Proud excerpts 🏆

Instead of looking through multiple prompts, this time everyone has the same one: which excerpt are you proud of?

Include a little summary about why you picked it. Did you love the word choice or descriptions you came up with? Maybe it was one you finally finished after being stuck for so long? Or you felt a meaningful, personal connection to the scene/character? Any reason is valid!

You may post multiple excerpts, but in separate comments. As always, interacting with others is encouraged!

WIP Wednesday

I thought it might be nice to do this again, and find out how your projects are moving along or if you've started anything new!

We all have our open projects, those new chapters or one-shots which aren't quite ready to release into the wild yet. So here is your space to yap about them and let us know what you're working on. Whether it's still at vibes stage, actively in production or coming soon, we want to hear about it.

This is also a space to discuss WIPs with other writers: chat about research, commiserate about editing woes, anything at all really. So come on in, pull up a chair and let us know what goodies you have in store for us.

Leave your top five most-used ship tags and let people make assumptions about you.

Leave your top five most-used ship tags and let people make assumptions about you.

It’s been a bit since we did “most common fandom” or “most common character” tags, so I thought it might be fun to do ship tags this time.

Drop your five most-used ship tags below and let people make good-humored assumptions about you based on them. If you want, you can also include an image of your most-written ship so people can see the dynamic.

Bonus round: you can also include your five most-shipped characters and let people make assumptions from those too.

This is meant to be lighthearted and fun, so please don’t be overtly mean in the replies.

You can also include how many times you’ve written each ship, what percentage of the tag is yours, or any other stats you feel like humble-bragging about.

One Word Except Challenge: Verbs

Hello everyone! I thought this would be something fun to try. A good excerpt game is always a great time, so here’s one all about verbs. There are a lot of them, so your goal is to find an excerpt that really captures the verb that’s posted.

Rules

 1. Post up to 4 verbs.
 2. Reply with excerpts you know of that showcase those verbs in a cool way or, if you’re super bored, write a quick original excerpt. (I’d suggest keeping it around 100–400 words per excerpt.)
 3. Read what others post. Leave comments, give upvotes for the excerpts you enjoy, and just have a wonderful, hopefully relaxing day/night/whenever.
 4. Reading others’ excerpts might spark inspiration, give you a new idea, or make some random flashbulb go off for a stylistic choice in your own writing.
 5. And of course, mark your excerpts as NSFW when needed.

Shipping the Writer

Hey there, everyone! Hope you are having a nice weekend!

We all write for characters we love, as well as ships we enjoy quite a lot, often shipping the characters themselves, our ocs, or ourselves.

So for this activity, I thought of trying to ship fellow writers! For this purpose, comment what kind of characters you like, both in personality and physically, and if you have done oc/canon or selfinsert, feel free to tell which characters it was with for an extra help! Also, tell us if you have any preferences (example: you prefer to be shipped only with women) Then, go answer other people's comments and give them a character to ship them with! Can be one of your ocs or a canon character!

Since there's a chance the person might not know which character you are referring too, pictures and gifs of them are allowed! In the case of book characters that don't have an adaptation, make sure to credit the artist if you are using a fanart!

Happy Friday everyone. It’s time for the Long Deadline Profile Exchange 🎉

HOW IT WORKS: This is a subreddit event where everyone posts their AO3 (or FFN) profile with some information about the kind of fics they write. Then, the other participants will look through their profiles, read a one-shot or chapter by the author, and then leave a comment on one of their works. (A kudos would be nice too!)

DEADLINE FOR ENTRY is **Sunday May 3rd at 6PM CST**

DEADLINE FOR COMPLETION is **Saturday May 9th at 6PM CST**

[Timezone Converter](https://dateful.com/time-zone-converter)

*What Are the Rules?*

Post your profile link and a short summary of the kind of stories that one might find there (fandom, genre, rating, etc.). Please spoiler anything triggering or NSFW.

Once you enter, you will have to review at least 4 stories/chapters from 4 different profiles (one from each). Please include in your submission "Reviewed 0/4" so we can keep track.

Your reviews should be thoughtful. The writer should be able to tell that you read the story. Say what you like about the story. Did something crack you up? Were you brought to tears? Did you have a favorite part? TELL THEM ABOUT IT! At least 50 words per review. Here's a link to a [discussion on what makes good RE comments](https://www.reddit.com/r/FanfictionExchange/s/GSLDLRGzHQ), and some [examples sub members have shared](https://www.reddit.com/r/FanfictionExchange/s/SOP0XH5CMC) of great comments they've appreciated receiving in exchanges.

ConCrit, stating you are "fandom blind" and/or "from Reddit" are opt-in only. After you've left a comment, reply to their post on here to let them know.

Only reply to an individual entry when you’ve read their fic or if you want to ask a question. **Also please refrain from adding gifs and images to these replies as they are not relevant to whether you’ve reviewed a fic.** We’re happy you’re excited about reading, but please be mindful of cluttering up the thread.

If possible, it would be awesome if everyone read at least one person who is new to them.

If you enter the exchange, DO NOT delete your entry. You must complete the required reviews for the exchange. Please talk to the mods if something comes up and you have concerns about doing something in a timely manner.

But above all, have fun and happy reading and reviewing!

I was thinking this might be something to put out, and it might be something people enjoy participating in as well. For this, the locations can be specific (certain town, certain place) or general (kitchen, beach, park. etc.)

Okay, here are the rules

 1. Post three locations you want to read as the location of the except (you may post up to four locations as prompts)
 2. Reply to the locations with excepts you know of, and think are cool, or if your super board write a quick except. I would suggest around 100-400 words per except would work just fine. Make sure of course to leave spoilers for NSFW stuff in your excepts.
 3. Read the excerpts people post, comment and give up votes for excepts you like and have a wonderful and hopefully relaxing day.

What was THAT thing you researched for your fic?

We've all done research for our fanfictions at least once. After all, when we tend to be passionate about our stories, whether it's the concepts, characters, etc. we tend to do a little research just to make sure you've gotten something right. But sometimes, the things you research are outright bizarre, concerning, or may even make your personal FBI agent feel a little suspicious about you. That's what this discussion post is all about.

So what was the most bizarre, concerning out of context, or otherwise THAT thing you had (or even not had to) research for your fic?

For me, I may have a few things, but the one I can remember from the top of my head is doing a little research about >!cat penises, looking up if the penises are retractable, if all felines have barbed penises, and if intercourse was painful with the barbs.!< One of the characters in a fanfic series I'm writing is an anthropomorphic ocelot, and I wanted some funny dialogue in a scene where he and another character are going to >!have sex!<, he brings up having a >!barbed penis. !<Now could I have gone a different route and gave the anthro animal characters >!human penises !<instead? I could have. But come on, it would have made for some funny dialogue if I went for giving my anthro characters fitting >!penises.!<

And speaking of >!animal penises,!< the next tidbit I didn't research myself but was rather flashbanged with when watching a video about gorilla facts was the fact that gorillas have >!tiny penises.!< And now, whenever I write smut with one of the canon characters, who is an anthropomorphic gorilla, I give him a >!tiny penis!< just for that reason.

So now it's your turn. What was THAT thing you researched for your fic? And if you'd like, feel free to share the context.

Welcome to the May edition of our Monthly Shlong Swap Review Exchange!

In this exchange we offer up our long fics and swap with other writers for a minimum of 10k words.

WHAT IS A SHLONG?

DEADLINES (all are 11:59 PM EDT/EST):

To enter: May 7th

To finalize swaps: May 10th

To complete swaps: May 24th

Here’s a time zone converter.

THE RULES

 1. Offer up a long fic, or a specific arc of a long fic, which is at least 10k words. Works must be posted at the time of the swap. In your entry include: title and link, fandom, rating, summary, any content warnings (spoiler triggering and NSFW content), and the word count being offered (specifying whether this refers to the whole fic, set number of chapters, or an arc).
 2. Look through the thread to find stories to swap for. Swaps can be for chapter count, word count, or a combination of both provided it’s explicitly agreed between both parties upfront. You may turn down a proposed swap for any reason, you don't need to say why.
 3. Record your swaps clearly, including the Reddit username of your swap partner (without the ‘u/’) and a counter for the number of chapters you have agreed to review. Mark swaps once they are complete. As below: Swap 1: Reddit Username - 0/4 Swap 2: Reddit Username - 3/5 Swap 3: Reddit Username - 10/10 - completed Participants may not have more than three incomplete swaps at any time.

If you are unable to find a swap partner by the deadline, you have no review obligations. However please do not delete your entry as the mod team will need to take note of this.

IMPORTANT All the usual subreddit rules apply. As per Rule 8, all reviews must be genuine, thoughtful, and detailed, with a minimum of 50 words about the fic itself per chapter, demonstrating you’ve actually read the agreed portion of the fic.

Concrit (constructive criticism) and mentioning you are “fandom blind” or “from Reddit” are opt-in only. Don’t include any of these in your reviews unless the author has explicitly said they are welcome.

As always, any concerns or questions about the exchange or the comments received should be directed to the mod team

Happy May and happy Shlonging!

Character Q&A Showcase

Here is a fun activity for anyone who enjoys writing characters or roleplaying them in small bursts. Fill out the short questionnaire below to introduce your character so others have a baseline for who they are. After that, people can ask your character questions, and you answer in the character’s voice and tone.

Think of it as a mini interview panel where everyone brings someone from their story or fandom.

Character Questionnaire

What fandom is your character from?

(If they are multiverse or AU, feel free to mention that too.)

Are they an Original Character or a Canon Character?

If you had to sum up your character in five words, what would they be?

What are the most important things in life for your character?

If they are an OC, what is their connection to canon?

(Example: student at UA, clan member, side character from a hidden village, long lost sibling, love interest, etc, etc.)

If they are a canon character, how is your interpretation different from the usual canon version?

What is your character’s main goal in your story?

What is the character’s greatest challenge in life or within your story’s plot?

What are three unique things about them that make them stand out?

Since a lot of us are often fandom-blind when reading each other’s work, I thought this might be a fun way to get to know everyone’s favorite characters a little better.

First, share the character you write the most. This can be your favorite, your comfort character, your usual POV character, or just the one who keeps stealing the keyboard from you.

Tell us a little about them and why you enjoy writing them.

Then, share one character you haven’t written yet but really want to try someday. What makes them interesting to you? What would you want to explore with them?

Reddit only allows one image per post, so feel free to include one picture and describe the other character, or link them if you want.

And of course, feel free to reply to each other. Ask questions, gush a little, and help make this a fun character-sharing thread. 💛

You probably hear this expression all the time: “write for yourself”. But those same people would be lying if they said that they would be fine with never getting a comment. Comments are what keep us going. We publish because we have a story to tell, and we want others to enjoy it. So it's nice when they tell us they do

For this discussion, talk about some comments you received that hold a special place in your heart. You can summarize them, or copy and paste (only the comment, don't mention any usernames). How did they make you feel? Did they renew your writing spirit? Make a bad IRL day more bearable? Validate something about your story that you weren't sure about? Let's show how much comments mean to writers.

All the AUs Exchange

Ah, the AU. Whether you're changing the setting, the characters themselves, or just sending their canon adventure off on a brand new course, it falls under some definition of AU.

For this exchange, everything from canon divergence to full out new settings to melding fusions and everything in-between counts. (Crossovers that don't really alter either world's setting or cause a canon divergence from either fandom's canon don't technically count for this exchange, but I'm not enforcing it so use your best judgment.)

To enter, you may submit up to 3 links and in return you must read and review 3 chapters/one-shots by different authors.

Please include in your entry: Title/Link, Fandom, Rating, Word Count, Summary, Warnings (use spoiler for NSFW or triggering content), and a Review Counter

Entry Deadline: Tuesday, May 12, 11:30pm, CDT

Review Deadline: Sunday, May 17, 11:30pm, CDT

Reviews must be genuine, thoughtful, detailed, and a minimum of 50 words about the fic itself, demonstrating that you have actually read the story. Constructive feedback and mentions of being “fandom blind” or “from Reddit” are opt-in only. Only include these if the author has explicitly stated they are welcome.

F/F REVIEW EXCHANGE!!!

Hello and welcome to the yuri lovers’ realm!!!!! The template for this cover is taken from https://www.canva.com/p/valmoheno/ on Canva.

This is an exchange specifically about F/F works! Characters do not have to be cisfem - as long as the fic contains romance or even romantic tension (even unrequited) between two or more female characters, it is fine! Plotty or character-driven, gen to explicit, it’s all fine! If there are SIDE pairings of other configurations, it’s also fine, but the main (or at least one of the main) pairings should be F/F (or F/F/F+). Please refrain from entering works that do not center on at least one F/F (or F/F/F+) pairing. You may enter a CHAPTER of a longer work that centers on a F/F pairing even if the longer work is not focused on them.

For this exchange, you may enter up to 4 one-shots or chapters of a longer work (if you do the latter, please specify the chapter)!

Please read and comment on two (2) entries from two (2) different authors. If you liked the work, also please leave the author a Kudos! Please track on your entry number of works read (#/2) and also comment on the entry of the person who you have read.

On your entry, please include: fandom, rating, link, type of pairing (f/f, f/f/f, multi, etc.) and content/trigger warnings.

Your reviews should be thoughtful and show you’ve read the chapter/story. You may also include a summary and word count! Concrit, fandom blind, and from reddit are opt-in only - do not include these in your review unless the author says you can.

DEADLINE TO SUBMIT ENTRIES: Wednesday, May 13, 11:59 PM CST

DEADLINE TO COMPLETE REVIEWS: Tuesday, May 19, 11:59 PM CST

Constructive Feedback Swap - May

Review Exchange: Constructive Feedback Swap

Welcome to another edition of the constructive feedback swap! This exchange is to swap with fellow writers, to ask and answer specific questions about our writing. There's no specific theme to meet, everything is welcome!

If you’d like some suggestions about the kinds of questions you might ask, and/or how to provide constructive feedback, I’ve made this hints, tips and resources document

Rules

 1. Offer up a one shot or individual chapter you would like constructive feedback on.

 2. In your submission state fandom, length, rating, any relevant warnings (please spoiler NSFW and potential triggers) and the questions you are looking to have answered about your work. There’s no maximum number of questions, however please consider the time it will take someone to review your work and answer them constructively.

 3. Look through the thread for someone to swap with. Because of the kind of exchange this is, you don't have to pick something you’ve never commented on before. In fact, if you have already read it, you might find giving the feedback easier. If you offer a swap, the other person can decline for any reason, and they don't need to specify those reasons.

 4. This is important! For all your swaps, agree upfront how the feedback will be provided. This might be in an ao3 comment, by DM on reddit or discord, a shared Google doc created for the purpose, or another mutually agreed method.

If you don't find a swap, then you may consider your obligations under this exchange fulfilled. There are no limits on the number of swaps you can make, however please consider the extra effort which will be required in order to complete your obligations.

Once a swap is agreed please edit your post to state who you are swapping with, and edit again once the constructive feedback has been provided to help me keep track.

For posted works, it would be nice to leave a kudos on the fic if you enjoyed it. A public comment, if you are not providing your feedback that way, is a courtesy rather than a requirement for this exchange. Once you provide the requested constructive feedback in the manner agreed, your obligations have been fulfilled.

Enter and agree swaps by: 15th May 2026, 7pm BST (UTC+1)

Feedback Deadline: 22nd May 2026, 7pm BST (UTC+1)

It's peer learning time! Let's swap some fics and get some constructive feedback on our work!

Wholesome m/m relationships exchange

How this works:

your m/m relationships should have a ”wholesome/ non toxic” relationship.

It’s ok if your story contains heavy theme/ trigger warning/ sad endings as long as the main romantic/ sexual relationships are what is typically known as wholesome.

To participate:

post a link up to 3 one-shots or chapters from a longer fic.

Please make sure to include:

1-Rating.

2-Word count.

3-Content warnings.

4-approval or disapproval of “from reddit” or “fandom blind”

In return you must: 3 reviews on 3 works/ chapters/ one shots from different authors (Leaving a kudos would be nice too.) Then, after you have left them a review, reply to their post on here to let them know.

Deadline for entries: *Tuesday 12th of may/2026, 12 pm in AST utc+3

Deadline for reviews: *Tuesday 19th of may/2026, 12 pm in AST utc+3

Timezone converter [https://dateful.com/time-zone-converter]

At the end of your post on here please keep track of the number of reviews you have made with something like 0/state number of fics to be reviewed.

Happy reading and reviewing!

It's always great when people ask questions about our work. After all, who doesn't love getting a chance to talk about things like their favorite characters, inspiration or the specific details of their story?

So for this activity, leave an excerpt (up to 400 words) from one of your works (posted or still in progress) in the top comments. Then go to other people's excerpts and ask up to 3 questions per excerpt, and answer the questions people leave on your own excerpt. (You can opt out of answering any questions if they get too personal or uncomfortable.)

I hope you all have fun with this! 💛

Let's write a crackfic!

Let’s write a crackfic together! Start with one sentence, then the next person continues, and we’ll see how ridiculous it gets. Anything goes — crossovers, out-of-character behavior, chaos, absurd AUs. As long as it's humorous, it works!
