Baufeng for NASCAR

Recently attended a NASCAR race. Instead of using the dedicated race radios that are expensive, I used my baufeng to listen in to the race broadcast.

I had my radio tuned to the exact broadcast frequency and was getting a ton of static and the broadcast was not very clear. Even after adjusting the frequency slightly, it was still almost indiscernible from all the static.

Is this an antenna issue or something else entirely?

Can A Baofeng UV-5R Connect To Retevis RT628?

Hey everyone,

I’m pretty new to radios and trying to figure out compatibility between different models. I have a Baofeng UV-5R and was wondering if it can communicate with a Retevis RT628.

From what I understand, the RT628 is more of a license-free walkie-talkie, while the UV-5R is programmable and covers a wider range of frequencies. Is it possible to get them on the same channel/frequency and have them talk to each other? Or are there limitations (like fixed frequencies, privacy codes, etc.) that would prevent that?

If it is possible, could someone explain what settings I’d need to match?

DM32 DMR low transmit volume

Is the DM32 DMR known for having low volume straight out of the box? When i transmit, testing my other handhelds, I can barely hear myself. It only sounds good with one of the cheap stock kenwood earpieces. My analog gain is on 5. And just to refrence im only using analog mode as of the moment.

What is this symbol? Top right

I have this symbol like a square root on my baofeng UV5R Mini and can’t figure out for the life of me what it is. Any ideas?

Help identifying the capabilities of this radio

Hi, I have been given this radio and I can't seem to find any reliable info about its capabilities. It looks like a regular UV20 but the battery is much larger and the Tx power is also much higher (if you trust the info). The model is claimed to be "UV-20 Ultra" that I can't even find.

UV 5g mini no tx to other radios

Just bought a pair of 5g minis to use at work as they use FRS radios to communicate. I can hear the transmission from other radios but when I try to communicate back they cannot hear me. They all use channel 1 and I have made sure I am on the same channel and even reset the radios with no luck. My radios can communicate with each other on that same channel but not with other radios.

I’m fairly new to GMRS so I’m not sure if there’s any programming I need to do. I have ctcss/dcs turned off.

LMR vs FRS/GMRS

I’m one of the countless noobs with a Baofeng who feels they’ve done enough Googling before posting in here.

My job uses dozens of the 16 channel Motorola CP200s. With my new Baofeng I tried finding our frequencies and quickly learned of CTCSS and DCS. Woof.

However, like a blind squirrel, I was able to eventually pick up a channel at 452.3. I also picked up what I believe was a wireless microphone at 433.45.

Here are my questions:

  1. If FRS and GMRS are only between 462-467, this would make our walkies LMR? What are the rules around LMR?

  2. No one I work with has an individual license, and I don’t think our employer does either. We’re just given these walkies by our employer. Are we technically, legally allowed to be using them?

Any insight into how LMR contrasts or overlaps with FRS and GMRS would be helpful. Would also love to know folks experience tackling the mystery of figuring out correct CTCSS/DCS specs would be awesome.

Lastly, would love to know how normal it is for a wireless mic to be transmitting at 433.45 and how all that works

Thanks

DM-32 Auxliary dual PTT mod,

So, I earlier posted this post: https://www.reddit.com/r/tacticalcomms/comments/1silx26/dm32uv_auxliary_dual_ptt_button_soldering_mod/

I managed to mod the DM-32 with my friend.

You need:
some wire
5kOhm resistor

After doing the mod, set the SK1 (sidekey1) on short and long press for sub ptt function.

Note that basicly when you are pushing the sub ptt button on the side of the radio or from the auxliary PTT, you need the push it twice to wake the radio and to transmit. First push wakes the screen and second press activates transmission.

Dunno why it is so, but its almost perfect now. Message me if you have solution for this double press problem.

Walkie Talkie Recommendation

I am looking for a recommendation on a walkie talkie for a security team that will allow dual watch and dual ptt capability. We have security members with walkies and rooms with walkies that we watch and we are trying to achieve the capability of having security members hear calls from the rooms and from each team member without the rooms hearing it. We would also like the ability to easily be able to respond to the rooms and members independently and together without having to switch channels. Ideally we are looking for a walkie that will have 2 ptt buttons (one for security members on one channel and one for rooms on another channel) as well as the dual watch ability to monitor both channels simultaneously. We would also like the ability to talk to both channels together, if possible. Weve looked into the retevis rb45, retevis c2, and baofeng uv-82. We are just trying to make it as easy as possible on all security team members to use the radios where we can explain “you will hear both channels, and press this button to talk to security teams, and this button to the rooms, and this button to both” (again, if possible). Any help is incredibly appreciated!

Need help programming DMR repeater in Baofeng DM32-UV

Hey y'all.

I am having trouble programming a DMR repeater into my DM32-UV. I am using the Baofeng software, CPS version: V1.45.

I can receive some transmissions, but it seems like I'm sometimes only hearing half of the conversation. I have not yet been able to complete a DMR QSO. Yes, I am a licensed amateur operator (General ticket) and Yes, I have my DMR Radio ID registered and plugged into the radio settings.

Thanks again for your help figuring this out.

Repeater Settings per DMRTexas and RadioID.net:

W5EBQ DMR Repeater

  • RX - 440.63750
  • TX - offset +5.000
  • Timeslot 2
  • Talkgroup name: Texas Statewide
  • Talkgroup ID: 3148
  • Colorcode: 1
  • Network: Lonestar

--------

Baofeng CPS settings:

Channel

  • RX: 440.63750

  • TX: 445.63750

  • Channel type: Digital

  • TX Admit: Always

  • APRS Report Mode: Off

  • Forbid TX/Talkaround = unchecked

  • Lone Work = unchecked

  • TX Contact: Texas Statewide

  • RX Group List: None

  • Color code: 1

  • Slot operation: 2

  • Encryption: unchecked

  • DMR ID (registered with RadioID.net)

  • APRS Report Channel 1

Talk Group

  • TG/DMR ID: 3148
  • Name: Texas Statewide
  • Type: Group Call

What am I doing wrong? What do I need to change to be able to connect to this repeater & talkgroup?

Is this normal?

When I place the radio in the charger it's glowing solidly in red for a sec an almost immediately start flashing like in the video. Does not matter if I trying to move the radio in the dock. I tried it with a factory and a 3800mAh battery, same result. Both batteries is around
