q: how does static interfere with machines?

I'm fortunate to live in an area without a lot of static. Reading troubleshooting threads where static comes up as a movement issue for knitting machines, I was wondering what the mechanism is, since I haven't had the opportunity to see it first hand.

I can imagine static buildup causing yarn to be out of position during stitch formation - just laid down on a working needle, before the needle retracts and pulls it through the previous row, the yarn lifts up and interferes with needle or latch movement. But that's just a guess.

If you've observed static affecting your machine's movement and know what's going on or have a favorite theory, please share, I'm here to learn.
