UPDATE ON $50 GAMING PC!!!

GUYS I FIXED IT!!!!!

I bought this gaming laptop for $50, owner claimed that the CPU “overheated” and that he took it to a professional and the professional said that the CPU was bad and it needed a new mobo.

I opened the laptop and there was thermal paste on the VRM and VRAMS! Which there shouldn’t be. I bought a PTM7950 pad and thermal grizzly putty. After hours of it still overheating I found out the layer of thermal paste provided by the pads was too thin, I went over it with thermal paste and LO AND BEHOLD!! IT WORKS!!

Specs:

ASUS G17 ROG STRIX

Ryzen 9 5900HX

32GB RAM

1tb SSD

RTX 3070

Why are Panther Lake gaming laptops using the 386H instead of the 388H?

Am I the only one who thinks this decision makes no sense?

Almost every Panther Lake gaming laptop announced so far is using the Intel Core Ultra 386H instead of the Core Ultra X9 388H, even though the X9 388H comes with the much stronger b390 iGPU. The explanation people keep giving is that it supposedly doesn’t matter because these are gaming laptops and they already have a discrete GPU.

But that logic completely ignores how gaming laptops actually behave on battery. When plugged in, yes, the dGPU is obviously much faster. But the moment you unplug, laptop GPUs throttle extremely aggressively. This isn’t just an entry-level problem, it basically applies to all laptop GPUs. Battery power limits drop performance so much that gaming on the dGPU quickly becomes impractical.

That’s exactly where a stronger iGPU like the b390 would actually make a difference. It would allow gaming on battery without the massive power draw, heat and throttling of a discrete GPU, which would make gaming laptops genuinely usable as portable gaming devices.

The strangest part is that this can even result in a downgrade compared to older systems. Someone upgrading from a laptop with a Core Ultra 9 185H or 285 could actually end up with weaker integrated graphics performance if the new Panther Lake system uses the 386H. So a generational upgrade could literally reduce iGPU performance.

A Panther Lake gaming laptop with the X9 388H would offer the obvious best of both worlds: full dGPU performance when plugged in and a genuinely capable iGPU for gaming on battery. Instead OEMs seem to assume the iGPU doesn’t matter at all.

best gaming laptop under 1000 budget for students who also game?

I need a laptop that I can use for school during the day and gaming at night so i want something balanced and not too bulky. my previous laptop overheated during longer sessions and the battery didn’t last through classes which made it frustrating to use daily.

What is the gaming laptop under $1000 that can handle both productivity and decent gaming performance?

TUF A14 (FA401)-Internal Screen Black/Grey in Windows, but PERFECT in BIOS

Laptop Specs:

  • Model: ASUS TUF A14 (2024/2025) FA401
  • CPU: AMD Ryzen AI (9 HX 370)
  • GPU: NVIDIA RTX 4060
  • OS: Windows 11 (Clean Install)

The Situation: I have a very specific "Handshake" issue.

  • The Good: My internal screen stays on perfectly in the BIOS menu. No flickering, no grey screen, no blackouts. The hardware seems fine.
  • The Bad: The moment I boot into Windows, the ASUS logo appears for 1 second, then the screen goes Black or Solid Grey.
  • The Context: I can hear Windows sounds and use an External Monitor via HDMI perfectly. The keyboard stays lit.

What I have tried:

  1. Full Clean Install: Wiped all partitions, reinstalled Windows 11 (Offline OOBE).
  2. Driver Order: Installed AMD Chipset, ASUS System Control Interface v3, AMD Graphics (VGA), and NVIDIA Graphics in the "Holy Order."
  3. The Trigger: The screen died right after the MediaTek WLAN/Bluetooth driver installation.
  4. Device Manager: "Video Controller" and "PCI Data Acquisition" were showing yellow exclamation marks until forced updates.
  5. Refresh Rate: Tried forcing 60Hz via an external monitor; the internal screen flickered but stayed black/grey.

The Theory: Since the BIOS is 100% stable, this is clearly a driver conflict between the AMD Ryzen AI iGPU and the MediaTek Wi-Fi card (which I know share a PCIe power bus). It seems like the AMD driver is aggressively undervolting the panel or failing the handshake when transitioning from the BIOS "Basic" driver to the "Adrenalin" driver.

Question: Has anyone found a specific VBIOS or Registry Fix (MPO?) that stops the TUF A14 from "killing" the internal display signal during the driver handshake? Is there a specific AMD driver version that actually works with the MediaTek card without crashing the display bus?

Advice on gaming laptops needed, I have no idea about specs etc!

I'm looking to buy a gaming laptop as I'm going back to study in Septmber but really I wanna play some Total War!

Just wondering if anyone could give me some tips on what specs to go for. I'll be playing Atilla (which I've heard can run badly) and Rome 2 plus all of the good overhaul mods. I know these games are old now but I haven't played since Medieval 2 which I played to death!

I've got a decent amount of money as I want to be able to play on high graphics etc. and have the option of running newer releases and other games.

I need a laptop as I travel a lot so a PC is not an option unfortunately. I'm based in the UK and don't just want to go to a chain electronics shop as I know I'll be able to get something cheaper and stronger online.

Any help and suggestions would be much appreciated as I know nothing about software, specs etc.

Thank you for any feedback!

Hi! New Owner Of a Gaming Laptop and Crimson Desert

Hi!

I recently became the owner of an HP Omen Max 16 laptop (the version with a 5080, 32GB of RAM, and an Intel Core i9 Ultra). I have to confess that I've always been a console gamer; I have a PS5 and a Nintendo Switch, and I never thought I'd have a place to play with much better resolutions and smoother gameplay.

I didn't buy the laptop; it was a gift that came with a Xiaomi monitor with 2K resolution and a 100Hz refresh rate. Because of this, I have many questions about the computer's overall performance, but specifically about the best way to play this game without putting too much strain on my computer.

The thing is, I've played for about 5 hours spread over the last 3-4 days because I haven't had a chance to sit down and play properly, and because I'm a little worried about the temperatures.

My setup is as shown in the images, and these past few days I've had average temperatures of 85-88°C for both the CPU and GPU with the automatic vents, and 81-83 with the vents at max. My laptop is on a stand that suspends it to allow the fan to breathe, but it's not a cooling pad.

Do you have any advice regarding the temperatures? What about optimization?

I apologize if my questions seem obvious or silly, as I've never played on a PC before, and although I have watched some helpful videos (especially regarding drivers), I've always preferred the opinions of real users.

I also apologize if I use any incorrect words, as English isn't my first language.

Thank you very much. 😁

Looking for recommendations on a budget gaming laptop

Me and my best friend grew up playing age of empires, going back to the first AOE (yeah, we're old).

He's always talking about how much he misses the days of when we'd play AOE together. Unfortunately, times are tough and he doesn't have the money for a computer of any sort. So, I wanna buy him a laptop or pc that he can use to play AOE.

Any suggestions on a budget pc or laptop that'll run AOE smoothly, or the best place to find one?

Planning on getting a laptop for sub £500. Is the acer nitro 5 good?

Planning on getting a laptop for sub £500. Is the acer nitro 5 good?

I am likely going to get the acer nitro 5, as its the only UK sold laptop with decent performance and is under £500. It has a 1050 this one, but i wont use it for anything more demaning than minecraft probably, as i have a PC at home for the more demaning games. This laptop is for school and travel, not a daily driver for main stuff. I'd also be putting fedora or ubuntu on it because im a fan of linux (not arch btw)

Buy a 5060 Laptop now or save for a 5070 ti later?

I have about 1200$ i can spend rn and im eyeing the neo 16s for 1300$ but it comes with a 5060 on a 1440p panel.

I mostly play gacha games, my most extensive game is probably Helldivers 2, but I do want to play stuff like Cyberpunk, Death Stranding 2 etc.

I heard that 1440p to be viable u need 12GB VRAM but 5060 doesnt have that, but also i might not need it anyway since most of my games are weaker.

Should I save for the 5070 ti or buy the 5060 now?

help a noob out with a good school/gaming laptop

Hey, casual gamer that likes to play solo rpg. Currently have a Acer nitro V (2016) that's on it's last leg. I want to play games like cyberpunk, elden ring, upcoming mortal shell 2, etc and i understand if i want a good experience/ future viability, a mid-upper tier build would be best. I'm also a med student and need it for school/ residency. currently leaning towards lenovo legion 5 with something along the lines of 5060 or 5070ti if there's a firesale. thoughts? (open to all suggestions. I just don't know what i need per say compared to what's optimal)
