Built a PS4-controlled RC lawn mower using an ESP32 — here’s how it works

So I’ve been building a remote-controlled lawn mower using an ESP32 and a PS4 controller, and I’m pretty happy with how the software has come together. Wanted to share the details for anyone doing something similar.
The hardware:
• ESP32 as the brain
• Two Cytron 13A MD13S DC motor drivers for the tank-style drive tracks
• Three relays — an arm relay, a mower motor relay, and a turbo relay
• PS4 DualShock controller connected wirelessly via Bluepad32
How the controls work:
The unit drives in tank mode. You can toggle between dual-stick (each stick controls one track independently) and single-stick (left stick Y = throttle, left stick X = steering mix) by pressing the PS button. The controller LED changes colour to show which mode you’re in — blue for dual stick, green for single stick.
The mower blade has a safety start sequence. When you press R1, an arm relay fires first and holds for 500ms, then the motor relay latches on and both stay high together. Press R1 again and both drop simultaneously. This gives a deliberate two-stage interlock before the blade spins up.
There’s also a turbo relay on Triangle that flashes the controller LED white while active.
The D-pad works as a secondary driving option. The speed ceiling is set by how hard you squeeze L2 — the harder you’ve squeezed it, the faster the D-pad will drive. L1 resets that speed back to zero. Clever for creep mode.
The analog sticks use a gentle S-curve so the low end is slow and precise, and it ramps up more aggressively toward full deflection.
On disconnect, everything shuts down immediately — motors stop, all relays drop. No runaway mower.
The PS4 LED tells you everything at a glance:
• Solid blue = dual stick mode
• Solid green = single stick mode
• Flashing red/blue or red/green = mower motor relay is latched on
• Flashing white = turbo active (white takes priority)
Why Bluepad32 over the PS4Controller library?
Bluepad32 pairs by just holding the PS button — no sixaxispairer tool needed. It also gives you proper analog trigger values, a cleaner API, and it’s actively maintained. Highly recommend it for any ESP32 gamepad project.
Happy to share code if anyone’s interested.

Bought the $150 kit. Not sure how I feel.

I saw the post about the $150 tool bundle and returned my $99 two drill set to get it. Now I’m second guessing the decision.

The radio is cool (assuming it actually lasts), the larger battery is nice, and the huge bag will probably come in handy. The hammer drill is also a nice upgrade, even though I don’t really need one right now.

What disappoints me most is that the impact driver is the older model, despite the earlier post making it sound like it was the newer version.

The thing is, I already have three 4Ah batteries and a fast charger, so I’m wondering if the extra stuff is really worth the extra money. Part of me feels like I should return it and go back to the simpler set. Am I overthinking this?

New Gen 2 CaseStack?

EDITED TO ADD: additional pictures in comments of some new details

Spotted 4 of these at my local Lowe’s today. If I had a reason, I would’ve bought one. Probably will find a reason while in the store.

New homeowner tool kit

I recently purchased a new home and am lucky enough to need a set of power tools to help me with projects around the house. I have never owned any power tools that were my own so I want to make sure I buy something that is well worth my money and it looks like this kit is up my alley. No huge renovations are planned as the home is fairly new, but we are planning on building a garden, installing fence doors, and maybe even building a shed plus all the random house things that may come up. I am leaning towards getting the “complete home kit” from Lowe’s. I know this is a Kobalt subreddit, but are there any drawbacks to going with the 24v Kobalt tool line? Will I be missing out on anything. How does this compare with DeWalt, Ryobi, etc.? Any recommendations?

Battery question/Issue - advice?

OK, so I bought a deal online in 12/24 from Lowes of a tool box, a charger, a 2 amp and 4 amp 24 v battery. Both batteries have died. I went into Lowes and the manager swapped me the 2 amp reluctantly, told me to call next time get an RMA and he has no 4 amp.

Called Kobalt, they gave me an RMA but insist I must return the entire kit (which is no longer available) meaning the tool box, charger 2 and 4 amp battery. All I need replaced in the 4 amp, and I'll throw back the new 2 amp if it makes the RMA happy to get 2 working batteries back.

But return the charger and the toolbox? Heck, I gave the tool box to my dad, I didn't need it. (Xmas time, yo know?) Come on. The warranty is on the battery, not the package.

How's my best way to approach them? To top it off, no store in reasonable distance has in stock single batteries, and the 2 packs are 2 2 amp or 2 4amp, no 2 amp plus 4 amp, so not sure the deal anyway.

Advice? I just want my 4 amp replaced. Not all this drama. Thanks

48v chainsaw released!

After 2.5 weeks pending shipment Lowes released my bare tool for shipment. I have enough batteries from last few years sales. So I’m excited to slap a longer bar on it and have my shorty to buck and this to cut.

40v Trimmer Prob

Tried to restring the trimmer, but 2 problems:

  1. I’m supposed to be able to twist the knob to wind the line, but it is very difficult to wind.

  2. When ready to go, the line won’t advance when bumped.

Went to Lowe’s to ask for help, but a clerk said Kovalt was bought by Ez-Go and cust service may now be non-existent.

Any thoughts? Help?

TIA.

$150 Kobalt Kit Sale

It’s on sale for $150, normally it’s $300. Sale ends August 31 so no hurry.

To clarify, it’s the newer hammer drill and impact. It shows the older impact, I don’t know why. I know they have the regular drill and impact set on sale for $100 right now, but I’d honestly go for this one.

For $50 more you get the radio (which is $140), the hammer drill over the regular drill (which is $150 and I never see it go on sale), the rolling tote bag, the 150 Watt fast charger over the 85 Watt, and a 4AH battery over the 2AH battery.

I’ll post a link to it in the comments

I don’t even think this is all of them! I’ve taken advantage of the “2 batteries + 1 case + free tool” deal a few times which results in a bunch of chargers. At most, I need one 24v charger and one 40v charger. Don’t want to just pitch them. The alternative is boxing them up for storage, never to be seen again. Curious what others do with them?

I got a few gift cards for my bday this year and wanted to order the inverter I couldnt stomach paying 70 dollars for. Low and behold it seems that Lowes lowered the price to 49.99 and free same day delivery. Comes in handy

In my opinion Kobalt has the worst impact driver on the market but I love their compact impact wrenches so I just decided to get these adaptors and throw them on there.

Charger fire risk?

I saw a few Instagram post where people installed off switch switches to their lithium ion chargers for their drill batteries in their garage because they said it was a common cause of house fires. In some cases, they just unplugged the charger afterwards, but that’s a little bit harder to do because you have to be there to manually unplug it when it’s done charging.

This isn’t necessarily Kobalt specific, but does anyone else have any strategy to address the potential fire risk? Any firefighters or first responders who can chime in on whether it’s a potential problem or not?

Hart tool battery adapter/next steps

3rdP/Ryobi/Crsftsman/Kobalt/Dewalt --> Hart 20v Tools

Hey so I'm sure lots of people have Hart tools and batteries from different brands.

Are there adapters out there that protect the batteries from low voltage to not destroy them and work well?

If not, any redneck way to rig up the tools to take a different brand battery?

Last month I bought the 80v lawn edger. Not wanting to have just one battery or tool, I figured that I would buy the 80v, 18" chainsaw. Unfortunately, the combo deal has been unavailable. Looking on the Lowes site, it does not look like there are many 80v tools, or very many 8pv battery options.

Is the 80v being phased out? I don't need a heavy duty chainsaw, but it would have been helpful. Should I look at the 48v instead? I don't want to buy something that's going to be unavailable in a couple of years.

I now know about the stop sale issued because of the usb c battery system. I see the tools are now on sale by themselves (minus the mower I don’t see that, but the string trimmer with universal power head, blower, are available by themselves without the batteries).

I have a handful of 24v batteries from my 24v lineup so I could buy the new tools and use my old batteries. But does it make sense to wait until they release with the new batteries again (assuming they’ll do this after addressing the safety issues).

Was pretty excited for this lineup but this stop sale has been a damper.

I plan to upgrade to the 48v max line once Kobalt gets their act together and puts the products back out for sale (I know some of the tools are available just as the tool only right now).

Anyways, I’ll want to offload my 24v tools like my mower, blower, and string trimmer. Have you guys ever tried selling your older tools before and where have you had success doing so?

Just purchased one of these. Maybe I’m not searching correctly but I can’t find many recent reviews on the MAX-Lithium 42-in 20 -HP Battery Lawn tractor in this sub. If you have one and see this would you folks mind commenting pros and cons on it so far please? Thanks!
