Scam warning - Anyone considering visiting the Brooklyn Bridge and walking across, avoid the larger food truck [DUMBO] [Brooklyn Bridge]

Bought two larger water bottles for $13 (already a scam in itself), but got an email two days later from my bank asking if i intended to tip 74% ($10 extra). Obviously, I did not and contacted my bank who sorted it out, but just sucks. Wanted to possibly warn anyone who might be looking into the area.

•this was the larger food truck and not the stand that was there. Occurred 5/18.

How has the experience in Manhattan Beach been?

Apologies if this is the wrong place to be asking about the water in the beach because basically what I was looking for was to see if the tides there are calm enough to swim in.

Like what I mean is that there was an incident just recently in Riis Beach where someone drowned in the water as I was looking for a place in Brooklyn for a good swim, but I wanted to know more about Manhattan Beach regarding the water tides.

Are there any private clubs in Brooklyn that have swimming pools?

I'm not sure if this is a stupid question but I have young kids and would love to have access to a club with a pool we could bring them to regularly over the summer. If so, where do you go and what do you pay?

I know there are public options but the lines in my area are long which is hard with young kids. The pools are also freezing.

Has anyone ever seen a concert at Barclays, section 204 behind the stage?

Just wondering how the seat view is. I saw a few pics online but mostly of basketball games. I got cheap tickets for a concert and I’m just happy to be going but also wondering realistically how much I’ll be able to see.

Can anyone recommend a hotel near Xanadu Roller Rink?

Hi there! I’m coming to town to see Mike D at Xanadu Roller Arts on Friday. It’s at 262 Starr Street. I’m having a tough time trying to ascertain what’s around that area. I’m familiar with other parts of Brooklyn but not this area. Any suggestions welcome! We are two ladies driving.

June Hobby Guide: looking to fill some gaps...

I've gotten some great input from Bushwick redditors in the past, so please let me know if you have any hobby happenings (dj classes, mahjong workshops, pickleball clinics etc) coming up that I can include in next month's roundup!

I tend to only include experiences that will really help someone dive into a new hobby and gain enough skill/community to feel equipped to keep going, but you know of shorter experiences (less than 2 hours), I can still include those in the weekly emails.

Thanks in advance 😄

Woman attacking people Hoyt Schermerhorn

My buddy doesn’t have Reddit. Posting since the cops at the station didn’t do anything.

He was waiting for the train yesterday afternoon around 1pm and a Hispanic woman in her late 20s/30s punched him in the back of the head with an object in her hand. When he turned around he pushed her away and she was screaming nonsense in Spanish and scratched his arm up pretty bad with her fingernails. He fled the situation since she was obviously mentally unstable.

He stopped by the police booth and the response was annoyance by their candy crush being interrupted. They ridiculed because he said it was a woman that hit him. “You let a woman hit you?” was the quote.

He’s fine but just wants to put the word out there because whoever she goes after next might just end up on the tracks.

Where to get steel bar cut

Hello! I have a steel mounting bar that needs a straight cut and deburring. It’s cold-rolled steel, 1” wide x 3/8” thick.

Could anyone do this for me or recommend a place? Thanks!

Swapped iPads for scale models at our new community studio in Sunset Park.

Happy Tuesday, everyone,

So like many parents (and let's be honest, adults too), I’ve been actively fighting against relentless screen time. Back in 2020, my son and I swapped the iPads for plastic model kits armed with a manual, precision nippers, and loose parts.

Watching a kid go from initial boredom to 3 hours of uninterrupted, absolute focus was wild. No notifications, no algorithms. Just the satisfaction of building a 3D masterpiece with his own hands (check out the picture of what he finished!).

It completely changed how we connect, and it turned into a massive mission.

Next month, we are moving out of the apartment and officially opening up a boutique, 8-bench scale modeling, and STEAM lab right across from Bush Terminal in Sunset Park. Called Brooklyn Buildz.

I want to make sure we are building exactly what the local community actually wants for after-school, weekend, and summer programs.

I'd love to hear from the community:

  1. If you're a parent, what kind of hands-on, tactile activities have actually successfully pulled your kids away from screens?
  2. If you're a hobbyist/builder, what are the biggest roadblocks you face trying to build in a cramped NYC apartment? (Fumes? Space? Noise?)

Our Grand Opening is locked for June 12th & 13th, and we are running a 30-day Kickstarter starting next week to fund the pro-grade ventilation and workspace tools for the 8 stations.

If you want to see our layout, grab a private pre-launch link, or just talk shop about local summer programs, drop your thoughts below! I'll be hanging out in the comments to answer questions.

My Bushwick landlord held our deposit hostage for 6 weeks, lied about Con Ed, and charged us $300 for a scratch he never mentioned during the walkthrough

Last year me and my roommate rented a 2bed/2bath on the second floor of a walkup near the L. We were both in a master's program in Manhattan and needed something close to the train. The place was newly renovated, central AC, hardwood floors, huge bedroom windows. We loved it.

The landlord seemed chill at first. Then the small stuff started.

He'd installed one of the door knobs upside down. The lock mechanism was so close to the handle that standard locksmith tricks didn't work. One night around 10PM my roommate locked herself out. Landlord called a locksmith, the guy literally had to drill a hole through the door to get in because of how badly the knob was installed. $150. We told the LL it was his fault, he refused to cover it, offered half. We were young, tired, and just wanted in. We paid it.

A kitchen track light went out around the same time. Simple bulb replacement. Took almost a month of last-minute reschedules on his end to actually show up and fix it. We were cooking in the dark.

Fast forward to move-out. We did a full walkthrough together. He said everything looked great. We moved out August 31st.

Then he tells us we'd get our deposit back in October. Not legal, NY law requires it within 14 days. We pushed back. His response: "the money is tied up." This man had a building full of tenants paying him September 1st, the very next day.

October comes. Now suddenly there's a $500 scratch on a vinyl cabinet, something he never mentioned during the walkthrough. We argued. He dropped it to $300. We were exhausted and just said fine.

Then he claims my name is still on the Con Ed account and the new tenants can't register. Except I'd closed the account in early August, before we even moved out. I told him this. He didn't budge. So I called Con Ed directly, they confirmed the account had been closed since August and offered to send a letter proving it. I sent it to him.

Suddenly he could pay. But then he needed to "be at an office to Zelle us." Days pass. Nothing.

We gave him a formal 5-day notice, pay or we're filing small claims. Day four, the money hit.

The whole thing, the bad install, the locksmith, a month without a working kitchen light, the deposit games, the Con Ed lie, could have been avoided if I'd known what I was walking into. Me and my roommate were so broke at the time that fighting for 6 weeks over a deposit was genuinely stressful. And the wildest part is we still kind of liked the apartment itself.

That experience is honestly why I built LandLo.co a free anonymous platform where NYC renters can review their apartment, landlord, and neighborhood so the next person knows what they're signing. A few friends have already left reviews and honestly some of them are hilarious. If you've got a story, drop it there.

Stay safe out there Brooklyn 🫡

I tried to dump clothes in those cubes located in every Food Bazar location but is always overflowing or messy

Missed Connection: A Train Roller Skater with the Gun Show (Bed Stuy/Crown Heights)

This is absolutely a long shot, but it feels worth trying because the vibe was vibing and Reddit has solved stranger mysteries.

To the gorgeous Black man in black roller skates who rode the A from Manhattan to Brooklyn and got off at Nostrand: Earth tones. Maybe army green pants? A sleeveless cut-off and the only kind of gun show I support on the subway. The nose piercing. The whole fit. You had no business looking like that on public transit.

I noticed you as soon as you got on, but I was overheated, not looking or feeling my best, fully in “please do not perceive me” mode, and yet there we were, definitely catching each other looking.

We both got off at Nostrand. I ducked into Wholesome Farms Market. You were somehow gliding out right as I was walking in, and we made eye contact and smiled. Then I immediately tripped on the kicked-up rug, because apparently the universe wanted to humble me. So smooth, I know.

I assumed you’d skated off into the Brooklyn night forever. Then I walked outside and spotted you cruising half a block ahead. I hoped you might turn around, but no dice. You kept rolling, I kept walking, and now here I am, writing a missed connection on a neighborhood subreddit like it’s 2009 Craigslist.

If, on the off chance, you see this, are single, and felt the vibe too, shoot me a message. I’d love a second chance to not trip over a rug and actually say hello lol

Hello Everyone! I am a student from Singapore and I love collecting postcards. I would love to receive postcards from anywhere in Brookyln. Can someone send me one?

Hello Everyone!

I’m a student from Singapore and I enjoy collecting postcards. I would be very grateful to receive postcards from anywhere in Brooklyn . 🙂

If postcards aren’t available, I’d also really appreciate a greeting card, generic card, or a small souvenir.

(like a keychain, rock, local snack, flag, ornament, cap, T-shirt, or handmade craft)

This is for my personal collection, and not for any commercial purpose.

If you’re willing to help, please leave a comment and I’ll share my mailing address with you.

Thank you so much in advice, and warm greetings from Singapore!

🇸🇬🤝🇺🇸

Traveling June 28th

I will be traveling to brooklyn from 7 hours away for a tattoo appointment. it also happens to be pride and my artist informed me there would be lots of parades near and around the shop, which i love but not so much for travel. I’ve been to nyc a few times but with other people driving and making hotel plans, also not on what seems to be such a busy celebratory day. i’m curious if it’s realistic to stay in new jersey and drive into the city without sitting in hours of traffic due to parades and celebrations or if i should bite the bullet and pay for a hotel in the city. i’m so sorry if this seems stupid i’m unfamiliar with public transport and the city. i live in vermont and grew up here so it’s truly a different world. all my love and respect to the city i just need to set some expectation’s for myself :)

Buyout $$ amount??

Re-entering into buyout convo with my building owner. Only rent stabilized unit out of 5 rented apartments

100 year old building but the rest of building outside my unit renovated. Prime Greenpoint / Williamsburg area near Mcgolrick.

What have People recently been asking and getting? Seems we have a lot of leverage and the last time we chatted about it and declined was during Covid so I realize averages $$ may have altered. Also Im mid 30s single no kids

eta Unit is overall stellar condition. We’ve maintained it well and kitchen appliances were all updated in 2008 still amazing/ before that industry went to h3ll.
