How is it booked solid the exact moment the reservations open

I wanted OG lake for the night of Aug 11. I can't believe the moment 8 am hit, everything was booked solid. Are people using bots or something to book these sites? I thought you can only book 3 months in advance? Very frustrating.

Mount Assiniboine - Naiset Hut Reservation - June 24 Conditions?!

Hi everyone,

Back in January, I managed to book a Naiset Hut reservation for June 24 to celebrate my birthday. At the time, I was surprised by how easy it was to get the date I wanted compared to the usual reservation chaos with campgrounds and other backcountry huts. Now I’m starting to think there’s a reason for that… maybe it’s just waaaaaaaaaaay too early in the season.

I know the summer season for the huts at Assiniboine officially opens June 21, but with this year’s record snowpack, I’m getting a little concerned. I’ve been checking the Assiniboine Lodge webcam almost daily and it still looks like full-on winter — snow EVERYWHERE and is that a sleigh? :)

Has anyone here been to Assiniboine around the third week of June before? I’d especially love to hear from anyone who has stayed at the lodge or campgrounds, or hiked in from Sunshine Meadows or Mt. Shark that early in the season.

I know Sunshine Village is re-opening June 20–July 5, but I also know people who work there and it's a little glorified - the plan is to move all the remaining snow on the mountain to the runs accessible by the Strawberry Express chair. The top of the Strawberry chair? Well, that’s the start of the trail through Sunshine Meadows enroute to Mt. Assiniboine! I’m fine with some snow travel, but I’d rather avoid post-holing 30 km just to reach the huts… and then doing the same thing trying to get to The Niblet, Nublet and Nub Peak.

I know weather is forever changing and I’m just trying to get a feel for real trail conditions and expectations from anyone who has been there at this time of the season in the past. Also, does anyone know the best way to contact BC Parks about current conditions? I’ve heard they can be really helpful.

Any insight, past experiences, or advice would be hugely appreciated! This is my first time and I may have been too excited actually getting the reservation and did not think about “Summer” in the mountains.

Thanks everyone!

Pharoah peak

Hello, I'm planning on hiking Pharaoh Peak this July. Since Egypt Lake Campground is fully booked, I'm wondering if anyone has slept at the summit (without a tent), using only a sleeping bag. Edit: From what I know, not putting up a tent and only sleeping in a sleeping bag isn't illegal, right?

Hike ideas

I’m trying to take some friends out hiking, they’re not quite as experienced as I am I want to take them somewhere in the kananaskis area and looking for some suggestions. I’m looking for a hike ideally around 8kms (can be out and back or loop), and no more than 400 meters of elevation, ideally leading to a nice view (as good as 400 meters elevation can get) and ideally not more than 1.5 hours from Calgary. Thank you I’m open to any suggestions

Wasootch Peak is a nice little conditioner if you’re in need of ideas for early season :)

Very little snow left, and most of the patches can be bypassed. Minor scramble near the summit, but it’s not exposed. Good grind to get your butt in shape for the season!

Visiting Banff and Jasper for first time, what are some must do hikes and activities?

I’m going to be flying into Calgary for a week at the end of July. It’s my first time in Canada and I wanted to see Banff and Jasper. What are some must do most beautiful hikes and fun activities in these areas? Where can I best see wildlife? Are there any cool animal sanctuaries I could visit? Feel free to also recommend things outside of those areas but within like a couple hours or things near Calgary too.

Tonquin Valley Trail (June 15-20)

Hey all, my girlfriend and I are looking for a 3-5 days backcountry loop for our upcoming trip in mid june.

Multiple people had recommended Tonquin but after looking into it i'm curious to know what you think the conditions will be like at that time of year? Additionally, what are the odds parts of the trail won't be passable?

Given we're flying in from Ontario we don't really want to plan something that may not be possible given the conditions.

If this is genuinely a bad idea - are there any other loops that we might have better luck with?

Thanks in advance!!

Unnamed Mountains.

Hey what’s the process of naming mountains? Theres this mountain on the East side of Abraham lake that is totally unnamed and I was wondering how you go about naming it. Do you have to be the first to summit it? Thanks

Lake O’Hara bus reservations

Hi everyone,

Me and my boyfriend are planning to visit the Banff area for a week next month (the week of June 19) and would really love to visit lake O’Hara. I have been trying to get the bus pass, but no luck.

I would really love and appreciate if anyone is cancelling theirs and I can grab it. It’s a special trip for us and was really looking forward to visit O’Hare.

Thank you for all your help!

So, I booked late July campgrounds at Red Deer Lakes, but I don't have a car and I'm not sure how to get to Fishcreek trailhead. Are there any shuttles available?

Greetings, everyone. My name is Swayam, and I am a 22-year-old male. I am planning a backpacking trip through Sunshine Valley to Egypt Lake, with the intention of hiking Pharaoh Peak on the second day. I would greatly appreciate any tips, recommendations, or advice you may have. Additionally, I am open to others joining me on this solo hike. It will be a 2 night stay over egypt lake campgrounds.

Caught a group on a lookout point below me as I was heading back down from the summit last weekend. Nice sense of scale with the view in the background 🤌 also, a young bighorn sheep who was on the trail as I came over a crest.

Question about ticks

This is a genuine question because I’m interested and also a little confused. I have never seen or encountered a tick on a hike in Alberta. (Lucky me! I’m so happy about this!) But every year around this time I see reports about DROVES of ticks. I went up Wasootch Ridge today and per AllTrails reviews of the hike, the ticks are out and some people have already found them on themselves. I also saw reviews from Wasootch Peak that mentioned ticks everywhere.

Where are people finding them/what on earth are they doing to encounter all of these ticks? Are these people rolling around in the grass? Even today when I was sitting on the ground having lunch, I looked all around me trying to see where these heaps of ticks were and I just didn’t see any?! I often wonder if some people are mixing up ticks with other bugs, but then again, I couldn’t even find many OTHER bugs on the ground.

Don‘t get me wrong, I’m THRILLED to be lucky enough to not finds ticks everywhere but I’m a little confused at how I’m the only person seemingly not encountering an army of ticks?
