Fun fact: the Bengals gave up more for Dexter Lawrence than we gave up for Khalil Mack
Background: we’re using the Rich Hill model, and discounting future year picks by one round (e.g. a 1st round pick next year is worth a current 2nd round pick).
To get Dexter Lawrence, the Bengals gave up the 10th pick in this year’s draft (for a net cost of 369 points.
To get Khalil Mack, we gave up:
| Pick | Adjusted Value |
|---|---|
| 2019 R1 (No. 24) | 237 (no discount) |
| 2019 R6 (No. 196) | 5 (no discount) |
| 2020 R1 (No. 19) | 112 (discounted R1 > R2) |
| 2020 R3 (No. 81) | 34 (discounted R3 > R4) |
| ---------------------- | --------------- |
| Total sent | 388 |
| ---------------------- | --------------- |
| 2020 R2 (No. 43) | 55 (discounted R2 > R3) |
| 2020 R7 (No. 226) | 2 (can’t discount any further) |
| ---------------------- | --------------- |
| Total received back | 57 |

| Total net cost | 331 points |

I ran a mock draft today, here are the results (explanation in the description)
Round 1 - Keldric Faulk (Auburn EDGE): Not quite sure how he was available at 25, but I would take that 100%. Yes, his last season numbers at Auburn weren't great, but he was coming off a great year, and I think his tape was better than the results. He's got one hell of a motor, great arm length and is a good athlete. He can play inside (think of prime Niners Arik Armstead), but you could also kick him outside, and it would be pretty good, imo. He's at 25, I'd take him without a doubt.
Round 2 - Lee Hunter (Texas Tech IDL): The guy is a straight nose tackle who's amazing against the run. He's got a decent pass rush package, but I wouldn't say it's anything super special. He would be a very helpful part to a Bears' run defense that really struggled last season. Not sure he'd be a great pass rusher, but he would provide a decent push that would help out Montez and Booker/Dayo/Faulk. If you want to really see him, go rewatch the Oregon-TTU CFP game. He played really well, and that's what he could be moving forward.
Round 2 - AJ Haulcy (LSU Safety): I'm definitely higher on Haulcy than some, but I really like his ball skills. He had 5 picks his last year at Houston and 3 this past year at LSU. Bears got a space open next to Coby Bryant, and I think he could fit next to him really nicely. He's not exactly the world's most amazing tackler, but I think it's more angles than his overall effort or commitment, and can definitely be fixed.
Round 3 - Sam Hecht (Kansas State Center): Hecht is a smart center who would be a pretty awesome fit for Ben's offensive style. His measurables are fairly average across the board, but he's got a really solid motor and just plays and plays. One of the pro comps I saw for him was....Garrett Bradbury. So if they grab him, this might fit absolutely perfectly. Hecht sitting behind an established vet and learning the pro game would be perfect, especially for a player who relies on his smarts as much as he does.
Round 4 - Jude Bowry (Boston College Tackle): Bowry's a quick tackle who plays on his toes and is super explosive. He was a leader at BC and is pretty solid in the run game, but a little weaker in the pass game. His footwork is a tad inconsistent, but I think he's got some good potential and could be a decent swing tackle with potential for being a starter. The LT battle would be between Jones and Wills, but he could definitely contend for the job.
Round 7 - Domani Jackson (Alabama Cornerback): Jackson's a former five-star recruit who never really panned out at USC and transferred to Bama to get more playing time. He's an absolute burner at corner and played mostly press coverage outside at Bama, and could definitely use some seasoning and a lot of help. He's raw, but could find a niche on special teams, and honestly, at this point, you're looking for traits as well as upside. He's got both, but needs some work.
Round 7 - Kaden Wetjen (Iowa Receiver/Returner): I think everyone knows the Bears need return help, so why not grab the guy who was the literal best at it in college? He holds the record for kicks/punts returned at Iowa, and even played (albeit sparingly) at WR. I wouldn't count on him developing into a stud wideout, but I think he could be a very good returner, which in this new era of kickoffs, isn't nothing. It would be an excellent value pick at 241.

Just a draft fact I found interesting
The #25 pick has been traded in 8 of the last 9 drafts. Take from that what you will.

Annual r/NFL Mock Draft
The annual r/NFL mock draft took place today and yesterday. I and 2 others acted as the Bears front office during this. Here's a summary of our picks/thought processes throughout the draft. Let us know how we did.
Day 1:
Round 1, Pick 25: Emmanuel McNeil-Warren, S, Toledo
There were a few other guys we liked that got picked before we got to 25, but when we got to this pick we were mostly between Emmanuel McNeil-Warren and Peter Woods. We ended up deciding on McNeil-Warren since we thought the gap between him and other safeties in the draft was quite large and we felt safety was a hole we needed to fill at some point during the draft. We thought we had a better chance at finding decent guys for DL/EDGE later.
Round 2:
Going into the 2nd round we felt like one of the 2 picks we had here needed to be an edge. We threw around the idea of trading up for Akheem Mesidor or Zion Young if either one fell to the mid 40s but they ended up going back to back at 38 and 39. At this point we got a good offer from the Giants and ended up trading back with 2.60. This moved our latter 2nd round pick back to the 4th round and in exchange we gained 2 6th rounders and a 2027 2nd rounder in what we feel is a stronger draft class.
Round 2, Pick 57: Derrick Moore, EDGE, Michigan
There was a run on edges and we felt like Moore was a great EDGE and there weren't many others left so we pulled the trigger there. We also felt he was a great scheme fit for Dennis Allen with his size and length.
Day 2:
Round 3 was the start of Day 2 for our mock draft. Going into the day we were hoping to fill some of our other positions of needs. In particular we had 3 guys at center that we liked and were hoping to see one of them fall to us in the 4th.
Round 3, Pick 89: Sam Hecht, Center, Kansas State
I said we had 3 guys we liked at center and were hoping to get one in the 4th. 2 of those 3 guys went before us in the 3rd. The one guy left was Sam Hecht and we happened to like him the most of the 3 anyway so we decided to take him now knowing that he likely wouldn't be there in the 4th at this point.
Round 4, Pick 105: Austin Barber, OT, Florida
This was the 4th rounder we got from the Giants in the earlier trade. Barber was a player we all liked at a position of need. With Ozzy having the major injury, tackle is a weakness. Barber has experience at both tackle positions so can be a valuable swing tackle going forward and also has the opportunity to learn fast and take over at LT this year and in the future with the Ozzy injury.
Round 4, Pick 129: Deontae Lawson, LB, Alabama
As we approached this pick, we had a lot of different guys we were looking at. When we got to our pick many of those guys were gone but we ended up pretty evenly split between Prysock or Canady at CB and Lawson at LB. We ended up going with Lawson here but it could've been any of those 3 as both LB and CB are defensive needs.
Round 5:
We didn't have any picks here but briefly looked at using one of our acquired 6ths from the Giants trade to move up for Canady when he fell a bit into the 5th but ended up not doing anything there.
Round 6, Pick 192: Domani Jackson, CB, Alabama
Round 6, Pick 193: Malik Benson, WR, Oregon
We had back to back picks here from the Giants trade and as we approached them we had 2 or 3 guys at each of CB, WR, and DL that we were OK with here. We were most aligned on the guys at CB and WR so we took Jackson and Benson here.
Round 7:
Going into Round 7 we had a few guys at DL that we still liked and briefly looked at trading up for one of them (Zxavian Harris/Skyler Gil Howard) but ended up seeing them taken before we could decide on something.
Round 7, Pick 239: Mikail Kamara, Edge, Indiana
Round 7, Pick 241: Lake McRee, TE, USC
As we got to these picks they came at us fast. We ended up liking Kamara and took a shot on him as another potential EDGE and grabbed McRee as a prospective TE3. Ben Johnson loves his 12 and 13 personnel so it could be a fit there.
All in all we felt we came away with a lot of good guys that could hopefully fill some of the bigger roster holes as well as coming out with a 2nd rounder for next year from the Giants. Curious to see what everyone else things and I'm excited for the draft next weekend.
I'll update this with a link to the main post on r/nfl when it goes up so you can see how the whole draft shaped up. This was my first year doing this and it was a lot of fun. Would love to see more people help with the Bears next year.

Packers Safety Evan Williams: "These Bears fans, they have one winning season and try to rage bait us"
Williams said this referring to Bears fans talking during their Tailgate Tour.
He also said: “You gotta give it to that team. They were able to knock us out.. But we’re gonna come out with a certain type of energy when we play those guys in our division. That’s all I can say.”
Is Sanborn starting next year?
Bush and Edward’s have 2 spots locked up, but who is the 3rd?there is a lot of interesting mid round talent in the draft this year, guys like Kyle Louis and Deontae Lawson, would love to increase the athleticism of the group.
Any guesses?
