Hilariously crappy stock subwoofer

Like many owners I’ve seen in this sub, I’d been suspecting for a while that the stock “VW Premium Audio System” subwoofer in my 2026 GLI was broken, because I literally could never hear any bass coming from it, even with the subwoofer setting maxed out in the EQ. Changing the sub level made absolutely zero difference to what I heard.

Today I finally took the subwoofer apart, and honestly I was shocked by how absurdly cheap this thing is. The enclosure itself is huge, but once I removed the cover, I realized the actual subwoofer inside is just this tiny little speaker sitting in one corner, barely taking up any space at all. It honestly feels like VW made the enclosure huge just to hide how tiny the actual driver is. And this thing is only 50 watts. The rest of the enclosure? Completely empty. Literally just a giant hollow plastic box with nothing inside.

It’s honestly hilarious in the worst way possible. And the speaker itself is super junk too — paper cone, bargain-bin garbage-tier stuff. I’m genuinely speechless. No wonder you can never hear anything from it inside the cabin.

This seriously lowered my opinion of Volkswagen. Their standards are way too low if they can call this a “Premium Audio System.” That name is basically a joke at this point. This “subwoofer”won’t cost them over $40. I’d much rather pay them a few hundred extra bucks for some speakers that’s at least somewhat decent.

Shift Boot and Knob - Install

Completed a BFI shift boot and knob replacement, but the boot was one of the most tedious processes. All the videos and documentation I found for my install were helpful, but I found some improvisation was required.

For instance, there's no section in the directions that includes chopping the boot down to size for a fold/crease free installation. On top of that the included tape is junk, I ended up buying a roll of doublesided 3M tape and cutting it to size.

So for those at there wanting to do it, caution, it's a slow tedious process. I found it worthwhile after seeing it installed, but I understand alot of the dialogue around skipping the boot replacement.

GLI or Si?

Hey everyone,

I’m stuck between a 2020+ Civic Si and a GLI and wanted some owner feedback.

I drive about 21,000 km/year, care about reliability/cost of ownership, and only plan on doing mild mods (tune, intake, maybe intercooler). I maintain my vehicles well and don’t abuse them.

For people who cross-shopped or owned both:

  • How reliable has your GLI been?
  • What’s maintenance actually like?
  • Any major issues or regrets?

Looking for something fun, practical, and affordable to own long-term. Thanks!

Exhaust and valve stem seals warranty work question

I went to get my car looked at because I’m burning oil and having a puff of blue smoke on cold start, leads me to believe it’s valve stem seals based on some research I’ve done and the pcv is working as intended. When I went in they said they won’t cover my head replacement due to aftermarket exhaust. Has anyone had there head or valve seals replaced with a aftermarket exhaust under warranty?

Alignment

I was having issues with my alignment for about month. The car would drift and feel uneasy I bought new tires and knew it was time to get it sorted out. So I went to Firestone and they botched my alignment horribly the first time I took it 2 more times and they said the car had nothing wrong with the suspension. I finally just demanded my money back and took it to the VW dealer. They also did an inspection and found no suspension faults but that I have an uneven front right break pad wear 6/5. The car definitely feels better but I don’t know if it’s because I’m going crazy but very rarely it feels like it wants to drift again.

So how much Horsepower do we really think it has?

26 GLI owner here. Never really owned a performance ish car like this before so I can’t comment other than I feel like this car is pretty fast. I’ve read/seen multiple reviews of the GLI that have stated that it feels like it’s got a bit more power than the listed 228HP, and reviews also mentioned that VW likes to give pretty conservative estimates on the HP numbers on a lot of their cars.

Like I said I don’t feel like I have the knowledge base to make an estimate. Maybe the high torque and the jolt when the acceleration kicks in adds to this feeling? Anyone dyno theirs to test this? General estimates are welcome too.

Bought a 2023 GLI with 11k miles from the Toyota dealership. They offered me a $2586 warranty for 5 years/125000miles/$200 deductible, with their Toyota backed max coverage warranty. Wondering if it’s worth it.

So recently I installed new rims (FAST FC04 & before you start grilling me yes they’re on Hankooks) on my gli and I’ve noticed a couple things: these rims are 0.5” wider (8”) and offset is 40mm vs oem which is 49mm, so they sit more outwards and flush with the car. Before, the car had a wobbly/floating feeling to it but now i feel than even more, specially on high speeds it feels unstable and kinda not glued to the pavement + steering is much more sensitive to all the uneven spots of the road. Now my question is how much of these symptoms are due to tires being Hankook and how much are due to the tires sitting more outwards and flush?

Hi all, sorry in advance as I know this has been discussed before but I wanted some insight on my case specifically; Is there any objective reason to switch to a thicker oil from the recommended 0w-20 VW508? I change my oil every 3k-3,500 miles using Liquimoly top tec 6200 0w-20 (overkill for intervals but best be safe then sorry), and I was seeing a lot regarding my using a thicker oil being best for long term reliability. This comes up as I have the warranty covered issue where blue smoke is seen at cold starts, and the dealer is going to replace the head and PCV system on the engine; this got me thinking more about long term reliability and wondering if using a different engine oil with a thicker viscosity would prevent issues that may occur in the future in or outside of warranty. Let me know your thoughts and thanks in advance - for further context, the summers in my area are quite hot with most days in the summer surpassing 90 degrees Fahrenheit and are usually in the 100’s by mid day. I do a lot of city driving as well if this is relevant

Coil Packs

As the title suggests, its time for new coil packs. Which do you recommend on a budget with a time crunch? Looking to get from box dealer due to me needing it so last minute.

A dime fell in the old cigarette lighter/charging port. I used tweezers to remove it. I bumped the site and it zapped, ever since thing the touch screen lost touch. It was only half the screen, now the whole screen is not responsive. Could this be related or is this a common issue for these touch screens? I’m thinking it’s just coincidence, any recommendations on how to fix or replace touch screens? Thanks!!

Current setup:

  • APR rear sway bar
  • 034 subframe locking collar kit
  • 034 dogbone insert
  • BBS CH-R 19x8.5 ET35
  • 235/35R19 summer tires
  • Stock wheels with 225/45R18 winter tires
  • Open air intake for sound

Note: the picture shows 235/40R19, but I switched to 235/35R19 due to rear fender rubbing with passengers.

Considering next:

  • DieselGeek short shifter
  • CTS Engine/transmission mounts
  • Performance brake pads
  • Lighter 18-inch wheels
  • Stage 2: clutch, intercooler, downpipe

Main use is fun daily driving and mountain roads. What would you prioritize next for better feel, handling, and driving enjoyment?
