th birthday, but the Santa Cruz District Attorney’s Office petitioned to have his detention time extended, saying Gonzalez could be a danger to society if released.

A first-of-its-kind trial followed in November 2024, lasting three months and resulting in a ruling that Gonzalez should not be released.

Pellerin’s bill aims to change the detention extension process by increasing the maximum amount of time between extension hearings from two years to up to four years. The bill would also expand the types of facilities offenders can be sent to, including a state psychiatric facility.

“Myself, as a mother and a member of a community, I was rocked to my core when we learned of Maddy Middleton’s heinous rape and murder by her neighbor, Adrian Gonzalez,” Pellerin said. “Two years just seems like too short of a time for him to get the services that he needs and for the family to be able to get some breathing room.”

An extension detention hearing, the process which launched Gonzalez’s 2024 trial, is proposed by county probation officials when a ward is nearing the end of their initial detention but is still believed to be a danger to the community.

“AB 1902 represents a significant step forward in the protection of victims by making sure offenders receive treatment, are held accountable, and are released only when appropriate,” said Santa Cruz District Attorney Jeff Rosell.

Pellerin said the bill is a tool to help incarcerated people be placed in the best facility to get the treatment they need, while also giving victims’ families time without constant preparation for a hearing.

Laura Jordan, Maddy’s mother, attended the Assembly Public Safety Committee hearing for AB 1902 on April 14, saying the bill helped her feel seen and heard.

“Today marks the first day in this grueling 11 yearlong nightmare of a battle that I feel seen and heard as a victim,” she said. “My pain and suffering was acknowledged today and it was confirmed today that Madyson’s life mattered.”

Pellerin said the bill is centered around highlighting victims’ voices, experiences and trauma. She also said she met with juvenile justice activists during the process of writing AB 1902 to hear feedback about the bill’s potential implications.

The bill is not intended to be used for every youth case, Pellerin said, but for unique cases in which a person has committed a “crime that is so heinous and so disturbing” and shows no signs of remorse or rehabilitation.

Ultimately, Pellerin said the bill is not only an answer to Gonzalez’s case but is something that could impact other Californians in similar situations.

“I think two years is not enough time for someone who has committed these kinds of heinous crimes to get the rehabilitation services they need,” she said. “I think time is a good thing here.”

AB 1902 passed the Assembly Public Safety Committee April 14 and will move to the Assembly Appropriations Committee.

Packing tips?

Hi! Visiting the area from May 1 - May 8 and am struggling a bit with packing. We’ll be in Big Sur for the weekend and then the rest of the days in Carmel by the Sea, where it seems the weather is expected to be cooler (and rainy the week we’ll be there)

I’m a female from the East coast, so familiar with the chilliness but my packing space is limited and I’m not sure which coat to bring. I’m planning on lots of layers, but do I need a puffer jacket for the mornings / evenings? Or perhaps a wool coat? Or will a lighter trench work? Trying to bring just one if I can.

Thank you! Can’t wait to visit!

Hi everyone! My family (me, my husband, and our almost 3 year old) will be visiting the area for 4 days in July! We’re from Florida so totally new to traveling in California! I’ve got a basic outline for activities, but I’d like some suggestions and fine-tuning! Also any restaurant suggestions are appreciated! Thanks!!

- Check into hotel, get settled, and grab an early dinner nearby

Friday

- Surrey rental? (recommendations for where to bike!)

- Dennis the Menace playground in the late PM

Saturday

Best Priced Brisket?

As the title states, any suggestions on a place to get a reasonably priced brisket around Monterey/Salinas? I’m eager to smoke something this weekend and I don’t want to pay Meatery prices even though I love the quality.

Ocean View Blvd Parking

Hey all,

I am planning to visit the area tomorrow and would like to spend most of the day there. I tried looking on Google Maps for free parking, and saw that Ocean View Blvd has some unmetered street spots a little distance past their metered street parking that are near the aquarium.

I am not sure if the map images are old or not, but I wanted to confirm if those unmetered street spots have time limits to how long you can stay? I didn't see any signs by those but wanted to ask if I should bother with those or if I should drop like $20 for peace of mind in a parking garage to be able to leave my car there from morning until sunset. I plan to be walking around for most of the day to get my steps in!

Thank you!

A disturbing claim posted in the Central Coast Watchdog group is getting attention in Monterey.

A woman says she witnessed someone throw kittens from a silver SUV on Highway 1 near Exit 402B around 3:20 p.m.

She says 911 was called and CHP responded. She also said she believes CHP and firefighters picked up the kittens, but she was not sure how many there were or how many survived.

This is based on the witness account posted online. The full details have not yet been independently confirmed.

AT&T wireless service in Pacific Grove

we live in the Asilomar area of PG and lately our AT&T wireless service has been iffy, at best. We can receive calls and hear the person calling clear enough but they can't hear us - claim we are breaking up.. This is recent so I'm wondering if anyone else is having this issue. We both have iPhones (mine is an iPhone 15 and my wife's is a 12, I think). Thanks!

Know anyone who would love these 2 cats? 6yo littermates need a home.

Nico and Tally are brother and sister from the same litter, born July 3, 2020, making them nearly 6 years old. They are living in Salinas, CA. Deadline for placement is May 12, 2026. They must stay together.

Nico and Tally are indoor-only cats. They do very well with children and small, mellow dogs. They do not like medium or large dogs, and they do not have experience with other cats.

The most special thing about Nico and Tally is how loving they are. They were destined to be lap cats. They will get playful sometimes and enjoy cat toys, but for the most part, they are kitties of leisure.

They enjoy staying indoors, but also love spending a little time outside on an enclosed patio or balcony or by using their harnesses. They are accustomed to wearing harnesses and leashes and wandering around in a garden or yard outside, since they were very young.

Nico and Tally's elderly owner (my mom) needs to downsize to a renting a room that doesn't allow animals, and this brother and sister pair are looking for a new owner to love.

They have been to the vet for all new kitten and subsequent annual visits and have had all their vaccines. However, their last visit was around a year ago, so they would need to be checked up again and given their next round of shots upon adoption. Nico is neutered. Tally is spayed. Full medical records will be provided. They have had no health issues.
