Slapped a 105 Di2 groupset on my Al2 Gen 4

Never did a full groupset swap before. Honestly, hadn’t wrenched on a bike since the 00’s. QUITE a lot has changed! I donated the removed Claris groupset, which had about 500mi on it, to a local bicycle co-op. Well technically I traded it for a bottom bracket tool. Anyway, the build was quite doable aside from some dicey cable routing around the bottom bracket and out the drainage holes (see last photo). Mid way through the build I thought I was cooked since the frame is not routed for Di2. In hindsight I may go back and route the Di2 wires from the seat tube, down to the BB, up the downtube and then down the outside of the BB where the original cables ran. Either way the wires will have to contour the BB which is pretty tight. I didn’t do nearly enough research ahead of time as far as how the Di2 system worked. I had no idea there were any wires at all. I assumed it was wireless bc that’s kinda how it’s marketed and talked about (in my mind). I was surprised to see a battery! I thought each component had their own battery within. Anyone else do this build? How was your experience?

Just bought this Domane 4.5 Disc Compact from 2016

Paid 937 EUR for it! What do you think? Happy to join the club!

<1 year in w/ AL5

Setup is in a good spot: ent 2.0's, gp5000as, blendr seat & handlebar mount, black seat clamp, almsthr saddle bag, west biking top tube bag. Have some SPD-SL pedals I need to mount. Happy with how she looks + rides but i'm itching to pull the trigger on a carbon frame. Great bike, 1st road bike.

Is it normal?

So, I bought a Domane AL 2 Gen 4. (My first road bike btw) and the seat hurts my crotch and I even wear padded shorts. Do you think it’s just the hard saddle? Idk

Trying to dial in the setup of my bike. I am pretty content with saddle setup (height, level, a touch to the front) but the bike/cockpit feels (too) big. Started with a 100mm stem and experimented with 90 and 80mm in both directions. Nothing feels 100% right. Last thing that crossed my mind: should I look for a size 54? I am 1.80m (5ft11) with relatively larger torso than legs. Or is it a matter of getting used to a road bike? I am m51 and just got my bike half a year ago. On 165mm cranks, and short reach (75mm) 38cm bar.

Got this today! Big upgrade from my aluminum. I'm really excited to put some miles on it! Would you consider these normal marks for a new bike? The top tube ones I can't feel with my fingernailvbut the steerer tube is almost like chipped.

Cheers!

New setup on Domane AL 5 Gen 4

Was looking for a somewhat clean setup that would allow me to have my phone, light, and GoPro on the limited handlebar space. Finally ended up with the following:

  • Quad Lock for phone. Will probably print a Quad Lock/Garmin adapter once I get a bike computer.
  • Bontrager XXX/Pro/Elite Stem Blendr Duo Base to hold the bike light and GoPro.
  • Outbound Lighting Detour bike light with the Action Camera Quick Release Mount.
  • GoPro Hero11, with an extension arm mount, connected to an external battery.

Hi,

Looking to pick up a SL 5 or 6 soon but I heard about SL Gen 5 coming out late summer.

What I could read were-
Getting rid of rear Isospeed
Getting rid of internal storage

It sounds like both of these would be worse changes for someone looking at Domane for comfort endurance but I’m new to road biking so unsure.

Any thoughts / comments?
Thanks!

What is this for?

Not sure what this barrel type thing is for? I'm guessing either brake caliper or gear barrel adjuster. But I already have those on the brake and derailluer respectively.

Hey all first road/gravelish bike purchase in 5yrs so dont know the market as well now.

Trying to decide on a an older domane vs new gen gen 4 AL5.

The used option is from 2020 but its a carbon sl6 with an upgraded RIVAL AXS 2x setup. It has the dual isospeed and all else is stock incl alloy wheels. Looks to be in great shape by a local roadie.

Would like to put at least 38mm tires on either. 70%road/30%lightgrav

Main question is buying a similar price used 6 yr old frame carbon safe or best to stick with the newer gen aluminum version with lower end drivetrain (105). price for both about $2400 total after tax etc. Thoughts about warranty issues on older carbon frame have me spooked but otherwise im leaning on the used/wireless setup which would be sweet.

Thanks for any advice!!

Domane SL6 Gen 3

Negotiated down and paid $2300 total to include shipping and taxes from Bicycle Blue Book on eBay. I’m a shorter rider so finding a bike on the used market was difficult… but I was so happy to find this one from a notable seller, and for those familiar with the scoring used by bicycle blue book, all components scored a perfect 5/5, so truly “like new” condition.

I’m just starting to take biking more seriously and I know I’m going to love the hobby and it stick with it, so I decided to get something I’m going to love riding for the next 5-8 years.

Did a lot of research and love this bike on paper but wondering what your experiences are with this model and would you have purchased it at the price I paid?

Last season, I had my Domane SL for around a year before the rear isospeed thing started creaking (revision 4). I nipped the bolt up to somewhere between 5 and 6Nm (my torque wrench isn't precise to do it upto the 5.2Nm indicated) and all was well in the world again.

This year, after taking my bike out of storage and riding it it's creaking again. I checked the torque and it's still tight. I removed the saddle and tried cleaning the seatpost and the metal clamp in the isospeed with rubbing alcohol. I noticed they were both dry to begin with and pretty clean as it happens. I reinstalled the seat and torqued it up again. I also checked the torque of the saddle rail clamp but the creaking when in the saddle is still there.

As I say I noticed the seatpost and clamp were both dry. Could I try carbon assembly paste on the interfacing parts to see if this sorts the creak? I am mindful that Trek specifically don't mention about these parts being lubed/pasted up - presumably because the grease/paste could absorb into the seatpost and swell it up?

Tldr; torqued isospeed rev4 creaking when in the saddle. Seatpost/clamp interfaces are dry. Can I try assembly paste on the interfaces or is it not recommended to use on these parts

Thanks :)

Has anyone run a front fender or mudguard on the Domane Gen 3 with 35mm tires?

Trek advertises a max of 32mm with fenders but few tire manufacturers are making 32mm with tread I'm looking for anymore and I want to avoid 30mm on the trail.

I tried the PDW Origami but the front tire rubs when turning. The SKS S-Board advertises up to 38mm and straps to the fork instead of the downtube like the Origami, but I'm still unsure about the clearance.

Anyone with good alternatives?
