All 10 animated films released on HD DVD in North America

(excluding interactive HD DVD games like "Dragon's Lair")

I also included the animation techniques used by each film as well.

Also most of these are WB titles it seems (with "Beowulf" being distributed by WB internationally).

The only HD DVD that I have

I do plan to pick up the HD DVD release of John Carpenter‘s the thing as I hear that’s better than the Blu-ray release in every way possible

I May be in possession of 90-100 HD-dvd disks. Is there something I should be considering or preparing before ripping all of them?

Is it even possible with makeMKV?

Update: seems like a mixed bag of bang for buck, and bad luck. Some disks may rot, others may not read via makesMKV & a special HDdvd player (Xbox 360) is required to read them. It’s a gamble at a price that is not worth pursuing. Thanks everyone for the input. If things change, I’ll update.

Question: uploading discontinued media to archive.org is against ToS, right?

Hd DVD Haul Results

So I just started collecting over the past week and I have the results of my first acquisitions. I have the rotted vs the not rotted I am beyond disappointed that Batman Begins was rotted. I also find it funny that both Warner bros dual sided discs are working and none of the single sided Warner bros ones are 😂.

PS5 asking to change DVD region and says I can only do it 5 times?

So I tried putting a DVD into my PS5 and it gave me a message asking to change the DVD region. The message says I can only change the region 5 times total, even if I factory reset the console afterwards.

I’m really confused because I don’t want to permanently mess something up just to watch one DVD. Has anyone else had this happen? What should I do?

For context, my PS5 is from Europe and the DVD is most likely American (region 1).

Warner Bros leaflet for the introduction of the HD-DVD / DVD combo discs

Warner Bros leaflet for the introduction of the HD-DVD / DVD combo discs. And the seastone.com Elite cases with the little “feet”. Still my favourite keep case. I’m a big slipcover fan but really didn’t mind these superb cases being “naked”

Hey everyone,

A little while ago I posted here about MovieShelf, the physical media collection app I built for DVDs, Blu-rays, and 4Ks and how this community helped me build collection with all in one features.

A lot of you were honest about the biggest issue:

25 free imports didn’t feel like a real free tier.

That feedback was fair.

For a collection app, people need enough room to actually use it, test it, and see whether it fits their workflow before hitting a wall.

So I listened and changed it.

What changed

Free users are no longer limited to just 25 imports.

I still have a few paid/pro features for people who want the extra stuff, but the core cataloging experience is now much more open so you can actually use the app without immediately feeling blocked.

Why I changed it

A lot of the feedback on my last post was basically:

“I need a real free tier to even try this properly”

“subscription isn’t a fit for this category”

“Can’t really say about the app with just 25 free imports”

That all made sense.

This app is for collectors, and if the free experience feels too restricted, then I’m not really giving people a fair chance to decide whether it helps them.

What MovieShelf does

barcode scan

search & add

cover scan

custom fields

duplicate detection

track format / edition / packaging / audio / subtitles / region / shelf location / notes / condition / more

What I’m still focused on improving

The strongest feedback from this subreddit has been around:

boutique / edition-level matching

better version selection

exact cover handling

larger-collection workflows

Android

imports from existing collector setups

That feedback has been genuinely useful, and I’ve been taking it seriously.

So if you installed MovieShelf before and bounced because the free tier felt too limited, this is basically me saying:

I heard you. I changed it.

If you want to give it another shot, I’d love to know what you think now.

App Store:

https://apps.apple.com/us/app/movieshelf-media-organizer/id6760224869

For the existing users, please update the app before using.

And if you still don’t think it’s the right fit, I’d still love to know:

What is the one feature that would actually make you switch from your current setup?

I'm just wondering if anyone's had any issues with disc rot with this particular title. I know it's a Weinstein Company release, and not WB, but I'm not sure if those titles had a high failure rate or not.

I held the disc up to a bright light and could not see any spots of rot on the disc, yet when I tested it, it gave me the dreaded 408bc504 error after a certain point.

At least I got this one for free, along with "A Christmas Story" and "V for Vendetta" (which also did not work, as was expected since those are WB titles), so I didn't lose any money with this (they came free with an HD-D3 player that I bought for a friend who wants to get into collecting HD DVDs and already has a small collection).

Found this at a thrift store. Happy to see an HD DVD title that I wanted

I've seen conflicting reports, with some saying it's HD-15, and others saying it's HD-30.

Looking at the back, it says the movie is 89 minutes, and that all the special features are on the DVD side (which I assume is DVD-9). Wouldn't it be quite strange and frankly stupid to have JUST an 89-minute movie (and its audio & subtitle options) on an HD-30 when that would cost more for WB to have manufactured? I looked at images of the non-combo reissue that came out 10 months later, and it lists special features on the back, so they probably made a new HD-30 disc just for that release, so that's probably why people got confused, especially since this non-combo version is the one inside the "Best of HD DVD - Family" box set (alongside "Scooby-Doo", "Corpse Bride", and the non-combo version of "Happy Feet").

Two other releases have similar topics for discussion, and can give an insight into this situation.

"TMNT" is definitely an HD-15, and also apparently a DVD-5 on the DVD side, but it is 87 minutes (two minutes shorter than Ant Bully), and not only has a bunch of special features on the HD side, but also TrueHD audio, much like the Ant Bully.

"Twilight Zone: The Movie" is on an HD-30 for HD DVD, and a BD-50 for Blu-ray (I have the latter). But you would think it's weird that this release requires that much space, since it's only the 101-minute film and the theatrical trailer (no featurettes or anything included due to the controversy surrounding this film). But looking at the picture and sound quality, it's obvious they used the extra space to their advantage, since it's one of the best-looking (albeit inconsistent, due to having four different respective directors & cinematographers) and best-sounding hi-def releases I have experienced personally. I think a lot of the space needed comes from the fact that it has THREE English audio tracks: a lossless 5.1 track (TrueHD for HD DVD, PCM for Blu-ray), a Dolby Digital (Plus) 5.1 track, and a stereo track, as well as mono tracks in French & Spanish.

So yeah, overall, inconsistencies show in WB's habits, and I wanna know if the Ant Bully combo is truly an HD-15, or if Google's AI is giving me misinformation (I don't really like using Google AI at all for that very reason).

(NOTE: the image attached to this post is not mine, and was only downloaded from eBay for demonstration purposes)
