Should I switch from Dog Chow? Frequent ear infections.

My Pitbull gets constant ear infections. He has been on Dog chow lamb flavor. I’m looking for something within my budget (about 1.50 per pound) to switch to if it would help him. I was considering diamond naturals but seems like they may not be recommended? I appreciate any suggestions for alternatives. Thanks.

Any WSAVA food for small underweight dog to gain weight, but not too expensive?

Hello folks,

I have noticed that my dog isn’t very food motivated. When we feed her, she doesn’t usually eat everything. I’ve been substituting her training treats with her actual food, so she is gaining a little weight. But she is still showing ribs

I acknowledge that people see obese dogs as normal, but this is not the case. I have an Italian greyhound, and have compared her to other dogs of her breed. Her breed is meant to show 2-3 ribs, but all ribs showing is not a good sign

I suspect that because she is not food motivated, I will need to switch her food. So that even if she doesn’t eat a lot, each bite has more calories and she can get to a healthy weight. But then I realize that some high calorie foods that people recommend are not good in the long term, not appropriate for small dogs, or are quite pricey

I tried looking into Hills and Royal Canin, but they don’t seem to have high protein options

I have seen folks recommend puppy food. But that’s only a good short term solution. If our dog is going to consistently be non-food-motivated, I don’t want to keep her on puppy food forever

Another that I’ve seen is IAMS Proactive Health High Protein or Purina One High Protein, but they’re both not small dog appropriate. The kibble will be too big for her, which will de-incentivize her from eating further

I have seen others recommend Purina Pro Plan Sport and High Protein. I’m lucky enough to find PPP Sport High Protein Small Bites (so it’s high protein and for small dogs), but the downside is that it’s only available in small 6 pound bags, or 37.5 pound bags. While $2.00 a pound means $70 dog food for a 37.5 pound bag, my limit on getting dog food is 30 pounds. I fear the giant bag of dog food will spoil past 2 months. So I’d be getting the small bags which are $3.22 a pound, or about $20 for a 6 pound bag

I believe my best bet is Eukanuba Small Bites ($2.50 per pound, so $75 for 30 pounds) or Eukanuba Premium Performance ($2.68 per pound, so $75 for 28 pounds) since I’ve heard it’s a high protein WSAVA brand, but it also accommodates for small dogs. My only gripes for both of them is the price

I’m in a bit of a pickle. I am leaning towards buying Eukanuba at this point, but I’d love to hear what other people have been doing for their dogs

The qualifications I’m trying to find is: good to feed long term, appropriate for small dogs and not too expensive (I’m hoping $2.00 a pound max)

I thank any of you to anyone that comments, I truly appreciate the help!

Best Food? Help!

We are on the 1st steps of of our (maybe) Allergy journey. with our 8 pound 5.5 yr old Bichon Frise. We've visited the vet. and they are suggesting a switch from Iams small breed chicken and rice to a Salmon as protein food. (if this does not work we will be going down the path of prescription hydrolyzed diet) theyd like to save my wallet and i would too. Anyone have suggestions as to one we should try 1st? I honestly have been reading the past 3 days and havent come up with anything but pro plan. I am certain i havent read it all and welcome the help.

Looking to switch from ziwi peak

Does anyone have a recommendation for a high quality dog food I can feed to my 20 lb puppy? He’s been eating ziwi peak but the vet just told me that he’s gaining weight despite being pretty active. I started researching ziwi and found out it’s incredibly high in fat and can cause weight gain so I want to switch but would like to give him something that is high quality and minimally processed. Or even if anyone knows of what criteria I should be looking at in terms of fat and protein content, that would also be helpful. Thank you in advance!

Where to go after hydrolyzed protein?

Looking for suggestions on where to go after a hydrolyzed protein diet.

My dog was having digestion issues and showing signs of pica at the beginning of the year, so his vet recommended a hydrolyzed protein diet. He's been on royal canin hydrolyzed protein and has done very well for the most part. No more pica and consitent bowel movements.

Now that the food trial is over, it's clear to me that he had issues with his previous kibble, Purina pro plan salmon. But I'm having trouble deciding where to go from here? I don't mind keeping him on a hydrolyzed diet though it is rather pricey given that he's 80lbs. His vet suggested gradually introducing him to anything new but had no brand recommendations.

Looking for new dog food suggestions or whether he's better off on a hydrolyzed protein diet.

Using boiled pig heart and the stock/water

Hi, I picked up some pig hearts for my 40kg malinois as the butcher didn't have any chicken hearts which are his favourite meal topper. He doesn't really like raw meat so I thought is boil them up as I do with the chicken hearts. My question is, is the left over water/stock worth sprinkling over his kibble? If so do I need to remove any of the scummy froth off the top or is that good too? Thanks in advance.
