My gf and I are planning on hiking/climbing Mt Katahdin towards the end of July. I’m looking to Reddit for advice and general knowledge from people who have done the climb before.

We’re planning on staying in the park the night before to get an early start. The way we’re going to go is essentially Knife’s Edge first then take Hunt Trail down (we’ve read that’s the better way to do it).

Planning on each having 2L of water then protein bars, quick sugar snacks, gels, etc. Is there anything else we should plan to bring? We don’t want to have heavy packs since it’ll be a long day and don’t want the extra weight. But would you recommend trekking poles or are those not a necessity?

Do you recommend hiking shoes or hiking boots?

Lastly, we’re planning on doing hikes in the ADKs to prepare for the climb of Katahdin. However, is there anything else we should do to prepare? I currently run 60-75mi per week with long runs of 14-16mi (lasting 90mins to 2hrs) so, I’d say I’m in good shape. My gf works out for an hour every day. What have you done to prepare/will we be in enough shape for the climb of Katahdin?

Any and all advice welcomed, thank you!
