Daffodil Sweater

Finished my intarsia Daffodil sweater (got my jnspo from a children’s sweater on pinterest and remade my own grid)

Overall happy with how she turned out. I wanted it oversized but also a bit cropped.

Completed on my Sk155 bulky machine; intarsia carriage MT5 for the body and regular carriage MT2 for the ribbing

100% Cotton Cardigan

I saw Sezane's Milane top and really liked the shape of it and was inspired to design something with a similar feeling. I used yarn I found at the local arts and crafts thrift store and the only info I have on it is "softball cotton, 100%, hand wash, dry flat." I really wish I could find more because it is lovely to work with. The buttons are from Amazon.

This project combined a few techniques and is the most complicated project I've completed so far! It is a set in sleeve cardigan which I knit on a KH-910 with tension set to 10. The lace and cables pattern is from Bill King's book Machine Knitting Techniques: Cables, which I highly recommend. The button band, sleeve trim and bottom trim are hand crocheted. My fingers are sore. I guess it's been a while since I've picked up a hook!

If you have any leads on what yarn this might be, I'd love to hear it. I've seen silk city carries something similar, but I'm worried it is thicker than my machine can handle since it is classified as worsted/4 and the yarn I used seems more like sport or light DK. It is about 15 wpi.

In case you ever wanted to know what it looked like to be a one-person-shop knitting machine restorer…

One shelf is what I have for sale currently, two shelves are what’s in the queue for restoration/parts, and one picture of what my personal machines are/my current setup (I’m making the Project Hail Mary sweater for a friend). It’s shocking how quickly this room can get cluttered. This is the picture after organizing 😣

Good tutorials for a novice?

Hello! I just got a new flatbed (a bulky) and I only ever attempted a hat (flat and sewn up). Eventually I’d like to learn to make a sweater. Are there any good video tutorials or visuals I can follow? (I’m a visual learner) while I’m on the hunt for someone around me to teach me techniques. Thank you!

Am I making a good decision?

I’d love to start machine knitting. I’m fairly competent in hand-knitting, crochet, dress making, etc and love learning new skills. I’m absolutely fascinated (and completely baffled!) by videos of machine knitting. My mum had a flat bed machine when I was tiny (in the 80s) but other than that, I’ve never experienced one in real life.

I’m tempted to purchase a Silver Reed SK280 and a ribber, but it comes to about £1400. Obviously, I’d need to buy wool too...would I need any other accessories to get started with a sweater? Am I being silly? It seems like a huge amount when I haven’t used one before, but I can’t figure out how to experience one without buying one myself - I don’t know anyone with one, or anywhere I could go to play with one. I’m pretty dogged when I get interested in something and would definitely learn to use it, but would it be a sound investment, or is there a better way to get started?

I had a browse on Gumtree for secondhand, but the few that are available (I’m in Scotland) look frighteningly old and in a bad way.

Need help with sleeve increases

I'm using the basic singer pattern for a round neck jumper and I've run into an issue with the sleeve. I did the ribbing and now I'm supposed to increase one stitch each end for 8 rows but each row it gets tighter and tighter and I can barely lift up the purl bump on the new needle. Am I doing something wrong?

q: how does static interfere with machines?

I'm fortunate to live in an area without a lot of static. Reading troubleshooting threads where static comes up as a movement issue for knitting machines, I was wondering what the mechanism is, since I haven't had the opportunity to see it first hand.

I can imagine static buildup causing yarn to be out of position during stitch formation - just laid down on a working needle, before the needle retracts and pulls it through the previous row, the yarn lifts up and interferes with needle or latch movement. But that's just a guess.

If you've observed static affecting your machine's movement and know what's going on or have a favorite theory, please share, I'm here to learn.

Mary Weavers Ribbing technique

Can anybody help me decipher what she means by “2 bound off rows instead of 3”?

I love reading the tips in old machine knitting magazines but this one has me confused

Worth keeping original ribber box/Styrofoam?

I just bought a KR-830 on ebay and am so excited to finally make some ribbing! The ribber (and box and Styrofoam) are really, really dirty, but not smelly thankfully. Is it worth keeping the original box/packing? I'm not even sure how to clean Styrofoam

Pinned post for value discussion

This thread is an attempt to keep discussions of machine cost/value/pricing in a single place. Once this thread is old enough or full enough, it will be retired and new thread created that links it to that one.

When asking question about value, some important items to include if known are your general geographic region (prices are highly localized), the gauge of the machine (fine gauge/standard/bulky/other), the brand of the machine, the model of the machine, the quality of the machine (clean/dirty, intact/broken pieces, and stand alone/included accessories. If you have photos, you'll probably want to include them.

In general, in person person sales are usually less expensive, and don't require expensive shipping, but you will find a larger selection on online sites. Caveat Emptor for any online sales.

Some places you can find/sell machines for sale are:
* Your local Silver Reed Distributor
* Your local knitting or fiber arts guild
* Craigslist or your favorite secondhand sales site
* Goodwill or your favorite second hand store
* Ebay or your favorite auction site
* Facebook Marketplace or Facebook knitting groups
* r/MachineKnitting for specific machines (include proper flair and useful information)

Beginner w/ Brother KH 864

Hello! I am a newbie knitter and I recently just found a Brother KH 864 machine at my local thrift store that I could not pass up. I have never machine knit before, but have always been interested in learning :)

I am already finding it difficult to find resources for how to get started on this machine - of course, it was missing a manual, haha. I would love any advice/resources for a newbie like me getting started on this machine, and if anyone knows where to find a manual for this machine, I would be forever grateful.

Thank you in advance!

Strawberry purse for a 2yo

I used cotton for the green and some red I have no clue the composition. On the green part I made a knit 2 together for that leafy vibe when doing the folded edge. Some shaping on the down part and I cord for the band.

Might not be the most durable item but it is for a 2 yo and wont wear it a lot, that is why I used left over from other proyects

If I were to remake it for me I would have used full rib for the band and sew it together, and use cotton on the red too

ISO Machine Knitting Teacher / Class in Los Angeles!

Hi machine knitters - I am new to the craft, and in search of a teacher in Los Angeles. The Knitting Tree is the only one I've found, but they won't allow me to join because I have an SK 280 model and they only teach on the LK 150!

I've exhausted YouTube, and think I need some hands on teaching. I've toyed around with taking an online class (Knit it Now, Craftsy, etc.), but at the cost I'm not sure it will be worth it.

Has anyone taken a good online course? Does anyone know of private machine knitting classes in Los Angeles?

does this seem to have everything?

VERY new to researching machine knitting, and found this knitking kh-891 machine for around $500 on marketplace. Seller says it has been refurbished, and new needle beds. I am looking to knit 1940/50s stockinette sweaters, with mainly fingering to sock weight yarn.

New (to me) Brother-knitter

Hey y'all. I found this vintage machine knitter cheap near me, just getting started, enjoy learning how this old machine works as much as anything else, but I have a few questions.

  1. Does anybody know anything about this machine?

  2. Do you think the newer accessories and advice will apply to this machine? (If I need new needles or weights or combs or... Anything)

  3. It says 4-ply yarn can be used on the highest tension setting. The cheap polyester stuff from Walmart is what I'm using. Anybody know if it really can?

  4. what do I oil it with? Should I oil it? I haven't been able to truly "cast on". But I have used the comb to get enough weight to knit a couple rows and it is TIGHT. I have to use almost my whole body weight to yank the carriage back and forth. I've tried a couple methods for casting on and nothing really seems like it's working.

Overall, any info or advice on this old thing would be appreciated!
