Algae help

Hello all, we purchased a house with this koi pond, and have been okay with opening and maintaining. However with rain and sunlight we have huge algae and hair algae problem. I’m looking into uv lights but unsure which ones would work/ install properly. Any recommendations to help would be greatly appreciated thankyou!

Hello everyone,

I am planning to build a 1000 gallon pond to house a couple Koi for my son as he has taken up an interest with fish (hes only 10 months but loves to stare at koi in a koi pond)

Im a little lost on how to pull this off, I am not massive on DIY but I am a good learner.

From my understanding, ill dig a hole, 5ft by 7ft 3/4ft deep to house just over 1000 gallons.

Ill put down an EPDM pond liner (is this any good?: https://thepondpeople.co.uk/cat/pond-liners/elevate-pond-liners/?utm_source=googleads&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign=21108999575&utm_term=epdm%20pond%20liner&utm_content=%7Bcreatives%7D&gad_source=1&gad_campaignid=21108999575&gclid=CjwKCAjwqubPBhBOEiwAzgZX2iXCA7U0zr1jeoNbLaAh96pCnIojVbNSjoxT4vVMaXgsJjE4LMh5OxoCdhIQAvD_BwE)

I will then get a bottom drain, which will connect to a DIY barrel filter which is in the ground next to the pond? Level with the water is that correct? Then the water can travel up the pipe into the barrel filter?

The barrel filter will then be connected to a pump that pumps the water back into the pond again? And the pump should be rated to move 3/4x the amount of water i actually have?

I am confused on how to attach the epdm liner to the bottom drain, I am unsure if my plumbing would be correct, i actually dont know how to ensure the plumbing would be water proof (do i seal the pipes with something?) and I have no idea how to make a correct DIY barrel filter.

I know I may sound naive but id love to be able to do this for my son.

I have attached a photo of the hole I am planning to dig. If its wrong I am happy to make changes.

I inherited my Dad's beautiful Koi but due to my own health issues I am now looking to sell/rehome them to a better home. I am southern UK based - where would be the safest and best place to market them? And would it be too demanding of me to ask to see the pond of any potential buyers? I just want to make sure they will have a better life or I may as well keep them and keep struggling to maintain! Also, what would a good price be to encourage genuine buyers and deter bad ones who have no knowledge and just see free pretty fish?

There are 18 in total in the pond (the 15 goldfish I have a local pond centre able to take them on), but 3 large koi (I do not know what type they are) around 20-25 years old. I haven't been able to get an idea of their measurement yet but I am confident they are all over 30cm.

I’m really hoping to get some guidance here.

My dad (91) built this pond himself decades ago and it’s something he really loves. He now has dementia but one thing he still thinks about is the pond. I’m trying to keep the pond in decent shape so he can still enjoy it over the summer. I don’t live nearby (I’m a few states away), and with a lot of recent health issues, including a recent "mini stroke" I’m stepping in and honestly starting from near zero when it comes to my knowledge.

Unfortunately, we didn’t keep up with maintenance over the last few years, and many of the larger fish died. Right now, we have a few small koi (around 2–3 inches). I’m doing my best to keep them alive and hopefully get the pond back to where it used to be.

I have two main questions:

1. Water clarity / pond condition:
From the photo, what are the biggest things I should be doing right now to improve water clarity and overall health? I’m not sure if this is algae, filtration issues, or something else. I’m open to any “start here first” steps.

2. Feeding small koi (2–3 inches):
My dad used to feed larger koi (up to ~10–12 inches) with Tetra Pond Vibrance Soft Sticks. Since these koi are much smaller, I am not sure what to do. I tried crushing the sticks into smaller pieces, but the fish didn’t seem interested.

  • Water temp is around ~60°F here in New Jersey
  • I tried feeding around 2 PM
  • Fish didn’t come up to eat...but I will also note they didn't grow up in an environment where they were fed with any regularity due to us focusing on other issues like house maintenance and my father's health.

What should I actually be feeding koi this size? And is the lack of feeding response normal for their size or this temperature?

I really appreciate any advice. I’m trying to learn quickly and do right by something my dad built and cared about a lot. But its hard to do so from several states away.

Hi all. My waterfall is a bit too noisy with the sound of the water impacting once on the rocks an once more into the pond. Can anyone recommend a way for me to dampen the noise without changing the overall structure of the waterfall?

I purchased a house this week that has a koi pond in the backyard full of fish. However the water is green and the filter system doesn’t appear to be running. I have not been able to figure out how to turn the system on.
