Encode wireless power kit is a hit! Which lock should we do next? (POLL)

Quick recap for anyone who missed my previous posts: We built a wireless power kit for the Schlage Encode/Encode Plus. A small IR transmitter, drop-in battery module, lock stays at 100% 24/7, currently shipping at $149. Last post here.

Across the threads on this sub, a bunch of you DMed or commented asking whether we'd support other locks - Aqara, Yale, Kwikset, Switchbot, Level, a few others.

Before we commit engineering, I want a real read from the people actually living with these.

Poll (click to vote + see live results): https://strawpoll.com/BDyNz0pbWyR

Standard caveat - if this feels too product-y, tell me and I'll pull it. You all have been generous.

Check out the encode kit here: https://encode.wi-charge.com

Any video doorbells that can handle a second doorbell?

TLDR: are there any good HomeKit doorbells that can be on the same circuit with a second regular doorbell (two doorbells total)? (The Logitech circle view doorbell cannot).

I have two doorbells at my house, one at the front door and one at the gate to get to the door. I previously purchased and installed a Logitech circle view doorbell camera at the gate doorbell. At the time I had a nonfunctional smart doorbell at the front door so I basically just had the one doorbell- the Logitech.

The Logitech worked great until this weekend when I finally got around to replacing the nonfunctional doorbell with a standard dumb doorbell. As soon as I installed it and rang it, the circuit got overloaded and blew the doorbell transformer.

I called Logitech and they told me the circle view must be the only doorbell on the circuit. If you have a second doorbell, it must be on a separate transformer and separate chime.

Since I already have the Logitech installed, I may just have an electrician install a second circuit for the other doorbell if it’s not too expensive.

If it turns out to be cost prohibitive, is there an alternative HomeKit doorbell that can be on a circuit with another doorbell?

How are you naming multiple shades? Siri keeps messing up the commands

Just put three smartwings blinds in the living room. If I say "Hey Siri, turn off the living room" to shut off the lights, Siri also triggers the shades. I currently have them grouped in the Home app.

How do you guys name or group window coverings so Siri knows the difference between lights and blinds? Trying to find a naming convention that actually works without having to yell a specific paragraph at the HomePod.

Kwikset locks not working

I’m still new to apple home, it took me like an hour to get my Aqara u400 lock up and running.

I have a Kwikset halo select plus. It’s a WiFi/ matter lock. For the life of me, I can’t get that one to connect to my home.

In the app, u switch it from WiFi to matter. It goes into pairing mode with a pink/purple blinking light. But for some reason, I can’t get the home app to connect.

Anyone have similar issues or a good work around?

Hardwired Apple TV. As my router.

1080p HKSV Indoor/Outdoor camera/doorbell recommendations?

I am looking for camera recommendations of any kind, really, that support HKSV. I'd prefer 1080p since they will mainly be used on HomeKit, which is limited to 1080p. Also must have motion and recording. Thanks.

Logitech circle view plus regular doorbell somehow fried something?

I have two doorbells. I installed a Logitech circle view camera a year ago in one of them and have not had any problems. The other doorbell was a nonfunctional ring camera.

Today I decided to switch the non working ring camera for a normal doorbell somehow. When I rang the normal doorbell, I heard a bad noise come from the doorbell chime and the power to both doorbells is out. The circuit breaker that the doorbells are on did not trip though.

Anyone know what went wrong and how to fix?

HomeKit Switches without clicking noise

Hi everyone,

I’m planning to replace all the switches in my house with smart switches and I’m looking for recommendations.

My requirements:

- No mechanical relay (I want to avoid the clicking noise)

- Must work as a regular on/off wall switch

- Any wireless protocol is fine (Thread, Zigbee, Matter, etc.), but no Wi-Fi switches (I prefer something more reliable)

- Native Apple HomeKit support (no Homebridge if possible)

I’m open to different brands and ecosystems. Reliability and silence are top priorities.

Thanks in advance for your help!

Eero HomeKit help

Hello! I need a little help,

I have an eero 6 mesh WiFi system, Meross smart accessories, an ecobee thermostat, and 3 Apple HomePod units.

I have AT&T fiber internet, where the router is a router modem combo, and I had enabled pass through for the eero.

After setting up the eero mesh system, everything took some time to configure, but eventually all devices were communicating properly and were fully controllable through the Home app.

However, starting last night, all of my Meross devices and my ecobee thermostat are showing “No Response” in the Apple Home app. The strange part is that they are still connected to WiFi and fully controllable through their individual apps.

Right now, the only devices responding in the Home app are my HomePods but sometimes in the home app they say “network issues” but if I ask Siri to play music or ask for weather they are able to respond correctly. I have tried a lot of “fixes”: restarting the WiFi, restarting the HomePod that is the hub, removing the devices from the home app and corresponding apps and re registering them. Within the eero I turned of the 5 GHz temporarily to see if they will show up with the 2.4 GHz, I’ve turned off client steering and thread. Still nothing.

Has anyone experienced something similar or know what might be causing this?

Constant problems with Phillips smart locks

I purchased these locks for the main reason we could control our locks from anywhere, in case someone forgot to lock a door, a family member needs to stop by, etc.. I needed to purchase the WiFi bridge to make this possible, since I’ve gotten these locks it’s been a constant issue that the app doesn’t line up with the actual lock, as you can see in the picture it doesn’t recognize the genuine position of the deadbolt. The garage shows it’s unlocked when it is locked and vise versa for side door, sometimes one of the locks will completely show unavailable which is rare but it does happen. The only fix I’ve noticed that works is removing the cover plate and popping one of the batteries out to reset the lock every couple of days. All of my Locks are within 25 ft of the router besides the garage which is approx 35ft. Is there any fix to this to get these locks to work better?

SwitchBot Garage Opener

I recently installed the SwitchBot garage opener relay. It works as intended and shows up in the SwitchBot app as an actual Garage opener. Put it in HomeKit and it’s a switch. 😒 Anyone installed one of these and got it to show up as a garage opener using HomeKit or Home Assistant?

Thanks

HomeKit Cameras cut out after 5 seconds on Mac Mini

I have an unusual situation that I am at a loss to explain. We are a heavy Apple household and I have one device that is just acting weird.

One of our two wifi Apple TV 4K is the default home hub and is listed as the currently active one. It is running tvOS 26.1 at the moment. There are a few HKSV cameras set up, namely Aqara E1 and UniFi Protect Cameras that are being served via Scrypted.

When I connect to any of the cameras on my MacBook Air, iPhone, or iPad, it works great and I can stream to my heart's content. However, if I connect from my Mac mini, I will only get about 5 seconds of video and then it will disconnect.

I disconnected the Ethernet and have the Mini & Air on the same wifi sitting right next to each other and the same behavior is still exhibited. I am at a loss to explain it. The only think I can possible think of is that the Mini is on 26.3.1 and the Air is still on 26.2. Similarly, the Mini will routinely show "Updating..." for devices in HomeKit where my other devices won't.

Automating lights in bathrooms

Hi All,

So I have some Lutron caseta to automate lights and dimmers in 2 bedrooms and family room. As you all know Lutron is expensive. I was looking to automate bathroom lights so I am looking for less expensive options. What is your strategy on automating lights for bathrooms and store room kind of areas where basic automation is turn on the light when there is motion / presence? Do you have presence sensors / motion sensors and then turn on a light switch. What light switch do you use which is not expensive like Lutron. I can use smart bulbs but then ensuring that they are always powered on is difficult as people will turn off the switches due to muscle memory. What is your strategy of automating “less valuable” and “infrequent use” areas.

Wemo plugs not responding?

Admittedly, they are one of the models that was discontinued recently, so could be tied to that, but wondering if anyone else is having this issue. Now that the wemo app doesn’t work, I can’t reset my plugs. Considering getting new plugs but would love to try to make these work.

Smart homes are supposed to be functional first

I think this video is a great watch, as a reminder that smart homes are not just a fun hobby, but are also supposed to improve the lives of everyone living it them.

Mostly pointing at the part where Paul headed to the US and his Tado heater turned off while Anisha was at home. I am sure that was a a fun conversation that ensued.

Issues with matter router. Maybe I don’t understand

I’m a complete noob to all this. So bear with me.

We are iPhone user obviously and we just bought a house. I wanted to start things the right way with an Apple TV as the hub but the rumors of one coming out soon has me waiting.

So far I have a

Kwikset halo select- WiFi/matter version

Aqara u400 lock

A hunter smart fan on matter/wifi

And I just got the Aqara M100 router

I setup the Aqara hub and lock in the Aqara app nicely But when it comes time to go into the home app it gets all weird.

I feel like the app is mad I don’t have a appletv or HomePod. So it’s not allowing me to add my wife into the home. I can’t get my Kwikset lock or fan to connect.

Do I really need a HomePod or AppleTv?

Dirigera sensor (temp/humidity)

So was futzing around my HomeKit tonight with some new soil sensors from ThirdReality. They’re Zigbee so I added them to HomeKit through my Dirigera hub. Worked flawlessly.

Then, while moving rooms around, I noticed a sensor I couldn’t figure out in a room I have my Homebridge bridges in (pretty much where all accessories start when added). It’s an extra temp/humidity sensor. When I tap on it, it just loads the Dirigera bridge. It’s not correlating with any of my humidity/temp sensors. It doesn’t seem to just be an average humidity of all the sensors paired to it either.

I was under the impression the Dirigera hub didn’t have sensors for temp/humidity, etc. Has anybody else with a Dirigera hub seen this in their HomeKit? I’ve never noticed it prior.
