Where does everyone buy parts?

I am new to bike wrenching. My wife asked me to upgrade the components on her bike. This is a fantastic community with tons of very helpful advice. Add in YouTube university and I know I’ll be able to successfully wrench on the bike.

My major question is what is the best resource for new components? Where does everyone get parts from? Like is there a bicycle version of Rock Auto?

I’ve found parts on Jenson USA, and on Performance Bike. But I don’t know if I’m overpaying from those outlets.

Is there something better?

I can't get away from my favorite brakes: Shimano 600 Tricolor from the early 1990's. Still work great, look amazing, and are easy to maintain.

Converting vintage bike from friction shifter to indexed thumb shifter

I have this project bike, and the first big thing I want to tackle beyond the obvious is converting these friction shifters to more modern thumb shifters. Anybody have any guidance or can direct me to resources on this?

I’m about to replace the shift cables on my road bike (Trek Edmonda with Ultegra) and the Shimano cables I bought don’t have a barrel adjuster like the current front cable housing does.
I’ve never once used this adjuster so assuming- no, it’s not needed.
Anyone have any insight on this? Thanks in advance!

*Also- should I replace my brake cables and housings at the same time?

Help a newb starting (H2 pick the right geometry parts?)

Hi folks,

I have a frame with which I'd like to build my bike.

Previously I've just built by swapping parts from an existing build but by bit, hence I had a real life experience with the existing geometry and what I might want to change there.

Now without this try and change I'm a bit lost how to pick the geometry relevant parts - especially fork, but also the rest.

I have the frame and another bike I rode and liked and would like to emulate as good as possible geometry wise on the bike stats webpage.

But that's where I'm stuck - what now? How to learn what fork angles etc.?

Could you give me a little spin into the right direction?

That'd be amazing!

Thank you so much!

Picked up this old Cannondale frame and am turning it into a commuter. First time building a bike so learning all of this. What size wheels would these need? bike shop dudes were saying 700C (which is 29.5" right?) but I think thats too big. Am wanting to put some thicker tires on it too. Attached is a pic of the exact frame I found online.

Got this 2016 cube really cheap but with a stick seatpost. It is so stuck the previous owner broke the seatpost by turning it. So either I got parts for a build or a cheap new hardtail if i get it unstuck. Any non destructive ideas? :)

Front axle question

I've removed the axle cap and the pinch bolt. I can not for the life of me get this axle to come out. Does anyone have any tips on getting this front axle out?

u/TanJamMan — 5 days ago

Hey.

my brain is set on building my own bike, be it a proper frankenbike.

What's wrong with the physics of attaching 2 forks to a plate, with a center column in the middle, attached to the handle bars.

Most 2 front wheeled things have some sort of independence or lean ability to the wheels.

Why can't I just keep them separate and turn together?

I can't wrap my head around it. Rather not spend the time if it's just impossible.

REPAIRING A BROKEN HEAD TUBE

A gentleman brought me a bicycle that had a broken head tube right where it meets the top tube. Someone had welded it before but did not brace it in any way so it inevitably broke again.

Welded joints are inherently under constant stress due to what is called the "notch factor". When metal is welded it expands and then shrinks as it cools pulling against the surrounding structure. If the welded part is bearing a static load, this does not pose a problem as there are no additional stresses on the joint. However if the structure is subject to vibration, shock, sudden loads, etc. the metal at the weld will rapidly fatigue and break at or near the weld. This is why any repairs to such a structure MUST be reinforced with additonal bracing (usually a plate). That's why this head tube broke again.

I ground the old weld off, re-welded the break then made saddle to go over the area and added a gusset where the top and head tubes meet. Since its an aluminum frame, I informed the rider that it can no longer be trusted for off road use. It is now a street or mild trail bike only. The repair came out well.

Hi everyone! I was wondering if this the right place to ask for help? I’m a complete newbie when it comes to cycling but I’m training for a marathon and my physio recommended adding cycling into my training.

I found a road bike on market place (https://www.specialized.com/be/fr/mens-tarmac-sport/p/128877?color=239239-128877) for a good price and now I’m trying to figure out if it’d be possible to put gravel tires on the wheels?

Not that I’m necessarily going off road but I think I’d feel more secure with slightly robuster wheels?

Parts I want to bike are next to canals, and though most parts are paved, but some parts are more of these tiny rocks (I think it literally translates to gravel in English?).

Anyway, long story short: can you put gravel tires on a road bike?

Convert my spouses 3x to 1x? Cues? Tips to cranks etc

My spouse has a nice bike that she very rarely use but have seen better days, and I hate working on her 3x setup since .. well.. I am not a fan of them. The kid got a new bike with Cues, and I have to say I liked it. looks great and works great. So I thought, why not make all their bikes cues so if I can buy spares and it'll fit all.

But here is the question. Cues comes with a 170mm crank as minimum. She is 155 or thereabout so for her to have the best enjoyment, I thought why not go for a crank with 160mm crank. I have seen shorter cranks as well, 155mm? 150mm?

I like a crank that has replaceable cogs. I would like it in black matching the cues. Now, any got any suggestions?

Hey all, I am just starting my first build of a bike. I have some maintenance background and am comfortable with auto mechanics so wanted to try my hand at a bike.

I currently have the frame from a early 90's GT Outpost Trail but I want to do a more road style build on it with either Shimano Tiagra or 105 components. + a set of carbon rim brake wheels.
I know I need to get the whole groupset but am a bit perplexed at whether or not i NEED a press fitting if that is already in the bike as it came as well as how to go about making the change to threaded if possible.

I would appreciate any and all help people can offer from reputable sources to tips on my specific issue or even just general advice for making this go well for me!

MTB -> Gravel brake question

So I have an old titanium frame for from my racing days I’m transferring from 26 to 700c. Hopefully.

It has enough clearance and I have put a carbon fork up front with flat mount for disc, the plan is to get some hydraulic/cable callipers and use some 9sp Durace STI.

My question is what to do at the back, do I get a flat mount calliper and try and fit it with an adaptor or go post mount at back and flat mount upfront. The callipers seem to be easier to buy in pairs hence the dilemma.

Phew. Any help appreciated.

Hello. Just bought my first bike and am almost complete, like, I'm 90% done but I'm stuck on getting the brake cable installed. I'm having trouble figuring out how to route the cable into the brake assembly and getting the cable attached to the caliper. Am I supposed to cut something? How do secure the brake cable onto the caliper so that it engages when i pull the brake lever? I have extra cable housing... ARE they extra, or did I forget to put them somewhere?

Let me know what questions you have and maybe we can figure it out together.
