My favourite DAP - HiFi Walker H2!

Sorry for crappy photo, I only have a dumbphone, hence why I bought a DAP!

Like most of you I had an MP3 collection for the longest time before I threw it all away in favour of streaming which was initially excellent but for the last 5 years I completely fell out of love with music. Last year I got into records and CD collecting again which was a blast but despite trying to carry a portable CD player round with me, it wasn't practical so I again ended up not listening to music while out and about.

Picked up the HiFi Walker H2 after much research and it's absolutely incredible. I did initially plan to use it with Bluetooth Earbuds but instead decided on some nice IEMs and I couldn't be happier. It's not night and day audio quality or anything like most people seem to say, but they sound good and not having to charge and pair is actually quite refreshing. I... obtained... all of the FLACs for the CDs/records I own (I could have ripped/recorded but didn't have a spare week to do so) and stored the FLACs on my NAS, before converting to 256kbps MP3 to play on the HiFi Walker.

I love how it has all of my music offline and instantly available. It boots up in about 2 seconds, selecting an album is so easy with the super responsive wheel, and I can use the physical buttons even when it's in my pocket. Battery life is great, easily 15 hours or so. I'm so glad I went with the Rockbox firmware as it's super speedy, capable, and with custom themes looks fantastic. I'm so glad I didn't decide to go with an Android DAP - they're more customisable but there's a lot of bloat, take ages to boot, and always the temptation to install non-essential apps and distract yourself.

The only thing that will take some getting used to is obviously no automatically generated playlists and while I am enjoying more intentional listening album by album, sometimes when I just want some music to do repetitive work to, I miss them. I've got a portable DAB radio which I use for that purpose now.

My FiiO F5 cable broke – need MMCX help + what is 2.5mm balanced even for?

Hey everyone,

my FiiO F5 cable broke a few months ago, so I can’t use them at all and I’m looking for a replacement.

I know they use MMCX, but I’ve read that MMCX isn’t always perfectly standardized and that some cables can fit poorly (too loose or too tight).

So I wanted to ask:

- Are all MMCX cables actually compatible with the FiiO F5?

- Are there specific brands/models that fit especially well?

- Any good cable recommendations that aren’t too expensive?

Also, The Earphones came with an 2.5mm balanced plug and I honestly don’t really understand what that’s for.

Where could I even use a 2.5mm balanced cable, and does it make any sense for a normal phone setup?

Thanks for any help!

Snowsky Echo Mini vs Innioasis Y1 vs AiMoonsa?

I've been doing some research on DAPs and am really just looking for a cheap, Bluetooth device with simple UI. I'm between the Snowsky Echo Mini, the Innioasis Y1, and the AiMoonsa 64GB. Do y'all have any recs between the three?

On pure audio quality, HiBy M300 or Snowsky Disc?

Hey guys,

I’m trying to get HiBy M300 as my first DAP. I’m a newbie, but I’ve seen that the M300 uses a single chip DAC while Snowsky Disc uses a dual chip DAC. Now I’ve heard that dual chip DACs are better than single chip DACs, but I want to know if it’s actually true and if it is, can you hear the difference?

Btw I also don’t care how the Snowsky Disc can power more powerful headphones, I’m using a budget Inawaken Dawn MS IEM, so should be no problem. What I’m looking for is the audio quality not power.

Ditching iPhone for second hand DAP - good idea?

After using an iPhone 13 mini with AirPods Pro 2 / Max for a while, I’m thinking about switching back to a wired setup. I’m stuck in a dilemma: should I pick up a used FiiO M11s for around $250, pay extra for an M21 ($420), or go with the new Onyx XM2? Or should I just scrap all that and just get a dongle? Mostly listening via Apple music.

My last IEMs were the Sennheiser IE80 a long time ago.

As for the new pair, I’m looking at the Xenns Top. Unfortunately, I don’t have any way to audition them, so I’ll have to rely on reviews. Which path would you recommend I take?

Questions for Fiio M21 Cassette Mode Owners

Hi I am looking into buying a Fiio M21 and have some questions regarding the tape mode:

Does the album art display the embedded track art or the album art in the folder? Is this configurable?

I have circular shaped covers like a vinyl record as a lot of my track arts, with normal album art, I use synfonium and like the spinning vinyl as a track art, will the circular art look odd in cassette mode? (This is why I'm hoping I can swap it to album art)

Is the tape mode compatible with synfonium?

Thank you very much

Do I need a dap?

I have a phone (oneplus nord 2t) and a pair of Sennheiser 450bt. I have a collection of flac music. I just want to ear that music. An alternative device could be nice because my phone doesn't support external sd card so I don't have that much space left for flac music. Still, I don't want to spend much: around 40-80€.

Is it better to buy a dap or a good jack - to usb c adapter (and what should I buy in this case) to get the best sound quality my money and headphones can get? Thank you and happy Easter!

HELP: Musicolet Playlists and Duplicates

I feel really dumb, but this is my first DAP switch away from my phone and Spotify for music management

I'm currently running a Hiby M300 with the app Musicolet and running into issues where when I create a playlist within Musicolet, a duplicate file of any song on said playlist appears across search queries.

For example-

I have the Les Chambres Rouges soundtrack by Dominique Plante in my library. I created an instrumental-only playlist that then creates a new path and new audio files with the same conditions as the original album, just a different destination folder. So now if I want to go listen to only the album instead of the playlist, I now have duplicates for the whole album. This is becoming frustrating as now I'm afraid to put anything on a playlist on the off chances of having extensive duplicates by the end of it.

Is this a Musicolet issue? A Hiby issue? Please tell me there's a setting I should be turning off or on to make this not the nightmare it currently feels like lol.

Help

Hey guys! I’ve been looking for a dap and i’m looking for a “budget” mp3 player. My budget is honestly no more than $100. I see the y1 and the r1 and even the echo mini but it all have issues. i know it’s going to have some issues but i just want a dedicated music device with good audio and customizable ui. i don’t really want the android base ones since it seems like so many extra unnecessary features. what do you guys recommend. i’m new to this not true to this😞

Headphones for DX180

Hi there,

I treated myself to my first DAP since I had an iPod many, many, many years ago, it’s an iBasso DX180 and I was just hoping to get some pointers for a set of headphone to go with it?

I’d prefer over ear ones, low profile, comfy enough to wear everyday for extended periods, anything up to around £100ish.

I just don’t know enough about headphones to know what I should be looking for or really understand the technical specs of the ones I see when I look online so any help would be really appreciated.

Even just suggestions for features or specs to look for generally would be really helpful. Cheers.

Best digital audio player under $200?

Hey there, I'm looking to leave behind streaming services and what not, I want to get a digital audio player but theres so many choices that I don't really know where to start.

I dont want any internet connection, just something to play music from. I'm not crazy interested in the best possible audio quality, just something with a good battery that'll last me a long time. Any recommendations are appreciated, thanks.

Forgot to mention this but I prefer buying used.

Help with first setup!!

I listen to a mix of genres but mostly a lot of rock, metal and pop.

I don’t want streaming services, I have a desire to move away from that stuff by having dedicated devices.

I don't need touchscreen.

I mix between playlists and shuffling my library for the ‘right’ feel.

I would prefer this to not be super brick-like, a lot of these devices are super square, heavy looking and lowkey ugly, so I would like it to be ’cute’.

I really like the idea of it being wearable so I wont put it down and forget it in a cafe or something: hanging it to me or my phone if preferable.

I also plan on using iems or just wired headphones, I prefer over ear (had Sony Xm4s but they broke rip) but I’m going to dabble with in ears for better sound quality (I think) and the aesthetic I guess. So please recommend some. Also alright with no Bluetooth.

I like tactile buttons not super necessary.

I would prefer not to spend more this £100 on this first rig out as if it works out I’ll upgrade over time.

Please help!!

Complete rookie to MP3s and DAPs - any recommendations?

Hi! As the title suggest, I have no idea what I'm doing but I'm looking for my first DAP. More specifically, a minimalist one that doesn't have too much ui, nor take up much space.

some tidbits of info about me: I am 17, so my budget isn't that high. I have enough saved from gigs to be able to spend around $~120-150, though I am willing to make some room. Also, my favorite artists' works (ie; my two goats femtanyl and Che) use some very harsh/hardcore beats compared to mainstream, and I want one that can properly capture those tones. No idea how

What I'm looking for/interested in:

Above average sound quality

Storage that can hold up to ~400 songs (not really sure what that is in GBs)

Album-friendly, or at least, ability to make albums with playlists

Non-bulky look, compact enough to fit into pocket with ease. A good guideline I can think of is smaller then an average phone

Shuffle/randomize feature (not required, but definitely would be nice)

Ability to be attached to a lanyard (also not required but would be reallyyy cool and useful to avoid losing it)

What I'm not interested in:

Any form of bluetooth or connection in general, ideally I'm planning on only using AUX with local storage

Any features OTHER then playing music/albums, including things like showing cover art.

Touchscreens

DEALBREAKER : Super bulky players, aka the ones that look way more like a phone then they do a player

One more thing related to players; I'm assuming that you obviously have to buy a cord and earbuds to use with them? Any recommendations for good ones? bonus points if they look cool btw

Thanks for the help and I'll try to answer any questions :D

Searching for a Warm and Musical Tone

<250 USD
