The Bhumihar Hindu landlords of the Tamkohi and Salimgarh estates in Rohilkhand compelled the Muslim Gaddis (caretakers/shepherds) to abandon their Islamic faith through extreme force and violence. They forced these Muslims to keep top-knots (Hindu-style hair tufts), shave their beards, and cremate their dead according to Hindu rites instead of burying them as per Islamic tradition. They were also restrained from performing Nikah (the Muslim marriage sacrament) and subjected to other humiliating and oppressive acts. These atrocities, which struck at the very root of the Muslim community’s religious identity and peace, were reported in contemporary newspapers like the Rohilkhand Gazette, which highlighted the pain and suffering inflicted upon the Muslim population by the Bhumihar estate holders. The reports expressed dismay that the government was not taking sufficient action to stop such oppression.
